The 2026 Subaru Ascent is worth the extra size and starting price if you regularly need a third row or tow more than a typical Forester can handle. The Forester is the better fit for households of five or fewer that want a smaller vehicle, lower starting MSRP and Subaru’s higher published maximum fuel-economy ratings. For occasional bulky cargo alone, the Ascent’s larger passenger capacity matters more than the similar maximum cargo figures.
What you gain—and give up—with the Ascent
The Ascent seats up to eight with a second-row bench or seven with captain’s chairs. The Forester seats up to five. That is the most important difference: folded-seat cargo capacity does not tell you how much luggage either vehicle can carry while its passengers are seated.
The Ascent is 196.8 inches long, compared with 183.3 inches for most Forester trims; the Forester Wilderness is 182.9 inches long. The Ascent is also wider and has a longer wheelbase, so account for parking and garage fit as well as passenger space. Subaru’s [2026 comparison](https://www.subaru.com/vehicles/compare.html) lists these dimensions; confirm measurements for the exact trim and equipment you are considering.

These are Subaru-published specifications and listed prices, not independent road-test or real-world fuel-economy results. Trim and equipment affect some figures.

Does the Ascent’s extra room justify its price?
Choose the Ascent if you regularly need the third row
If your usual trips involve six or more people, the Forester’s five-seat limit settles the question. The Ascent gives you a third row and a choice between a second-row bench for up to eight occupants or captain’s chairs for up to seven. The available source figures do not establish how comfortable the third row is for particular passengers, so bring the people who will use it on a test drive.

Choose the Forester if five seats are enough
The Forester starts at a Subaru-listed $29,995, versus $40,795 for the Ascent. Its smaller footprint may be easier to accommodate in a tight garage or parking space, and Subaru’s comparison shows higher maximum city and highway MPG figures. Those are manufacturer-published ratings; actual fuel economy and the cost difference over time are not established by these specifications.
Do not choose by maximum cargo volume alone
The listed maximums—up to 75.6 cubic feet for the Ascent and up to 74.4 cubic feet for a Forester Base—are close. But they describe cargo capacity with rear seatbacks folded, not what fits behind occupied seats. If your main need is transporting people and luggage at the same time, test the exact seating layout and load representative bags or equipment. Subaru’s comparison does not provide independent measurements of cargo space with every seat in use.

Which one makes sense for towing?
Subaru lists maximum towing at 5,000 pounds for the Ascent. Most Forester trims are listed at 1,500 pounds, while the Forester Wilderness is listed at 3,500 pounds. The Ascent has the higher published limit, but Wilderness changes the comparison substantially if that is the Forester trim you are considering.
Before towing, check the owner’s manual and the vehicle’s label for the exact vehicle’s limits and requirements; do not assume a model-wide maximum applies to every trim or setup. Subaru describes an available Class III hitch accessory on the [Ascent feature page](https://www.subaru.com/vehicles/ascent.html). Confirm hitch compatibility and required equipment for the particular vehicle.

How safety, clearance and warranties compare
Subaru says both 2026 models include standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and lists DriverFocus as available on both. Subaru also announced that the 2026 Ascent and Forester earned IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards. These manufacturer statements do not establish identical performance in every test or configuration; consult the [IIHS vehicle records](https://www.iihs.org/ratings) for test details and applicable vehicles.
Subaru lists 8.7 inches of ground clearance for most trims of both models; the Forester Wilderness is listed at 9.3 inches. The Forester Wilderness therefore has more listed clearance than the Ascent, despite the Ascent’s larger body and higher towing rating.

Subaru’s comparison lists a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Verify the terms that apply to your purchase market and contract.

A practical way to decide
- Count the people on an ordinary trip. If more than five routinely travel together, focus on the Ascent and test the bench or captain’s-chair configuration you would buy.
- Check cargo behind the seats you will actually use. Bring typical bags, strollers or equipment; maximum folded-seat capacity is not the same as usable space with passengers aboard.
- Measure the parking space. Compare your garage and regular parking constraints with the exact trim’s dimensions.
- Match the trailer to the trim. Compare the trailer’s loaded weight with the exact vehicle’s permitted limits, especially if considering Forester Wilderness.
- Compare the specific prices and equipment. Subaru’s published MSRP ranges are not a quote for a particular vehicle; configure the trims you would actually purchase.
- Test-drive both with your usual seating arrangement. Sit in every row you expect to use and check access, visibility and the space remaining for your gear.
