The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the lower-priced hybrid choice and has the stronger published fuel-economy rating; the Subaru Forester offers standard AWD across its lineup, greater stated ground clearance, and published cargo figures that vary by trim. Both named hybrid candidates have AWD. The right pick depends on which exact trims you compare and whether efficiency or utility matters more.
What you’re comparing
This is not a hybrid-versus-hybrid comparison by default: Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross choice here is hybrid-only, while Subaru sells the 2026 Forester with gasoline and hybrid powertrains. Subaru lists six gasoline trims and four hybrid trims; Toyota lists Corolla Cross Hybrid S, SE, and XSE. The prices and specifications below are manufacturer-published US figures, accessed October 8, 2026, and can change.
Price and trim options
Toyota’s hybrid trims start below Subaru’s hybrid Forester trims. Subaru’s gasoline Forester has a lower starting price than its hybrid, but comparing that price directly with a Corolla Cross Hybrid means comparing different powertrains.
| 2026 model and trim | Manufacturer-published US base price |
|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid S | $29,795 |
| Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SE | $31,115 |
| Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE | $33,830 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Base | $29,995 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Premium | $31,995 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Sport | $34,795 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Limited | $35,995 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Wilderness | $36,995 |
| Subaru Forester gasoline Touring | $39,995 |
| Subaru Forester Hybrid Premium | $34,730 |
| Subaru Forester Hybrid Sport | $37,930 |
| Subaru Forester Hybrid Limited | $38,995 |
| Subaru Forester Hybrid Touring | $41,545 |
These are base prices from the manufacturers’ current 2026 US pages, not out-the-door totals; destination charges, taxes, dealer-installed options, and local incentives can change what you pay. Subaru announced updated Forester pricing on February 10, 2026, so older launch-price references may not match the current trim table. Compare the specific equipment you want and request local quotes rather than treating the lowest trim’s MSRP as a like-for-like deal. Fuel economy and powertrains
Corolla Cross Hybrid
Toyota lists 46 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 42 mpg combined for the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid S, SE, and XSE with AWD. Toyota’s September 24, 2025 announcement gives the hybrid system’s net combined output as 196 horsepower. These are manufacturer-published figures, not guaranteed real-world results. Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross announcement.
Forester Hybrid
Subaru lists 35 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for 2026 Forester Hybrid trims, using a page display labeled “Up to MPG (hwy/city).” Subaru also estimates up to 581 miles of range. The company describes the powertrain as a 2.5-liter Boxer-based hybrid system and says it can deliver up to 40% better city fuel economy than its non-hybrid counterpart. That percentage is Subaru’s comparison claim, not a guarantee for every driver or trip. Subaru Forester Hybrid features; Subaru Forester specs and trims.

Gasoline Forester
Subaru lists up to 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the Forester Base, Premium, and Limited; Sport and Wilderness have lower figures. The trim and powertrain matter, so a gasoline Forester’s economy should not be confused with the hybrid figures above. Subaru Forester specs and trims.
The Toyota has the higher published combined rating of the hybrid candidates. That alone does not establish which costs less to fuel over a year: the answer depends on annual mileage, driving mix, local fuel prices, and actual consumption.

AWD, ground clearance, and rough-road use
Both hybrid candidates have standard all-wheel drive, but the manufacturers describe different systems. Subaru lists Symmetrical AWD as standard on every 2026 Forester trim. Toyota says all Corolla Cross Hybrid grades have standard AWD and identifies the system as Electronic On-Demand AWD. The available specifications do not establish that one system is superior in snow, mud, or handling. Tires, road conditions, clearance, and driver behavior also affect capability. Subaru Forester specs and trims; Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross announcement.
Subaru lists 8.7 inches of ground clearance for most Forester trims and 9.3 inches for Wilderness. Its feature page describes X-MODE availability by trim. The Toyota material cited here does not establish a comparable Corolla Cross Hybrid clearance figure, so this comparison cannot quantify a clearance gap. If your route includes rutted tracks, deep snow, or steep entrances, compare exact trim specifications and consider the tires fitted to the vehicle. Subaru Forester features and technology.

Cargo and towing
Subaru’s 2026 brochure lists these Forester cargo and towing specifications by trim:
| Forester version | Cargo behind rear seats | Maximum cargo with rear seats folded | Manufacturer-listed towing capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most trims | 27.5 cu. ft. | 69.1 cu. ft. | 1,500 lb |
| Base | 29.6 cu. ft. | 74.4 cu. ft. | 1,500 lb |
| Wilderness | Not stated in the cited brochure figures | Not stated in the cited brochure figures | 3,500 lb |
The cited Toyota material confirms 60/40-folding rear seats and lists a tow-hitch accessory rated up to 1,500 lb, but it does not provide a comparable official Corolla Cross Hybrid cargo-volume figure. The available figures therefore do not support a measured cargo-volume ranking between the two vehicles. Toyota accessory fit and towing details should be verified for the specific model year and trim. Subaru 2026 Forester brochure; Toyota Corolla Cross accessories.

Safety features and coverage
Toyota lists Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on the Corolla Cross Hybrid, including pre-collision with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and lane tracing assist. Subaru lists EyeSight Driver Assist Technology for Forester trims. Equipment availability can vary by vehicle or trim, and feature lists do not by themselves establish crashworthiness or how well driver-assistance systems perform. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative independent crash-test verdict for both exact 2026 models; check current IIHS and NHTSA results before using crash ratings to decide. Toyota’s September 24, 2025 announcement says ToyotaCare includes scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus two years of roadside assistance regardless of mileage. It also states a 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty. Confirm the current warranty booklet and terms for your market and vehicle. The cited Subaru materials do not establish comparable warranty terms, so they do not support a warranty winner. Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross announcement.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Corolla Cross Hybrid if
- You prioritize the higher published fuel-economy rating among these hybrid choices.
- You want a lower starting price than the listed Forester Hybrid trims.
- Its seating and cargo space work for your household, and you want standard AWD.
Choose the Forester if
- You want standard Symmetrical AWD across the entire Forester lineup, including gasoline trims.
- You value its published ground clearance, especially the Wilderness specification.
- You want published cargo-volume figures and a trim-specific towing capacity to assess your needs.
For either vehicle, compare exact trims and local out-the-door quotes, then check cargo fit with the rear seat up and folded. If winter or rough-road use is important, evaluate the tires and clearance on the vehicle you would actually buy. A test drive can resolve fit, visibility, and comfort questions that manufacturer specifications cannot.
