Mazda has unusually high stakes riding on the redesigned 2026 CX-5: the company says the nameplate represented about a quarter of its global sales, or roughly 350,000 vehicles, in its last full fiscal year. Mazda called introducing the new generation successfully “an extremely important mission for our company.” That is Mazda’s strategic assessment—not proof that the CX-5 will succeed or fail.
For U.S. buyers, the 2026 model is a third-generation redesign with more room, a larger touchscreen with Google built-in and standard all-wheel drive. It launches with one gasoline powertrain and five trims, starting at $29,990 before destination and other fees.
Why Mazda calls the CX-5 a must-succeed crossover
The CX-5 is not a niche product in Mazda’s lineup. In its February 2026 FY March 2026 third-quarter results presentation, Mazda said the nameplate accounted for about one quarter of global sales and cited roughly 350,000 CX-5s sold in the last full fiscal year. The company’s presentation transcript put the stakes plainly: “The successful introduction of the new CX-5 is an extremely important mission for our company.” Mazda’s FY March 2026 third-quarter presentation is the source for both figures and the statement.
That makes the redesign an execution challenge as much as a product launch. Mazda says it is investing in features customers value, including interior space and advanced technology, while pursuing cost innovations elsewhere. The company has not published independent evidence establishing what those changes will cost to deliver or how they will affect sales.

What changed on the 2026 CX-5?
Mazda calls the 2026 vehicle an all-new, third-generation CX-5. In its July 2025 reveal, the company said it is 4.5 inches longer overall and in wheelbase, and more than half an inch wider than its predecessor. Mazda’s pricing announcement specifies a 110-inch wheelbase. Mazda’s reveal announcement and U.S. pricing release describe the changes.
Mazda attributes the larger dimensions to improved rear-seat room and cargo usability. It reports larger rear door openings and increased rear leg, knee and headroom; the cargo area is almost two inches longer and over an inch higher, while the lift-in height is reduced by more than half an inch. These are manufacturer-reported design and packaging claims, not independent measurements or road-test findings.

The company also highlights evolved Kodo design, a larger touchscreen with Google built-in and an expanded driver-assistance offering. Those are stated equipment and design changes; they do not by themselves establish how the interface works in practice or how the vehicle performs.
U.S. launch engine, AWD and fuel economy
For the U.S.-market launch, Mazda lists a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. i-Activ all-wheel drive is standard. Mazda USA gives EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 30 highway and 26 combined. These are manufacturer-published specifications and EPA estimates, not independent test results. 2026 Mazda CX-5 U.S. trims and starting prices
Mazda USA lists five trims. Starting MSRPs exclude taxes, title, license fees and destination; actual dealer pricing varies.

Mazda’s January 13 pricing release says destination and handling becomes $1,595, or $1,640 in Alaska, effective August 11, 2026. Mazda’s vehicle page displays an earlier amount of $1,495, or $1,540 in Alaska; the dated August update is the newer figure. Confirm the applicable amount with Mazda or a dealer when pricing a vehicle. Mazda’s pricing release and the Mazda USA vehicle page list the figures.

What the sales figures do—and do not—show
The CX-5’s importance to Mazda is clear in the company’s stated sales share and launch language. The broader company results provide context, but they are not evidence that the new CX-5 will maintain that scale.
Mazda reported global sales volume of 1.223 million for fiscal year 2026, down 6.1% year over year. Its full-year results said European sales showed a recovery trend after the introduction of the Mazda6e and new CX-5; Mazda did not attribute that recovery to the CX-5 alone. The results therefore do not establish the new model’s individual effect on regional sales or its longer-term performance. Mazda’s FY2026 consolidated results cover the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, and were published in May 2026.

The nameplate also has substantial cumulative volume. Mazda announced in January 2026 that global CX-5 production and sales had reached five million by the end of 2025. An earlier July 2025 reveal reported more than 1.6 million sold in the United States and 4.5 million globally since the model debuted in 2012. These are tallies from different announcement dates, not conflicting counts for the same date. Mazda’s January 2026 announcement gives the later cumulative milestone; the July 2025 reveal gives the earlier figures.
What buyers can reasonably conclude
The 2026 CX-5 is a larger, redesigned model that Mazda says adds rear-seat and cargo usability while bringing a larger screen and expanded driver assistance. In the U.S., its launch formula is straightforward: one 187-hp gasoline engine, a six-speed automatic, standard AWD and five trims. The pricing and equipment make it possible to compare the model with alternatives, but the available evidence here does not establish a segment winner, independent real-world fuel economy, or tested comfort, handling or safety performance.
Mazda’s own numbers explain the “must-succeed” framing: the CX-5 contributes a large share of company sales, and management has explicitly described the launch as an important mission. Whether the redesign meets that challenge will depend on its reception and results, which the launch specifications alone cannot determine.
