The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is back after a three-model-year hiatus, now with a hybrid-only powertrain and standard Active Drive I 4×4. It does not need to be plugged in. Jeep claims 37 mpg combined and more than 500 miles of range, while Edmunds’ first drive found a smooth, comfortable everyday SUV—not a sporty one. Its standard 4×4 adds traction and selectable terrain modes, but the Cherokee lacks a low-range transfer case, an important distinction for serious off-road use.
What’s new for the 2026 Jeep Cherokee?
The Cherokee returns for model year 2026 after three model years away. Jeep announced the comeback on May 29, 2025, positioning the vehicle as a redesigned entry in its SUV lineup. Jeep’s announcement set the return for late 2025.
In its 2025 launch release, Stellantis said Limited and Overland models were planned to arrive first, followed by the base trim and Laredo in early 2026. That was a launch schedule, not confirmation of current dealer inventory. The release also listed U.S. starting prices by trim; check Jeep or a dealer for current pricing, incentives, equipment and availability.
Is the 2026 Jeep Cherokee a plug-in hybrid?
No. The Cherokee uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid system, and Jeep says it does not need to be plugged in. The gas engine and electric motor or motors work together, with regenerative braking recovering energy as the vehicle slows. It is a conventional, non-plug-in hybrid—not a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric vehicle. Jeep’s FAQ explains the hybrid and charging arrangement.

Jeep lists output at 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. Edmunds reports those figures were achieved using premium fuel; regular fuel is permitted. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results.
What is the 2026 Jeep Cherokee’s MPG and range?
Jeep estimates 37 mpg combined and a driving range of more than 500 miles. These are Jeep/Stellantis claims, not independent real-world results or a fuel-economy test reported by Edmunds. Actual mileage and range will vary with driving conditions, fuel, load and other factors. Jeep’s FAQ lists its current figures, also stated in the 2025 launch release.
Is the Cherokee 4×4 or AWD?
Jeep calls the standard system Active Drive I 4×4 and says it is included on every trim. The system provides selectable terrain modes, giving the Cherokee a traction-oriented feature set beyond a front-wheel-drive layout.

That 4×4 label does not mean the Cherokee has the hardware of a traditional low-range off-roader. Edmunds notes there is no low-range transfer case. That matters when comparing it with vehicles built for sustained, slow-speed crawling over difficult terrain: the Cherokee’s standard system should not be treated as equivalent to a dedicated low-range setup. Jeep’s release describes the standard 4×4 system; Edmunds provides the low-range qualification.

In a California drive, Edmunds reviewer Reese Counts described the Cherokee as easy to drive, with light steering and a compliant suspension. He found the hybrid powertrain smooth and said it did not feel slower than rivals in ordinary driving. He also characterized it as neither sporty nor especially fun. Those are review impressions, not instrumented performance measurements. Read Edmunds’ first-drive review.
That mix points to an everyday-use emphasis: approachable road manners and hybrid efficiency, rather than a performance-oriented character. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf described the vehicle in the launch release as a “striking, turbocharged vehicle with 500-plus miles of range, uncompromising safety and the capability to chase every adventure.” That is promotional language; the practical limits of the 4×4 system are worth weighing alongside it. The quote appears in Stellantis’ launch release.

How much can the 2026 Cherokee tow, and what are its dimensions?
Jeep lists a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The launch release also gives 8 inches of ground clearance, a 19.6-degree approach angle and a 29.4-degree departure angle. These are manufacturer-published specifications; towing suitability depends on the trailer, load and vehicle configuration, so consult the owner’s manual and vehicle labels before towing. Jeep’s FAQ and the launch release state the towing figure.
Passenger and cargo space
Edmunds reports 33.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 68.3 cubic feet with those seats folded. Its review says the larger dimensions improve rear passenger space, while cargo capacity remains below some competitors. It also notes that the Cherokee is longer than the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. The comparison is useful context, but the available figures do not support a same-condition numerical cargo or price ranking across those models. Edmunds’ review covers the cabin and cargo space.

What technology and safety features are included?
Stellantis’ launch release lists a 10.25-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. It also identifies multiple driver-assistance features as standard. The release does not establish the exact equipment of every current vehicle in dealer stock, so verify trim-specific features and options with the vehicle’s window sticker or Jeep’s current materials. Who should consider the 2026 Cherokee?
