At a glance: which 2026 CX-50 should you buy?
For most shoppers, the 2026 Mazda CX-50 2.5 S Preferred is the best all-around choice. It keeps the standard 187-horsepower engine and all-wheel drive while avoiding the large price increase for the turbo powertrain or the equipment premium of the upper trims.

Choose the Hybrid Preferred instead if fuel economy and frequent stop-and-go driving matter most. Its official estimate is 38 mpg combined, versus 26 mpg combined for the naturally aspirated 2.5 S models. Choose a 2.5 Turbo if you need stronger acceleration or up to 3,500 pounds of properly equipped towing capacity. Among the turbo models, the Turbo Meridian Edition best combines the CX-50’s outdoor styling with the stronger engine.

Why the Hybrid Premium Plus price may look inconsistent
Mazda’s September 16, 2025 pricing announcement listed the Hybrid Premium Plus at $40,150. Mazda’s current comparison page and its February 2026 official pricing document list $40,450. This guide uses the newer current figure. Verify the vehicle’s window sticker and the dealer’s buyer’s order before treating any MSRP as final.
Three CX-50 powertrains, three different buying cases
2.5 S: the conventional value choice
The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque on regular 87-octane gasoline. It works with a six-speed automatic transmission, standard i-Activ all-wheel drive, and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select with Sport and Off-Road modes.
Mazda’s current EPA estimate is 24 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined for the 2.5 S models. This is the simplest value proposition in the range: standard AWD and the CX-50’s design at the lowest prices. The trade-offs are less acceleration than the turbo and substantially worse fuel economy than the hybrid.
Hybrid: the efficiency choice
The hybrid uses a 219-horsepower 2.5-liter hybrid system, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, and electronic all-wheel drive. Mazda lists 39 mpg city, 37 highway, and 38 combined. It has 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 56.3 cubic feet with them folded, according to Mazda’s comparison data. Maximum towing capacity is 1,500 pounds.
The Hybrid Preferred starts at $34,750—only $2,850 above the 2.5 S Preferred and $150 below the 2.5 S Premium. That makes it especially worth investigating for high-mileage owners and drivers who spend much of their time in urban traffic. The price premium is less compelling for low-mileage buyers focused on the lowest purchase cost, or for anyone who needs more than 1,500 pounds of towing capacity.
2.5 Turbo: the performance and towing choice
The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is rated at 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium 93-octane fuel. On regular 87-octane fuel, Mazda lists 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. That fuel distinction matters: the 256-hp headline figure does not apply when the engine is running regular gasoline.
The turbo uses a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, standard i-Activ AWD, and Sport and Off-Road Mi-Drive modes. Properly equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds. That is the clearest reason to pay for the turbo, along with stronger passing and acceleration. The costs are a higher starting price and the possibility of higher fuel expense if you regularly use premium gasoline.
What you get at each trim level
2.5 S Select — $29,900
The Select is the price leader, but it is not bare-bones. Standard equipment includes Alexa Built-in, wireless phone charging, a 10.25-inch center display, four USB-C ports, an eight-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and half-leatherette seating.
It also has 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and black roof rails. Buy it when keeping the initial price as low as possible is more important than upgrading the cabin. The $2,500 step to Preferred is significant because the next trim adds a more appealing convenience and safety balance.
2.5 S Preferred — $32,400
This is the strongest default trim for a typical CX-50 buyer. It retains the naturally aspirated AWD powertrain and adds a more satisfying equipment mix without requiring the cost of the hybrid, turbo engine, or top luxury trim.

In other words, Preferred is the sensible baseline; Meridian is the appearance-focused variation on that theme.
2.5 S Meridian Edition — $33,150
The naturally aspirated Meridian Edition costs $750 more than the 2.5 S Preferred but does not change the engine. Its purpose is visual and lifestyle-oriented: gloss-black Mazda emblems and badges, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, black roof rails, side rocker garnish, hood graphics, and outdoor-specific accessories.
Mazda’s release description identifies selected exterior colors, including Jet Black Mica, Polymetal Gray, and Zircon Sand. Availability can vary by configuration and inventory. Choose this trim for the Meridian appearance and all-terrain-tire theme—not for extra power or additional towing capability.

2.5 S Premium — $34,900
The highest naturally aspirated trim adds the upscale features many shoppers associate with a premium crossover: black leather seating, 20-inch black metallic machine-finish wheels with all-season tires, ventilated front seats, a power six-way passenger seat, two-position seat memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Traffic Sign Recognition, Bose 12-speaker audio, a windshield-wiper de-icer, and SiriusXM with a complementary trial subscription.
Mazda also offers a White Interior configuration with white leather, 20-inch silver wheels, and silver roof rails. The main problem is positioning: at $34,900, this trim costs only $150 more than Hybrid Preferred. If you want leather and comfort features, Premium is logical; if you want lower fuel consumption, the Hybrid Preferred deserves the money instead.
Hybrid Preferred — $34,750
Hybrid Preferred is the most rational entry into the hybrid lineup. In addition to the 219-hp hybrid system and electronic AWD, it has Power and Trail Mi-Drive modes and Mazda’s 38-mpg combined estimate.
It is a particularly important comparison against the 2.5 S Premium. The hybrid costs $150 less, although it does not provide exactly the same premium cabin equipment. For a driver covering many miles each year, the powertrain and fuel-economy advantage may be more valuable than leather, larger wheels, and extra comfort features.
Hybrid Premium — $38,150
Hybrid Premium keeps the same hybrid output, drivetrain, and published fuel-economy estimate as the lower hybrid trim. Its $3,400 increase over Hybrid Preferred buys equipment such as leather-trimmed seating, ventilated front seats, black roof rails, and black exhaust outlets.

It makes sense for a buyer who has already chosen the hybrid and wants a more upscale interior but does not need the additional equipment of Premium Plus.
Hybrid Premium Plus — $40,450
The top hybrid adds 19-inch alloy wheels with black metallic and machine-cut finishes, an Active Driving Display, and heated rear seats. It retains the same hybrid powertrain and published 38-mpg combined estimate, so the $2,300 increase over Hybrid Premium is for equipment rather than efficiency or performance.
At this price, compare it carefully with the $40,400 Turbo Meridian Edition. The Hybrid Premium Plus favors efficiency and upper-level hybrid equipment; the Turbo Meridian favors power, towing, and outdoor styling.
2.5 Turbo — $37,900
The standard Turbo is the least expensive way to get Mazda’s turbocharged engine. It builds on the conveniences of the 2.5 S Premium and adds larger dual exhaust outlets, paddle shifters, Signature LED lighting, automatic power-folding mirrors with memory, an Active Driving Display, and other turbo-specific equipment.
It is the right turbo when acceleration is the priority and you do not need the Meridian Edition’s appearance package or the Premium Plus driver’s-assistance suite.
2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition — $40,400
Turbo Meridian combines the turbo powertrain with the CX-50’s most recognizable outdoor treatment: 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, side rocker garnish, hood graphics, outdoor-specific accessories, black roof rails, and gloss-black emblems and badges.
It also includes terracotta leather seating, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Mazda Online Navigation with over-the-air updates, and Secondary Collision Reduction. It costs $2,500 less than Turbo Premium Plus and is the best fit for buyers who want the vehicle’s adventurous identity without giving up turbo performance.
2.5 Turbo Premium Plus — $42,900
The range-topping conventional CX-50 is aimed at buyers who specifically want the most extensive available camera and driver-assistance equipment. Mazda lists a 360-degree View Monitor with See-Through View, Emergency Lane Keeping, Blind Spot Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Smart Brake Support, Smart Brake Support with Turn-Across Traffic and Front Crossing Detection, frameless auto-dimming rearview mirrors with HomeLink, and auto-dimming for the driver’s-side mirror.

How much will you actually pay?
Start with the MSRP, then add the destination charge, taxes, title, license fees, options, and any dealer-installed accessories. Mazda’s published figures are not out-the-door prices, and actual dealer pricing, incentives, financing terms, and inventory vary by location and time.
Before signing, ask for a written buyer’s order showing the vehicle price, destination, documentation or dealer fees, accessories, taxes, registration charges, trade-in credit, down payment, interest rate, and total amount financed. If you are comparing monthly payments, estimate your CX-50 payment only after deciding the full purchase price; a lower monthly payment can simply reflect a longer loan term or a larger amount financed.
Insurance is another ownership cost that is not reflected in Mazda’s MSRP. It is sensible to compare auto-insurance quotes before buying, because premiums can vary substantially by driver, location, coverage, deductible, and vehicle configuration. No single insurance price can be responsibly quoted for every CX-50 buyer.

Useful CX-50 ownership accessories
The CX-50’s outdoor positioning makes cabin and cargo protection more than decorative add-ons, particularly for owners who regularly carry snow, mud, sand, pets, sports equipment, or camping gear. Mazda lists custom-fitted all-weather mats, and WeatherTech’s 2026 CX-50 catalog lists floor liners and all-weather floor mats.
If you shop for 2026 Mazda CX-50 all-weather floor mats, confirm the model year, body style, gas-versus-hybrid fitment, seat configuration, and retention-hook compatibility. Also check whether the mats are designed to replace the factory mats or to be installed over them. A listing that says only “CX-50” is not enough evidence that it fits every 2026 configuration.
A CX-50 cargo liner is another sensible purchase for wet or dirty gear. Verify the cargo-floor configuration and whether the liner allows access to underfloor storage or adjustable cargo features. WeatherTech also lists a sunshade, seat protector, mudflaps, bumper protector, and sill protector for the 2026 CX-50; those are useful secondary categories, but they should come after choosing the right powertrain and trim.
Final recommendation
Buy the 2.5 S Preferred unless you have a specific reason to choose another powertrain. It offers the clearest balance of price, equipment, standard AWD, and everyday usefulness.
Move to the Hybrid Preferred when you drive enough miles for 38 mpg combined to matter more than premium cabin features. Move to the 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition when you need the turbo engine, want up to 3,500 pounds of properly equipped towing capacity, or strongly prefer the outdoor styling. Choose the Turbo Premium Plus only when its advanced camera and driver-assistance features justify making it the most expensive CX-50 in the range.
Finally, verify the current window sticker, destination charge, equipment, fitment, incentives, and dealer quote immediately before purchase. Pricing and inventory are volatile, and a trim that looks best on paper may not be the best deal at a particular dealership.
