BMW unveiled it on March 18, 2026, with 463 hp and a preliminary U.S. range estimate of up to 440 miles; its later global and UK figures use WLTP testing and list up to 912 km (567 miles). Those numbers describe different markets and test bases, not one universal range rating.
What BMW revealed
BMW introduced the new i3 on March 18, 2026, describing it as the second Neue Klasse model and the first all-electric BMW 3 Series. The launch model, the i3 50 xDrive, has one electric motor on each axle and all-wheel drive. It is an electric interpretation of the 3 Series, distinct from the earlier compact i3 hatchback. BMW’s March announcement presents the launch car and its technology.
The i3 name is now being used within BMW’s electric 3 Series range. In its October 1, 2026 global overview, BMW lists both the i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive. BMW’s UK announcement separately says an i3 M60 xDrive M Performance model is planned for 2027. These are later lineup updates, not part of the original March launch announcement.
What are the i3 50 xDrive’s range and performance figures?
There is no single range number that applies across markets. BMW’s U.S. materials quote a preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedure standards; the global and UK figures are WLTP values. They should be read as market-specific estimates, not treated as interchangeable certified results.

The one-mile difference between BMW Group’s 567-mile presentation and BMW UK’s 566-mile figure is consistent with rounding or publication conventions; the sources do not identify it as a specification change. BMW says U.S. range varies with equipment and conditions, including wheel and tire choice, driving style, accessories, traffic, temperature, and charging behavior.
How quickly can the i3 charge?
BMW says the i3 uses sixth-generation eDrive and an 800-volt electrical architecture. For the 50 xDrive, BMW lists peak DC charging power of up to 400 kW. BMW USA estimates a 10–80% charge in 21 minutes and 191–208 miles of added range in 10 minutes, assuming the car can charge at its maximum rate. These manufacturer estimates are not a promise for every charging station or session: available power and actual time depend on the charger and conditions.

The U.S. version has a NACS charge port, according to BMW USA. The global overview lists the i3 40 xDrive at up to 300 kW DC, compared with 400 kW for the 50 xDrive. A peak-power rating describes capability, not a constant charging rate throughout a session.
Battery and onboard technology
BMW says the Gen6 high-voltage batteries use cylindrical cells and cell-to-pack construction, which it says supports high pack-level energy density and a flatter battery. The company also lists Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid functions. Availability and operating details can depend on market and configuration; BMW’s cited material does not establish that every function is available in every region.

The launch also features BMW Panoramic iDrive, BMW Symbiotic Drive, and the Heart of Joy high-performance computer. BMW claims Heart of Joy responds ten times faster than previous systems; that is BMW’s comparison, not an independently measured result.
How does the 50 xDrive compare with the 40 xDrive?
BMW’s October 2026 global overview positions the 50 xDrive as the higher-output version, with more peak charging power. The table combines global overview figures with UK-market acceleration figures where identified; range figures are WLTP and should not be compared directly with the preliminary U.S. estimate.

Figures are BMW-published; the UK release marks its table’s output, charging, performance, consumption, and range values provisional. Standard equipment and options also vary by market; BMW USA lists adaptive assistance features and Digital Key Plus for its U.S. model.

BMW says series production at Plant Munich began in August 2026, and order books opened ahead of schedule in mid-June. For the UK, BMW announced first customer deliveries in autumn 2026. Those timing statements are market-specific; they do not establish a U.S. delivery date.

BMW says the high-voltage batteries are produced at its Irlbach-Strasskirchen plant in Lower Bavaria, while the Gen6 motor is manufactured at Plant Steyr in Austria; the motor housing comes from the Landshut foundry. BMW also says the Munich plant will produce only fully electric vehicles from 2027. Its stated 10% further reduction in manufacturing costs at Munich refers to production costs, not a reduction in the car’s retail price.
How much does the BMW i3 50 xDrive cost?
BMW UK lists the i3 50 xDrive from £53,425 on the road (OTR). That is a UK price published in September 2026, not a U.S. or global price. The cited BMW material does not establish a U.S. price.
BMW’s UK lineup update also says petrol-powered 320 and M350 xDrive models are slated for January 2027, while the electric i3 M60 xDrive is due to join the i3 range during 2027. These are UK announcements and should not be read as universal launch dates.

What to check when comparing i3 figures
- Range basis: Compare WLTP with WLTP and U.S. EPA-certified ratings with EPA-certified ratings. BMW’s 440-mile U.S. figure is preliminary and based on EPA procedure standards, while its 566- and 567-mile figures are WLTP.
- Market and specification: Confirm the country, equipment, wheels, and tires attached to the figure. BMW notes that configuration and real-world conditions affect U.S. range.
- Charging conditions: Treat 400 kW as a maximum capability, not a guaranteed session average. BMW’s 10-minute and 10–80% estimates assume a suitable session at the car’s maximum rate.
- Price and delivery: Compare figures from the same country and date. The UK price and delivery window do not establish U.S. pricing or timing.
- Manufacturer claims: The published specifications and technology descriptions are BMW-reported. They do not, by themselves, establish independent road-test performance.
