It depends on where and how you ride. The 2026 KTM 1390 Super Adventure R combines a 1,350 cm³ engine rated by KTM at 173 PS with long-travel, off-road-oriented suspension and 21/18-inch wheels. That makes it a compelling fit on paper for fast, open routes and loaded travel, but its 231 kg weight without fuel and 880 mm seat height are meaningful considerations on slow, technical trails. Bigger is not automatically better: rider fit, terrain and manageability matter more than displacement alone.
What does the bigger engine give you?
KTM specifies a 1,350 cm³, 75-degree twin producing 173 PS and 145 Nm. The company describes its Camshift variable-valve system as using different inlet-cam profiles at low and high revs, with the stated aim of improving low-rpm rideability. That is KTM’s explanation of the technology, not an independently measured finding about how the motorcycle behaves on the road.
The output and displacement suggest substantial power reserve for fast road travel or a loaded trip. The available specifications alone cannot establish how much more useful that power is in a particular situation, or how the bike compares with a named rival. A test ride is the way to judge the actual power delivery.
Is the R set up for the riding you do?
The R’s hardware is distinctly off-road-oriented. KTM specifies a 48 mm WP XPLOR fork and a PDS rear shock, each with 240 mm of travel, plus spoked 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. KTM positions this suspension package for harder off-road use than the 1390 S and S EVO. The R also has off-road ride modes and a factory crash bar.

That equipment points toward rougher terrain, but it does not make the bike light or easy to handle at low speed. The combination may suit open gravel and long-distance routes better than tight, slow trails for riders who value easy maneuvering and recovery. No source here establishes a head-to-head agility advantage or disadvantage against another model.
How much do weight and height matter?
KTM lists the R at 231 kg without fuel and 248 kg fully fueled. The seat is 880 mm high, ground clearance is 242 mm, and fuel capacity is approximately 23 L. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

Weight and seat height are practical factors when stopping on uneven ground, turning around on a narrow trail or picking the motorcycle up after a fall. Before buying, assess how it feels with your boots on the ground and how confidently you can move it at walking pace. On a test ride, pay particular attention to standing ergonomics, slow-speed turns and the balance of the bike with the fuel load you expect to carry.
What equipment is standard, and what is optional?
KTM’s product page lists Rain, Street, Sport, Offroad and Custom ride modes as standard, with Rally mode optional. The listed equipment also includes traction control, cornering ABS and customizable ABS modes, cruise control, tire-pressure monitoring, keyless operation and KTMconnect. Front radar, Quickshifter Plus and Hill Hold Control are identified as optional equipment. Feature packaging can vary by market, so confirm what is included on the particular bike and what costs extra.

What does the 2026 KTM 1390 Super Adventure R cost in the U.S.?
KTM’s U.S. product page lists a base MSRP of $21,649 plus $800 freight. This is a U.S.-specific manufacturer listing, accessed October 5, 2026; it is not an out-the-door price. Taxes, dealer charges, optional equipment, local pricing and availability can change the amount you pay. Confirm the current figure and the exact configuration with a KTM dealer.
KTM’s U.S. page also states: “Valve clearance checks only necessary after 60,000 km.” That is a manufacturer claim about the valve-clearance-check interval; it does not establish total maintenance cost or overall reliability.

How to decide whether bigger is better for you
- Consider the R if you want an off-road-oriented chassis, long suspension travel and a powerful engine for open routes or loaded travel, and you are comfortable managing a tall, heavy motorcycle.
- Think carefully if most of your riding is on tight, slow trails, or if low-speed confidence, easy recovery and an accessible seat height are top priorities.
- Compare your real use across terrain, rider fit, power delivery and the equipment included in your market. KTM identifies the 1390 S and S EVO as same-family alternatives with a different suspension orientation, but the available figures do not support a balanced comparison of their weight, comfort, speed or value.
- Test before committing: sit on the bike, try slow-speed maneuvers and, if possible, ride it in conditions similar to your regular routes. Specifications cannot tell you whether its size and power feel manageable to you.
