Its compact size, responsive chassis and available six-speed manual suit drivers who value the experience on an ordinary scenic road. The trade-off is real: two-seat space, modest cargo capacity and, as reviewer Robin Warner describes it, a firm ride and noticeable highway noise.
What is the point of the MX-5 Miata?
“What’s the point?” is the question at the heart of Robin Warner’s review for The Truth About Cars, syndicated by Yahoo Autos on October 1, 2026. His answer is driving enjoyment: the interaction among the engine, gearbox and chassis, made more vivid with the roof down. That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a promise that every driver will feel the same way.
The 2026 U.S. Miata is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500-rpm redline. Warner’s review argues that the car’s appeal is less about headline acceleration than about how its powertrain and chassis come together. The review’s informal sub-six-second 0–60 mph estimate is not an official or independently verified test result.
How do the soft top and RF differ?
Mazda offers the Miata as a cloth soft top or an RF retractable fastback. The RF is a body-style and roof alternative, not a separate performance model. Mazda’s 2026 U.S. lineup does not list an RF version of the Sport trim.

Choose between them based on the roof experience and the trim and transmission combinations you want. The soft top is available across Sport, Club and Grand Touring; the RF is listed for Club and Grand Touring.
Which trim and transmission combinations are available?
Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 U.S. pricing and packaging release lists a six-speed manual for Sport and Club. Grand Touring is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic with steering-wheel paddle shifters. The automatic is therefore an option only on Grand Touring in the listed lineup.

Mazda says, “A standard six-speed manual transmission remains at the heart of the MX-5 Miata driving experience.” For buyers drawn to the participatory quality Warner describes, the manual is the natural fit; Grand Touring’s automatic gives buyers who prefer not to shift themselves another choice.

These are starting MSRPs in Mazda’s January 27, 2026 release, not dealer quotes. Mazda later said its destination and handling charge became $1,315 ($1,360 in Alaska) effective August 11, 2026. MSRP excludes destination, taxes, title and additional fees; Mazda says, “Dealers set actual sale prices.” A $5,050 Brembo/BBS/Recaro package is listed for the Club soft top and is included for Club RF.

What equipment and fuel economy does Mazda list?
Mazda’s 2026 U.S. release says all models use an 8.8-inch infotainment display, with touch functionality when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and Alexa Built-in integration. The release also lists safety features including Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Attention Alert, Vehicle Exit Warning and Secondary Collision Reduction; availability can vary by trim or package.

The same compactness that helps make the car feel agile also limits its usefulness as a do-everything vehicle. It has two seats, tight cabin space and limited cargo room. Warner also describes highway wind, road and engine noise and a firm ride. Those are review impressions rather than universal measurements, but they are worth weighing if you regularly drive long distances, carry passengers or need substantial luggage space.

Is the 2026 MX-5 Miata right for you?
The Miata’s argument is focused: make the drive itself rewarding, rather than maximize power, room or isolation. If that matches what you want from a sports car, compare the roof style, trim and transmission combinations against your needs and budget. If comfort, cargo capacity or effortless long-distance cruising takes priority, its compromises may matter more than its appeal.
