The 2026 range combines two inline-six outputs, a plug-in hybrid, several trims and different seating layouts. A credible week-long review must identify the exact vehicle before discussing fuel economy, passenger space, towing or performance.
The specifications below establish what Mazda and IIHS document. They do not substitute for measured fuel use, ride impressions, third-row observations or recurring annoyances from a particular test vehicle.
Which 2026 CX-90 are you driving?
Mazda lists the gasoline CX-90 as an inline-six, three-row SUV with seating for up to eight. The separately listed plug-in-hybrid models seat up to seven. That difference alone can change access, child-seat placement and luggage flexibility.

What the inline-six CX-90 delivers on paper
Turbo versus Turbo S
The standard 3.3 Turbo is rated at up to 280 hp and 332 lb-ft. Turbo S models raise that to up to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft. Mazda’s Turbo S figure is tied to recommended 91-octane premium fuel; regular fuel can reduce output. Both gasoline versions use Mazda’s SKYACTIV-Drive eight-speed automatic with manual-shift mode.
Fuel economy is an estimate, not a week-long result
Mazda lists the 2026 Turbo S at 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined, all EPA estimates. Those numbers are not a measured result from a particular driver, route or weather pattern. To report observed economy, record the starting and ending odometer readings, gallons added at the same fill method, traffic, speeds, temperature, payload and fuel grade, then calculate miles divided by gallons.

Strong, clearly separated powertrain choices
The two inline-six outputs give buyers a meaningful choice rather than a minor software difference. The Turbo S offers the higher published torque and power ceiling, while the standard Turbo accepts regular fuel. Which is preferable depends on fuel prices, payload and whether the additional performance matters to your driving.

Flexible passenger and cargo configurations
Mazda lists 14.9 cubic feet behind the third row for Inline 6 models with the three-person second-row bench, expanding to as much as 74.2 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seatbacks folded. The maximum figure is folded-seat cargo volume, not luggage space with all passengers aboard. Verify whether the test vehicle has a bench or captain’s chairs before using either number.
Available towing capability
Mazda says Turbo S models can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with Mazda Genuine Towing Accessories. That is a conditional maximum, not a blanket CX-90 rating. Confirm the vehicle’s hitch, wiring, cooling and accessory setup, then follow the owner’s manual for trailer weight, tongue weight and loading limits. What could drive you nuts during a real week
Third-row access and adult space are questions, not assumptions
“Seats up to eight” establishes capacity, not comfort. A proper evaluation should time entry and exit, try the intended passengers in the third row, install the family’s child seats, check second-row slide or tilt operation and measure whether adults can reach the rear without awkward climbing.
Luggage with every seat occupied
Do not use the 74.2-cubic-foot maximum to answer a road-trip question. Load the bags you actually carry with the third row raised and photograph or measure the remaining floor. The published 14.9-cubic-foot figure applies to the stated Inline 6 bench-seat configuration; another layout may differ.

Fuel and trim-cost friction
Turbo S performance is optimized for premium fuel, and higher trims cost substantially more. A week of short trips can also produce a very different result from the EPA combined estimate. Keep observed fuel use and purchase-price judgments tied to the tested powertrain and local conditions rather than generalizing across the lineup.

These are starting MSRPs cited by Mazda’s September 2025 release. They exclude destination and handling ($1,645, or $1,690 in Alaska in that release), taxes, title and additional fees; dealers set actual sale prices. Mazda also notes a later destination-charge effective date and a May 2026 price increase, so verify the current window sticker before publication or purchase.
Safety rating and its limits
IIHS labels the 2026 CX-90 a Top Safety Pick+. The rating page reports Good results in the listed crashworthiness tests and provides separate crash-avoidance and headlight evaluations. IIHS says many ratings cover 2024–26 models, while its updated moderate-overlap test does not apply to the PHEV. Check the exact test and variant on the IIHS 2026 Mazda CX-90 page. A laboratory rating is evidence from specified tests, not a guarantee of what happens in every real-world crash.
How to make a week-long CX-90 review reliable
- Identify the vehicle: record model year, Turbo or Turbo S, PHEV status, trim, seating layout and options.
- Test the family use case: install child seats, seat the intended third-row passengers and load normal luggage.
- Measure fuel: log miles, gallons, fuel grade, traffic, weather, payload and route; label the result as observed.
- Check towing only if equipped: verify Mazda Genuine Towing Accessories and the vehicle’s rated limits before attaching a trailer.
- Log annoyances as repeats: distinguish a one-time setup issue from a problem encountered on multiple trips.
- Separate impressions from specifications: cite Mazda for published figures and IIHS for test results; identify personal observations as observations from that exact vehicle.
The Bottom Line
The 2026 Mazda CX-90 is best understood as a family of vehicles: regular-fuel Turbo models, premium-fuel Turbo S models and a separate PHEV with different seating and test applicability. Its published strengths include available inline-six power, useful maximum cargo volume and conditional 5,000-pound Turbo S towing, while the questions most likely to decide ownership—third-row usability, all-seat luggage space and real fuel consumption—must be answered with the exact vehicle and measured experience.
