Kia lists the Sorento LX at $32,390, while Toyota’s September 5, 2025 announcement lists the gas Highlander XLE from $45,270 and the Highlander Hybrid XLE from $47,020. Toyota said the 2026 lineup was expected at U.S. dealers beginning in November 2025. Those are launch-period manufacturer prices, not evidence of today’s inventory or transaction prices. Seating and passenger space: seven seats standard, eight available on select Highlanders
Kia lists seven-passenger Sorento configurations and versions with second-row captain’s chairs that seat six. Toyota describes the Highlander as a seven-seater with captain’s chairs; an optional second-row bench raises capacity to eight on gas and hybrid XLE and gas Limited grades. Verify the exact build: seating capacity depends on the trim and second-row configuration.

Published legroom figures show different strengths by row, but they come from a secondary comparison and are not established as measurements taken under one shared protocol.

Car and Driver’s comparison lists these row-by-row dimensions. On those figures, the Highlander has more listed first-row legroom, while the Sorento has more in the second and third rows. Numbers alone do not establish how comfortable either third row will be for a particular passenger; bring the people who will use it and test the actual vehicle. Cargo space: compare with the third row up as well as folded
The most useful family-SUV cargo number may be the space left when all seats are occupied. Kia publishes 12.6 cubic feet behind the Sorento’s third row. Kelley Blue Book’s comparison reports 16.0 cubic feet behind the Highlander’s last row. That last-row comparison is from a third party, not a single standardized test spanning both manufacturers’ published figures.

These are source-reported capacities, not results from a common cargo test. Kia gives SAE cargo volumes for the Sorento; Toyota’s 84.3-cubic-foot figure is a maximum with the rear two rows folded. Fuel economy: separate gas from hybrid and FWD from AWD
The DOE and EPA’s 2026 Fuel Economy Guide lists Sorento ratings by engine and drivetrain. Toyota’s 2026 announcement gives manufacturer-estimated combined figures for the Highlander. The sources therefore do not provide an identical type of figure for every version; check the exact vehicle’s window sticker or configuration on FuelEconomy.gov before comparing a specific pair.

The Sorento’s listed FWD non-turbo entry has the highest combined gas figure in this set, at 26 mpg. The Highlander’s 24-mpg combined figure is Toyota’s estimate; it is not a like-for-like EPA city/highway breakdown alongside the DOE/EPA guide entries. The figures are close at the combined level: the guide lists the Sorento Hybrid at 37 mpg FWD and 34 mpg AWD, while Toyota estimates 35 mpg for the AWD Highlander Hybrid. The Sorento’s higher figure applies to FWD, so it is not an AWD-to-AWD comparison. The Highlander Hybrid’s estimate comes from Toyota’s 2026 announcement.

The gas Sorento offers a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an available 281-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter. Kia lists both FWD and AWD configurations, with fuel economy affected by engine and drive layout. See Kia’s 2026 Sorento model information.

Toyota lists a 265-horsepower, 310-lb-ft 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder for the gas Highlander and says AWD is standard across its 2026 gas models. The Highlander Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with electric motors for 243 net combined horsepower and standard Electronic On-Demand AWD. Toyota states towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds for Highlander Hybrid grades. Kelley Blue Book reports 5,000 pounds for the gas Highlander and 2,000 pounds for the Sorento configuration in its comparison; towing limits depend on the exact trim and equipment, so confirm the vehicle’s ratings before towing. Features and safety: compare the actual trim’s standard equipment
Toyota says its 2026 Highlander includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ as standard. The suite includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Toyota lists an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen as standard and a 12.3-inch screen as available; upper Highlander Hybrid trims include a 12.3-inch screen and JBL audio.
Kia’s Sorento LX feature information includes automatic emergency braking technology with pedestrian, cyclist and junction-turning detection. The model line also offers features such as heated and ventilated seats, heated second-row seating, a panoramic sunroof and a hands-free power liftgate, depending on trim and package. These conveniences are not standard on every Sorento.
The published descriptions do not establish a universal technology winner: equipment depends on grade and package. Compare the window stickers for the two builds you would actually buy. No matched 2026 crash-test ratings are included here, so this comparison does not support a safety-rating verdict.
