The price difference between the listed entry trims is $6,720, but that compares starting trims, not equivalent equipment or final transaction prices. The cargo figures also use different descriptions; they are not a like-for-like measure and do not show how much luggage fits with all three rows occupied.

Choose the Grand Highlander Hybrid if eight seats may matter

Test the actual child-seat and passenger arrangement
Published seating capacity does not establish whether your child restraints will fit together or whether your passengers will find the third row comfortable. Bring the child seats you use, install them in the intended positions, and have the people who will ride in the third row try the vehicle. Check access with the seats and restraints installed, not just with an empty cabin.
How do their fuel economy and hybrid powertrains compare?
On the published figures, the Sorento Hybrid EX FWD is rated at 37 mpg combined, while Kia lists AWD versions at 34 mpg combined. Toyota’s ratings vary by trim and drivetrain: its 2026 page lists the Hybrid LE at 36 mpg city and 32 highway, and the Hybrid XLE FWD at 37 city and 34 highway. Toyota lists up to 36 mpg combined for the standard-hybrid range. Actual mileage varies with configuration and driving conditions, as manufacturer estimates caution.

For a useful comparison, match front-wheel drive to front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, then check the rating for the exact trim. Do not treat one brand’s best figure as the rating for every version.
The standard Grand Highlander Hybrid is rated at 245 net combined horsepower. Toyota’s Hybrid MAX is a distinct turbocharged hybrid, not another name for the standard hybrid; Toyota lists 26/27 mpg city/highway for its 2026 Hybrid MAX Limited and Platinum grades. Kia lists 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of combined output for Sorento HEV trims. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent acceleration tests.

Which has more usable room for people and luggage?
Toyota advertises up to 97.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity with rear seats folded. Kia lists up to 75.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded flat. Because the manufacturers describe these maximums differently, the figures do not settle which vehicle carries more of your family’s luggage in a normal three-row setup.
If you regularly travel with all three rows in use, measure the space behind the third row in each exact vehicle. Bring the stroller, sports bags or suitcases you need to carry, and try loading them with the passengers aboard. Also check whether the third row can be accessed and folded in the way your household will actually use it.

Compare the particular features and drivetrain your family wants rather than relying on the base-price gap. Request written, itemized local quotes for those configurations and compare the same categories of charges. Availability, options and dealer pricing can vary by location and over time.

What do the published safety claims establish?
Kia says the Sorento Hybrid was named a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, applicable only to vehicles built after September 2025, and reports an NHTSA five-star overall score. Check the testing organizations’ current records for the specific vehicle and build date before relying on those claims.
Toyota’s 2026 Grand Highlander page lists Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features, but the manufacturer information cited here does not provide a matching crash-test comparison. Driver-assistance equipment and crashworthiness results are different kinds of evidence, so the available claims do not establish a like-for-like safety winner.
Which three-row hybrid SUV should you choose?
- Start with the Kia Sorento Hybrid EX FWD if the lower listed starting MSRP and its 37-mpg combined EPA estimate are attractive, and seven seats meet your needs.
- Start with the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid if you may need seating for up to eight or want to investigate Toyota’s larger advertised maximum cargo capacity; confirm the exact seat layout and test luggage space with the rows you will use.
- Compare AWD with AWD, FWD with FWD, and equivalent equipment if you are deciding between specific trims. Keep Toyota’s standard hybrid separate from Hybrid MAX.
Before choosing, install your child seats, try the third row with your passengers, load your everyday luggage and obtain written local quotes for the exact vehicles. Those checks answer the fit and cost questions the published specifications cannot.
