They look striking, but the car is a camouflaged test prototype: Audi has not published final exhaust dimensions or confirmed the design’s purpose, and the production car could change.
What the spy photos show
The feature drawing attention is a pair of oval outlets that appear larger than the current car’s and sit closer together. Auto Express also reported that a similar rear design appeared in a tailgate-use diagram on the RS 5. Its spy-photo coverage shows camouflaged RS 6 Avant and saloon test vehicles, rather than finished production cars.
The available reports call the outlets large or huge, but give no measurements. Their appearance in prototype images supports a styling observation, not a precise size comparison or a guarantee that the production exhaust will look identical.
Why are the new RS 6’s exhaust tips so big?
There is no confirmed explanation. The reporting describes what is visible, but Audi has not stated why the outlets are so large or why they are positioned close together. Any claim that the layout serves a particular engineering, cooling, acoustic, or packaging purpose would go beyond the evidence.

Motor1 noted a visible fuel filler and a high-voltage warning marking on the prototype, clues it interpreted as indicating a plug-in hybrid. That is a reporter’s inference from the test car, not an Audi specification announcement. The warning marking and exhaust styling do not, by themselves, establish the final powertrain or explain the outlet design. (Motor1, February 25, 2026.)
What is confirmed about the next RS 6?
As of Auto Express’s August 17, 2026 report, the reveal timing and exact powertrain details remained uncertain. The sources available here do not establish the 2027 car’s engine, output, battery capacity, electric range, price, or launch date. How the prototype compares with the current RS 6
Audi’s official 2026 US-market RS 6 Avant performance page is a useful predecessor reference, not a specification sheet for the next generation. It lists a twin-turbo V8, 621 hp, 627 lb-ft of torque, and a 0–60 mph time of 3.3 seconds. Audi describes that model’s RS-specific exhaust as having “twin oval tailpipes.” (Audi USA, 2026 RS 6 Avant performance.)
A separate Audi MediaCenter technical sheet gives Germany-program figures for the RS 6 Avant performance as of June 13, 2024: a 3,996 cc V8 producing 463 kW (630 PS) and 850 Nm. - The prototype shows two large oval outlets mounted close together.
- Their exact dimensions and final production appearance have not been established.
