The 2026 Kawasaki Vulcan S ABS starts at $8,149 in the U.S.; Harley-Davidson’s 2026 Nightster starts at $9,999+. That is a starting-price difference of at least $1,850—not “thousands” in the plural against Harley’s least expensive comparable modern cruiser-style option. The comparison is useful, but these are not identical motorcycles: Kawasaki calls the Vulcan S a sport cruiser, while Harley places the Nightster in its Sport family.
Which Kawasaki Vulcan is being compared?
“Vulcan” is Kawasaki’s cruiser family; the specific motorcycle behind this price comparison is the 2026 Vulcan S, particularly the ABS trim. Kawasaki lists the non-ABS version at $7,649 and the ABS version at $8,149 before destination and other charges. The Vulcan S Cafe ABS is a separate trim with a listed base MSRP of $8,749. Kawasaki’s 2026 Vulcan S listing and Cafe listing provide the model-year prices and trim details.
How much does the Vulcan S cost?
Kawasaki’s U.S. 2026 listing gives a $685 destination charge. That makes the listed Vulcan S ABS price plus destination $8,834 before taxes, title, license, dealer fees, options, or other charges. Kawasaki says its base MSRP excludes those additional costs, that the dealer sets actual retail price, and that pricing may change. The non-ABS base MSRP is $7,649; the ABS base MSRP is $8,149. Ask a dealer for a written, itemized out-the-door quote for the exact trim and model year.
How much cheaper is it than a Harley?
Harley-Davidson lists the 2026 Nightster starting at $9,999+. Comparing that starting figure with the Vulcan S ABS base MSRP produces a gap of at least $1,850. The figures are manufacturer-published U.S. starting prices, not dealer transaction prices, and they do not establish the final difference after fees, taxes, options, or negotiated pricing. Kawasaki’s $685 destination charge is separately listed; the Harley price is presented as a starting price with a plus sign. Get matching itemized quotes before treating the gap as an out-the-door saving. Kawasaki’s listing and Harley-Davidson’s Nightster page are the manufacturers’ sources.

“Costs thousands less” overstates the comparison with the least expensive Nightster starting price: the stated difference is $1,850, which is more than one thousand dollars but less than two thousand. A higher-priced Harley makes a larger gap, but it is a different comparison. Harley’s 2026 cruiser lineup lists the Street Bob from $14,999+ and the Super Glide from $15,999+; the Nightster is shown separately in the Sport family. Harley-Davidson’s 2026 cruiser lineup shows those starting prices.
How do their engines and output compare?
The Vulcan S uses a 649cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC parallel-twin engine with a six-speed gearbox and sealed-chain final drive. Kawasaki publishes output of 60 hp at 7,500 rpm and 46.5 lb-ft at 6,600 rpm.

The Nightster uses Harley-Davidson’s 975T Revolution Max engine. Harley lists 91 hp and 72 ft-lb at 5,750 rpm. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not results from a side-by-side test; the different engine designs and reported specifications do not by themselves establish how the bikes feel or perform in real-world riding.

Which one is easier to fit to the rider?
Kawasaki’s key fit feature is adjustability. It describes ERGO-FIT as offering 18 possible configurations using Reduced Reach, Mid Reach, and Extended Reach options for the seat, footpegs, and handlebar. The rear suspension also has a seven-position preload adjuster. These options give prospective riders concrete fit settings to check during a dealer visit; they do not guarantee that the motorcycle will suit every body or riding preference. See Kawasaki’s Vulcan S specifications and its product description.
Harley lists the Nightster’s laden seat height as 27.1 inches and its running weight as 481 lb. Those figures are useful points of comparison, but they are not a complete ergonomic assessment. Sit on both bikes in the intended riding position and, where possible, test ride them; reach to the bars and controls, leg position, balance at low speed, and comfort matter alongside the published measurements.

What equipment and ownership factors should you compare?
Harley lists selectable ride modes and rider safety enhancements for the Nightster. Kawasaki’s cited Vulcan S specifications establish its engine, transmission, final drive, and fit adjustments, but do not provide a directly matched list of rider aids in the comparison information here. Confirm the exact equipment on the specific trim and motorcycle you are considering rather than assuming the lower starting price means equivalent equipment.
- Match trim and ABS: compare the Vulcan S ABS with the Nightster as actually equipped, and confirm whether any options affect the Harley’s quoted price.
- Compare out-the-door figures: request itemized dealer quotes for the same model year, including destination and all local fees, taxes, and registration costs.
- Assess fit and use: evaluate seat, peg, and handlebar position, intended riding, and comfort rather than relying on style or displacement alone.
- Check local support: dealer access and service availability depend on where you live; compare them locally. The available manufacturer figures do not establish maintenance costs, reliability, insurance rates, or resale value.
Kawasaki offers a Vulcan S soft saddlebag set and model-specific KQR saddlebag support hardware in its accessory listing. Check year and model fitment and whether support hardware is sold separately before pricing a luggage setup. Kawasaki’s Vulcan S accessory listing identifies the relevant products.

Which bike makes more sense?
The Vulcan S ABS is the lower-starting-price choice in this specific 2026 comparison, with a manufacturer-listed base-price gap of at least $1,850 versus the Nightster. That is a meaningful difference, but not proof of lower total ownership cost or equal value: the models differ in engine configuration, published output, equipment, and fit features, and the listed prices are not final dealer quotes.
Choose between them by comparing exact trims, fit, included equipment, local dealer quotes, and the riding experience you want. There is no evidence here to make a reliable claim that one is more dependable, cheaper to insure, less expensive to maintain, or stronger in resale value.
