The confirmed launch lineup, specifications and options are already clearer than the leak: BMW has announced electric i3 50 xDrive and 40 xDrive models globally, while the initial U.S. lineup also includes gasoline-powered 3 Series models.
Is the 2027 BMW iM3 real?
BMW has announced a fully electric 3 Series called the i3, built on its Neue Klasse platform. It has also said an i3 M60 xDrive M Performance variant is planned for launch in 2027. In the official material reviewed, BMW does not call that car an “iM3” or publish its power output. The 700-hp claim circulated in an August 2025 forum post summarizing a CarBuzz headline; it is not a figure BMW has confirmed. BMW’s announcement is the firmer guide to what is known.
That electric performance model should not be confused with the U.S.-announced M350 xDrive. The M350 is a six-cylinder gasoline car with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, not the electric i3 M60. BMW also says a plug-in hybrid will join the broader 3 Series range later; it is not part of the initial launch lineup.
Which BMW i3 models are confirmed?
BMW’s global announcement identifies two electric i3 versions at launch. Both use one motor on each axle, making them all-wheel drive. Their quoted range figures use the WLTP test cycle and should not be compared directly with the preliminary U.S. estimate, which BMW says is based on EPA procedures.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. The 50 xDrive has the larger battery and higher stated output; BMW’s quoted maximum WLTP range is also higher. Range in use will depend on driving conditions, equipment and other factors.
What is announced for the United States?
BMW’s U.S. launch announcement names the i3 50 xDrive, 330, 330 xDrive and M350 xDrive for an expected first-quarter 2027 launch. BMW USA’s model page gives the 2027 i3 50 xDrive Sedan a preliminary estimated range of 446–468 miles. BMW says that estimate is based on preliminary testing using EPA procedures and may not yet be EPA certified; it is not a final EPA range rating. The U.S. page also specifies a NACS charge port. BMW Group’s U.S. announcement and the BMW USA i3 page are the sources for those market-specific details.

How will the i3 charge?
BMW describes the Neue Klasse i3’s electric drive as an 800-volt Gen6 eDrive system with high-voltage cylindrical cells. The launch versions have dual motors, and BMW says DC charging can reach up to 400 kW. The actual charging rate and time depend on the charging station, battery conditions and other factors; a maximum-rate claim is not a promise that every session will sustain that rate. BMW also identifies bidirectional charging capability. For the U.S. i3 50 xDrive, the listed NACS port is relevant when checking charging access and compatible equipment.
What options and equipment has BMW identified?
BMW’s global announcement outlines equipment for the new 3 Series, but availability depends on market and configuration. Check a local BMW configurator or dealer for the final combination offered in your country.

When will the new BMW i3 be available?
BMW says production of the new electric i3 began in Munich in August 2026. Separately, BMW expects the initial U.S. launch in the first quarter of 2027. Production starting in Germany is not the same as vehicles reaching U.S. dealers, and the stated U.S. launch timing is an expectation rather than a confirmed delivery date. BMW’s global announcement places the i3 M60 xDrive M Performance in 2027 as well, without specifying its output in the cited release.

How to choose between an electric i3 and a gasoline 3 Series
The right comparison depends first on powertrain and market timing, not on the “iM3” leak label.
- Choose an electric i3 for: a fully electric powertrain, home or public charging access, and the electric models’ BMW-quoted range and charging specifications. For U.S. buyers, use BMW’s preliminary 446–468-mile estimate as provisional until final EPA certification.
- Consider a 330 or M350 if: you want one of the announced gasoline models. The M350 xDrive is the six-cylinder 48V mild-hybrid performance model in BMW’s U.S. announcement; its powertrain is distinct from the future electric M60.
- Wait for more detail if: your decision depends on the i3 M60’s horsepower, final U.S. range certification, exact option availability, or plug-in-hybrid specifications. BMW’s reviewed announcements do not settle those details.
For a meaningful comparison, keep the market and test cycle attached to every range figure, distinguish standard equipment from options, and check the final local configuration and charging compatibility before placing an order.
