Their published overall lengths range from 176.4 inches for the Crosstrek to 196.8 inches for the Ascent. These are Subaru specifications, not independent measurements or parking tests.

The standard lengths below are Subaru’s published figures. Forester Wilderness is the exception to its model’s standard length: it is listed at 182.9 inches.

What the length ranking tells you—and what it doesn’t
Parking footprint
Length is useful for comparing front-to-back footprint, but it is not a complete parking-fit measurement. Subaru says the shorter Crosstrek has an edge over the Forester in very tight parking situations, and describes the Ascent as larger than the Outback, which is easier to fit in tight city parking. Those are Subaru’s comparisons, not independent parking-test results. For a narrow garage or tight space, width and height matter too.

Width and height
For a narrow garage, compare the vehicle’s trim-specific width with the available space. For overhead clearance, check the height and the roof-rail configuration; Subaru explicitly gives the Ascent’s 71.6-inch height with standard roof rails. A model’s position in the length ranking does not tell you whether it will clear your garage or fit between its side walls.
Passenger seating and cargo capacity are separate measures
Seating
Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback are listed for up to five passengers. The three-row Ascent seats up to eight with a second-row bench or up to seven with second-row captain’s chairs. If passenger capacity or a third row is the deciding factor, the length ranking alone will not answer the question.

Maximum cargo volume
Subaru’s published maximum cargo volumes show a different order from exterior length: the Outback’s stated maximum is higher than the Ascent’s.

How to use the ranking when choosing a Subaru
- For the shortest overall length: Start with the Crosstrek at 176.4 inches.
- For a three-row layout: The Ascent is the only three-row model in this comparison; its passenger capacity depends on second-row configuration.
- For maximum listed cargo volume: The Outback has the highest published maximum among these four, at up to 80.5 cubic feet.
- For a garage-fit decision: Check the exact trim’s width and height, and account for roof rails as applicable; length alone is not enough.
Subaru’s Ascent-versus-Outback comparison says the Ascent is “Bigger in every dimension than the Outback” and gives its length, width, and height with roof rails. The dimensions in this article remain manufacturer-published specifications rather than independent measurements.
