What is the Yamaha R9?
Yamaha introduced the YZF-R9 as a 2025 model, positioning it as a road-and-track supersport rather than a standard naked bike. Its defining combination is the CP3 triple used in Yamaha’s broader lineup and a purpose-built aluminum Deltabox frame, with sport-oriented suspension, brakes, aerodynamics and electronics. Yamaha’s U.S. introduction describes the R9’s 890cc liquid-cooled engine; Yamaha’s Japan announcement and racing material state 888cc. Those figures reflect the wording of different regional manufacturer sources and should not be silently treated as identical homologated specifications. How much does the Yamaha R9 cost?
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA lists the 2026 standard R9 at $12,499 U.S. MSRP and the 2026 R9 70th Anniversary Edition at $12,899 U.S. MSRP. The standard model is listed in Team Yamaha Blue, with dealer arrivals beginning January 2026; the Anniversary Edition is listed with arrivals beginning December 2025. MSRP excludes any applicable taxes, registration, dealer charges or other costs, so it is not an out-the-door quote. These are U.S. prices, not global pricing. Yamaha’s 2026 U.S. lineup announcement.
For context, Yamaha’s October 2024 U.S. announcement listed the 2025 R9 at $12,499 MSRP, in Team Yamaha Blue, Matte Raven Black or Intensity White/Redline, with dealer arrival beginning March 2025. Japan has separate launch and sales details. Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announced a blue 2026 YZF-R9 ABS for release there on May 15, 2026, and a 70th Anniversary Edition limited to 200 units for release January 30, 2026. The announcement identifies it as a Yamaha Motorcycle Exclusive Model sold through YSP outlets. The 200-unit limit applies to the Japan-market Anniversary Edition; it is not evidence of a global production cap or U.S. availability. Yamaha Japan’s January 15, 2026 announcement.
What are the Yamaha R9 specs and hardware?
Engine and chassis
The U.S. manufacturer announcement describes a liquid-cooled 890cc CP3 three-cylinder engine with a distinct ECU tune and optimized gearing. Yamaha’s Japanese 2026 announcement states 888 cm³, while Yamaha’s racing report also uses 888cc. Consult the specification sheet for the exact market and model year you are considering rather than assuming one figure applies everywhere. Yamaha’s Japanese explanation of the Crossplane Concept says it is a design philosophy intended to efficiently draw out combustion torque generated in the combustion chamber, with little inertial torque; that is the manufacturer’s technical explanation, not an independent engine assessment.

The frame is a gravity-cast aluminum Deltabox design. Yamaha says it is tuned to offer predictable feel at low speeds and rigidity at track speeds, and describes the R9 as having near 50/50 weight distribution. Yamaha also calls it the lightest aluminum frame used on one of its Supersport models; this is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified comparative measurement. Suspension and brakes
The R9 uses a fully adjustable KYB fork and rear shock. Up front, Yamaha lists Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers, a Brembo radial master cylinder and twin 320 mm discs. Yamaha also says the rear ABS can be switched off for track riding. That feature is intended for track use; it is not a recommendation to disable road safety systems. Aerodynamics
Functional front winglets are part of the R9’s bodywork. Yamaha says they add downforce and calls the bike its most aerodynamic model. Those are manufacturer descriptions; the available specifications do not establish independently measured aerodynamic performance. Yamaha’s U.S. announcement.

The available U.S. announcements establish the model-year pricing and announced colors: the 2025 model was listed at $12,499 MSRP in three colors, while the 2026 standard model is listed at the same U.S. MSRP in Team Yamaha Blue, alongside a separately priced Anniversary Edition. They do not establish a comprehensive technical change list that would support saying the 2026 bike has a new engine, chassis or rider-aid package. For an actual purchase, compare the full local specification sheets and confirm the model year and installed equipment with a dealer.

When is the Yamaha R9 available?
Yamaha’s U.S. announcement said 2026 standard R9 dealer arrivals would begin in January 2026 and the Anniversary Edition’s in December 2025. Yamaha Japan separately announced a May 15, 2026 release for its blue 2026 YZF-R9 ABS and January 30, 2026 for the Japan-limited Anniversary Edition. Announced arrival or release dates are not confirmation of current inventory; stock depends on market and dealer. The 2025 U.S. model’s initial dealer arrival was announced for March 2025. What does the R9’s racing record tell buyers?
Yamaha reports that Stefano Manzi won the 2025 WorldSSP championship aboard the R9 and that R9 riders won 17 of 24 races that season. That is relevant competition context for the model’s debut season, but race results do not establish consumer-road performance, comfort, reliability or superiority over another motorcycle. How to compare the R9 with other middleweight sport bikes
The manufacturer specifications available here do not provide like-for-like competitor measurements or independent road-test results. A meaningful comparison should use the same market and model year for each bike and check:
- Local out-the-door price, not just MSRP.
- Engine layout and displacement as specified for that market.
- Suspension and braking components.
- Rider aids, display and connectivity features.
- Riding position and seat reach, ideally by sitting on the motorcycle.
- Dealer availability and whether your intended use is mainly road, track or a mix.
Do not infer which motorcycle is faster, more comfortable, cheaper to own or better overall from the R9’s manufacturer feature list alone.
