The 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300 is Yamaha’s first production model equipped with an airbag. The distinction matters: Yamaha tested airbag-equipped scooter-based research vehicles years earlier, but the Tricity brings the system to a production commuter scooter. Its cockpit-mounted airbag is designed for a hard frontal collision that throws the rider forward; it is not a guarantee against injury.
Which Yamaha scooter has an airbag?
It is the 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300, a three-wheel commuter scooter. Yamaha describes it as the first Yamaha model equipped with an airbag. Calling it Yamaha’s first production scooter with one makes the claim more precise, because earlier Yamaha airbag systems appeared on research vehicles, not production models. Yamaha’s Tricity 300 product page gives the model and its intended airbag scenario.
How does the Tricity 300 airbag work?
The airbag is integrated into the scooter’s cockpit or panel. It is designed to deploy in a hard frontal collision when the rider is ejected forward, absorbing some kinetic energy and helping reduce injury. That describes the system’s intended function, not a promise that it will prevent injury or work in every crash.
Supplier Autoliv says the module was co-developed with Yamaha and designed for a frontal collision while maintaining vehicle balance and storage space. Autoliv also reports that development validation included advanced simulations and full-scale crash testing. Its announcement does not provide a model-specific injury-reduction figure, detailed test protocol, or independent test results, so the available claims do not establish how much safer the Tricity is than another scooter.

Why this is Yamaha’s first production airbag scooter
Yamaha’s airbag work predates the Tricity. In a November 15, 2000 release, Yamaha described the ASV-2 as a research-use vehicle based on the 250cc Majesty scooter, with an airbag system intended to mitigate rider injury in frontal collisions.
In 2006, Yamaha introduced the ASV-3 research vehicle, based on the 250cc MAXAM scooter. Its development airbag used a backplate and multiple chambers intended to support the rider’s lumbar area and mitigate collision impact. These prototypes explain why “first Yamaha scooter airbag” without the production qualifier would be misleading.

When and where is the Tricity 300 airbag model available?
Autoliv’s March 12, 2026 announcement said the updated Tricity 300 was expected to be available during the first half of 2026. That is a launch expectation, not confirmation that the model is currently in stock in every country. For local price, availability, specifications, licensing requirements, and confirmation that the airbag-equipped version is offered in your market, check with Yamaha’s local importer or a dealer. The available announcements do not establish those details globally.
