Add Honda’s $1,195 destination charge and the effective starting price is $43,195. The available Prelude Hybrid Two-Tone costs $42,500 before destination, or $43,695 with destination included. Premium exterior paint, dealer accessories, markups, documentation fees, and government charges can raise the final transaction price.
For that money, the sixth-generation Prelude is a 200-horsepower, front-wheel-drive hybrid liftback coupe with four seats, a 44-mpg combined EPA rating, adaptive dampers, Type R-related chassis hardware, and standard premium equipment. It is a polished sport-oriented grand tourer—not a manual, turbocharged, rear-wheel-drive successor to the classic Preludes, and not a Civic Type R coupe.

What is the 2026 Honda Prelude?
The 2026 Prelude is the sixth generation of Honda’s two-door nameplate and its first U.S. version in roughly 24 years. Honda positions it as a specialty sports model for the electrified era. The global Prelude went on sale in Japan on September 5, 2025, while the U.S. model is sold as a 2026 vehicle. Honda’s global announcement describes the car as a liftback sports model combining hybrid efficiency with a more engaging chassis; see Honda’s official Prelude announcement.

In practical terms, the Prelude is a two-door, four-seat liftback coupe. Its rear seats are best treated as occasional-use seating, but the large hatch opening and folding rear seatback make it more useful than a conventional coupe with a small trunk. The powertrain is hybrid-only in the United States, and there is no manual transmission, turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive system, or rear-wheel-drive option.
The closest description is a sporty hybrid grand tourer. It is intended to be efficient and comfortable enough for daily use while adding sharper steering, adaptive damping, stronger brakes, and more chassis sophistication than a normal Civic Hybrid. Its connection to the Civic Type R is real but limited: it borrows selected chassis hardware and engineering ideas, not the Type R’s complete powertrain or performance mission.
2026 Honda Prelude pricing and configurations
| U.S. configuration | MSRP before destination | Destination | Price before tax, title, and registration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelude Hybrid | $42,000 | $1,195 | $43,195 |
| Prelude Hybrid Two-Tone | $42,500 | $1,195 | $43,695 |
Honda lists the base Prelude MSRP as $42,000 and identifies destination separately. That distinction matters because some reviews describe approximately $43,195 as the starting price; that figure is the $42,000 MSRP plus the $1,195 destination charge, not the vehicle’s base MSRP. Honda’s current U.S. pricing and configuration information is available on the official Prelude page.
Real-world price examples
- Base Prelude with standard paint: $43,195 before taxes, title, registration, and dealer charges.
- Prelude Hybrid Two-Tone: $43,695 before taxes and registration.
- Base Prelude with a $455 premium color: $43,650 before taxes and registration.
- Base Prelude with a $655 premium color: $43,850 before taxes and registration.
Premium exterior colors add either $455 or $655, depending on the selected color. Confirm the exact surcharge on the vehicle’s window sticker. Dealer-installed accessories, documentation fees, financing costs, mandatory protection packages, markups, and discounts are not part of Honda’s advertised MSRP calculation. The window sticker is the best authority for the exact car being considered.
Prelude Hybrid versus Prelude Hybrid Two-Tone
The regular Prelude Hybrid is the better value for most shoppers. It includes the same powertrain, adaptive dampers, brakes, wheels, infotainment, audio system, safety equipment, and interior features as the Two-Tone model. The Two-Tone costs $500 more and primarily adds a black roof and black mirror covers, with no additional power or meaningful mechanical upgrade.
Choose the Two-Tone if the contrast-roof appearance is important to you. Do not choose it expecting quicker acceleration, different suspension tuning, or extra performance hardware.

Honda’s main Prelude model page also contains exterior, interior, performance, cargo, wheel, brake, and cockpit photography.

Engine, electric motors, and hybrid system
| Specification | 2026 Honda Prelude |
|---|---|
| Gasoline engine | 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four |
| Engine output | 141 hp at 6,000 rpm |
| Engine torque | 134 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm |
| Electric motor output | 181 hp |
| Electric motor torque | 232 lb-ft from 0 to 2,000 rpm |
| Total system output | 200 hp |
| Redline | 6,250 rpm |
| Compression ratio | 13.9:1 |
| Fuel system | Direct injection |
| Battery | Lithium-ion high-voltage battery |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Transmission | Direct-drive unit |
| Fuel requirement | Regular unleaded |
| Fuel-tank capacity | 10.6 gallons |
The Prelude uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and a two-motor hybrid system. Honda’s official rating is 200 total system horsepower. The 141-hp engine and 181-hp electric motor outputs should not be added together to claim 322 hp; hybrid-system output is not calculated by simply adding the peak ratings of every component.
Electric torque helps the Prelude respond promptly at low speeds, but the car’s overall acceleration is moderate for a vehicle costing more than $43,000 with destination. Its appeal is the combination of smooth hybrid operation, efficiency, and chassis polish rather than maximum straight-line speed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What Honda S+ Shift does—and does not do
Honda S+ Shift is a software-controlled engagement feature. Honda says it simulates an eight-speed transmission by controlling engine speed during acceleration and deceleration. The system coordinates simulated shifts with the instrument display and synthesized engine sound to make the hybrid powertrain feel more like a geared performance car. Honda explains the feature in its global Prelude announcement.
There is, however, no clutch pedal and no conventional eight-speed gearbox. S+ Shift cannot reproduce the mechanical interaction of a manual transmission. It is best understood as an optional layer of theater and driver involvement.
Independent testing also shows why buyers should not confuse the feature with additional performance. Car and Driver found its tested Prelude was slower with S+ Shift engaged than with the system disengaged. It may make the car feel more familiar to someone accustomed to gear changes, but it does not necessarily produce the quickest acceleration.
Performance: quick enough, but not a bargain sprinter
Honda does not publish an official U.S. 0-to-60-mph time in the cited specifications. Independent results vary with tire type, battery state of charge, launch method, temperature, surface, drive mode, and whether S+ Shift is activated:
- MotorTrend: 0–60 mph in 6.4 seconds and the quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds at 90.7 mph. See MotorTrend’s first test.
- Car and Driver: 0–60 mph in 6.5 seconds and the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds at 90 mph. Its test used optional summer tires; see the instrumented test.
The reasonable conclusion is that the Prelude is quick enough for ordinary driving and more impressive in corners than its horsepower suggests, but it is not a straight-line performance bargain. The aggressive styling and Type R-derived hardware can create expectations the 200-hp hybrid system does not fully meet.
Test results also need a tire qualification. Showroom Preludes come with 235/40R19 96V all-season tires. Optional dealer-installed summer tires can improve dry acceleration, braking, and cornering but may change ride comfort, road noise, wet-weather behavior, and replacement cost. Published results using summer tires should not be treated as universal results for every stock Prelude.
Type R-derived chassis hardware and handling
Honda says the Prelude is based on the Civic Type R chassis and uses several performance-oriented components associated with that car:
- Dual-axis MacPherson-strut front suspension.
- Adaptive dampers.
- Large Brembo four-piston front brake calipers.
- Dedicated steering calibration.
- Wide-track proportions.
- Enhanced Agile Handling Assist.
- Type R-related chassis architecture and hardware.
That does not make the Prelude a Type R underneath in the broadest sense. The Civic Type R has a 315-hp turbocharged engine, six-speed manual transmission, front-wheel-drive limited-slip differential, and a more aggressive track-focused mission. The Prelude has none of those key powertrain features. Honda tunes its chassis for a smoother grand-touring balance rather than the Type R’s maximum attack.

| Wheels | 19 x 8.5J Berlina Black alloy wheels |
| Standard tires | 235/40R19 96V all-season tires |
Independent reviews generally praise the steering, cornering behavior, and ride/handling balance. The Prelude feels more composed and special than a standard Civic Hybrid, but it remains heavier and less mechanically focused than a rear-wheel-drive sports car.
Drive modes
All U.S. Preludes include four drive modes:
- Comfort: prioritizes a more relaxed daily-driving character.
- GT: supports the car’s grand-touring role.
- Sport: sharpens the performance-oriented character and incorporates the car’s simulated shift experience.
- Individual: allows the driver to create a personalized combination of settings.
Mode selection changes the car’s responses, but it does not transform the Prelude into a manual sports coupe or add power.
Fuel economy and potential driving range
| EPA rating | 2026 Prelude |
|---|---|
| City | 46 mpg |
| Highway | 41 mpg |
| Combined | 44 mpg |
| Fuel tank | 10.6 gallons |
| Fuel | Regular unleaded |
Both U.S. configurations receive the same EPA rating: 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 44 mpg combined. Using the 44-mpg combined figure and the 10.6-gallon tank produces a simple theoretical calculation of approximately 466 miles per tank. That is not an EPA-rated range or a promise of real-world distance. Speed, weather, temperature, traffic, tire pressure, driving style, and the amount of fuel held in reserve all affect actual range. The underlying figures are listed by Honda in its EPA efficiency and range information.
Dimensions, interior space, and cargo
| Measurement | 2026 Prelude |
|---|---|
| Wheelbase | 102.6 inches |
| Length | 178.4 inches |
| Width | 74.0 inches |
| Height | 53.4 inches |
| Front/rear track | 64.0 / 63.5 inches |
| Front/rear headroom | 37.2 / 33.1 inches |
| Front/rear legroom | 42.3 / 32.0 inches |
| Front/rear shoulder room | 57.1 / 53.2 inches |
| Front/rear hiproom | 54.2 / 48.7 inches |
| Passenger volume | 84.6 cubic feet |
| Cargo volume | 15.1 cubic feet |
| Curb weight | 3,261 pounds |
| Weight distribution | 63% front / 37% rear |
The Prelude’s 15.1-cubic-foot cargo figure is useful, but the number alone does not tell the whole story. This is a liftback, so the rear opening is more versatile than the trunk aperture of a traditional coupe. The rear seatback folds in a 60/40 split, allowing longer or bulkier items to be carried.
The rear seats are the main practicality compromise. With 32.0 inches of rear legroom and 33.1 inches of rear headroom, they are better suited to children, smaller adults, bags, or short journeys than to regularly carrying four full-size adults. Honda’s global description says the Japanese-market model can carry two medium-size suitcases and, with the rear seats folded, items such as golf bags or short surfboards. U.S.-market fit and cargo configurations should be confirmed before treating those examples as universal.
Honda lists a tire repair kit rather than a conventional spare tire. Buyers who regularly travel on rough roads should account for the inconvenience of a puncture and the replacement cost of large 19-inch tires.
Standard equipment and technology
Only two closely related U.S. configurations are offered, and the standard equipment list is generous. The base Prelude Hybrid includes:
- 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
- 9-inch color touchscreen.
- Google built-in.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Alexa Built-in.
- Bose premium audio system with eight speakers and a subwoofer.
- Wireless phone charger.
- Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
- Bluetooth HandsFreeLink.
- USB-C interface and charging port.
- HD Radio.
- HondaLink subscription services.
- Three years of unlimited data for in-vehicle Google apps, according to Honda’s trim comparison.
Google built-in and connected features may involve separate terms, data limits, or subscription requirements after included periods. Wireless smartphone integration is standard, but buyers should not assume that every connected service remains free indefinitely. Honda’s detailed equipment list is available through the Honda Information Center specifications and features-by-trim guide.
Safety equipment and crash-test status
The Prelude includes a broad standard safety package, including:
- Forward Collision Warning.
- Collision Mitigation Braking System.
- Road Departure Mitigation.
- Lane Departure Warning.
- Lane Keeping Assist.
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow.
- Traffic Sign Recognition.
- Traffic Jam Assist.
- Blind Spot Information.
- Rear Cross Traffic Monitor.
- Low-Speed Braking Control.
- Automatic high-beam headlights.
- Front and rear parking sensors.
- Rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.
- Post-Collision Braking.
- Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure.
- Front, knee, side, rear outboard side, and side-curtain airbags.
- LATCH child-seat anchors.
These systems are driver aids, not autonomous driving technology. They use cameras, radar, and other sensor inputs to provide alerts or, where applicable, steering and braking assistance; the driver remains responsible for controlling the car. Honda describes the equipment and limitations on its official Prelude page.

Does the 2026 Prelude have an NHTSA or IIHS rating?
As of August 9, 2026, a published NHTSA or IIHS crash-test rating was not available in the sources checked. The Prelude does not appear on NHTSA’s public 2026 model-year vehicles selected for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing list. That does not establish that the Prelude is unsafe; it means a buyer should not mistake its extensive equipment list for an independently published crash-test result.
Recommended buyer wording: The 2026 Prelude has extensive standard safety equipment, but a published NHTSA or IIHS crash-test rating was not available in the sources checked as of August 9, 2026. Verify the latest ratings before purchase.

Warranty, maintenance, reliability, and recalls
Warranty and maintenance coverage
Honda’s general U.S. coverage includes:
- 3-year/36,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty.
- 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty.
- 5-year, unlimited-mile corrosion limited warranty.
- Roadside assistance during the 3-year/36,000-mile limited-warranty period.
- Honda Service Pass for certain scheduled maintenance during the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, including an oil and filter change, tire rotation, and multipoint inspection.
Honda’s hybrid battery coverage is generally 8 years/100,000 miles, while California coverage may extend to 10 years/150,000 miles under applicable emissions requirements. Exact coverage can depend on state and emissions rules, so review the current warranty booklet and confirm the terms for the specific Prelude. Honda’s general warranty information is a useful starting point.
Honda’s specifications indicate no scheduled tune-ups until approximately 100,000 miles. That does not mean the Prelude requires no maintenance. Maintenance Minder intervals, fluid checks, tire service, brake inspections, filters, and normal wear items still apply.
Reliability and recall status
The Prelude is a new model, so long-term model-specific reliability data are limited. Consumer Reports says it lacks sufficient detailed reliability data and bases its prediction partly on the Civic Hybrid and Honda brand history. That is a prediction, not a substitute for years of owner and repair data.
Recall status is time-sensitive and can differ by production batch. Do not claim that the model has “no recalls” merely because a third-party database currently shows none. Before buying a new or used Prelude, run the vehicle identification number through the official NHTSA recall lookup and ask the dealer to confirm that all campaigns have been completed.

How the Prelude compares with alternatives
| If you want… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid efficiency and distinctive Honda coupe styling | Prelude | Two-door liftback body, 200-hp hybrid system, 44 mpg combined, adaptive dampers, and premium standard equipment. |
| More everyday practicality and a lower price | Honda Civic Hybrid | Similar hybrid technology with more usable rear-seat space and a more rational body style. |
| A manual transmission and traditional turbocharged enthusiast character | Honda Civic Si | More direct involvement and a lower-cost performance-oriented formula. |
| Maximum Honda performance | Honda Civic Type R | 315-hp turbocharged engine, six-speed manual, and a far more aggressive performance mission. |
| Rear-wheel drive and lightweight sports-car behavior | Subaru BRZ or Toyota GR86 | Lower weight, rear-drive balance, and manual-transmission availability. |
| Two-seat open-air sports-car driving | Mazda MX-5 Miata RF | Rear-wheel drive, removable roof panels, low weight, and manual availability. The 2026 RF Grand Touring starts at $38,450 before Mazda’s $1,235 destination charge; see Mazda’s pricing information. |
| More engine choices and rear-wheel drive | Ford Mustang | Greater straight-line performance potential and a broader range of powertrains, though current pricing should be rechecked. |
| Premium-compact alternatives | BMW 2 Series or Acura Integra | These enter the same general price conversation, but equipment, powertrain layout, maintenance, and transaction prices vary by configuration. |
Prelude versus Civic Hybrid
The Civic Hybrid is the rational choice for a buyer who wants similar hybrid efficiency, a lower purchase price, and more usable passenger space. The Prelude justifies its premium with a more special-looking body, adaptive dampers, Brembo front brakes, a sharper chassis, and greater exclusivity. In simple terms, the Civic Hybrid is the practical buy; the Prelude is the emotional buy.
Prelude versus Civic Si and Civic Type R
The Civic Si is the better fit for a buyer who prioritizes a manual transmission, turbocharged response, and traditional enthusiast involvement. The Civic Type R is in another performance category, with 315 hp, a six-speed manual, and track-oriented hardware. The Prelude is quieter, more efficient, and easier to operate in traffic, but it should not be described as a cheaper Type R.
Prelude versus BRZ, GR86, and Miata RF
The Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR86, and Mazda MX-5 Miata RF offer the mechanical qualities many sports-car buyers value most: rear-wheel drive, low weight, and available manual transmissions. The Prelude counters with four seats, hybrid fuel economy, a liftback, more long-distance comfort, and a larger range of standard technology. It is the more versatile daily driver, but not the purer sports car.
Prelude versus Mustang, BMW 2 Series, and Integra
A Mustang provides rear-wheel drive, more engine choices, and stronger straight-line performance in many configurations. The BMW 2 Series and Acura Integra are relevant because the Prelude’s destination-inclusive price reaches premium-compact territory. Compare the exact powertrain, equipment, warranty, maintenance costs, insurance, rear-seat room, fuel economy, and dealer price rather than comparing badge or base MSRP alone. Current rival pricing should be verified at the time of purchase.

Who should buy the 2026 Honda Prelude?
The Prelude makes sense for a buyer who wants an unusual combination of:
- Distinctive two-door styling.
- Hybrid efficiency without plugging in.
- A comfortable automatic daily driver.
- Four-seat flexibility for occasional passengers.
- Liftback utility instead of a conventional coupe trunk.
- Standard premium audio and connectivity.
- Strong cornering ability and a polished ride.
- Honda service availability and familiar ownership experience.
Who should skip it?
Look elsewhere if you expect:
- A clutch pedal or manual transmission.
- Rear-wheel drive.
- A lightweight sports car.
- Civic Type R acceleration.
- A high-revving naturally aspirated VTEC experience like older Preludes.
- Serious track performance.
- A purchase price in the low $30,000 range.
- Generous rear-seat space.
- A conventional spare tire.
2026 Honda Prelude verdict
The 2026 Honda Prelude is compelling because few cars combine a stylish two-door liftback, four-seat flexibility, hybrid efficiency, and serious chassis hardware in one package. Its 44-mpg combined rating and standard equipment make it easy to live with, while the dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, and dedicated steering calibration give it more cornering credibility than a normal Civic Hybrid.
The trade-offs are equally clear. The Prelude costs roughly $43,000 before taxes and registration, weighs 3,261 pounds, drives the front wheels, has no manual transmission, and delivers only moderate acceleration for its price. S+ Shift adds simulated gear changes and engine sound, but it does not create a conventional transmission or improve every performance test. The rear seats are occasional-use spaces, and the standard all-season tires should be distinguished from the optional summer tires used in some independent testing.
Buy the base Prelude Hybrid if you want the best balance of price and equipment. Select the $500 Two-Tone only for its black-roof appearance. The Prelude is worth considering as a distinctive, efficient sport-oriented grand tourer—but not if your definition of a Prelude requires rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox, high-revving naturally aspirated power, or Type R-level speed.

Is the 2026 Honda Prelude a hybrid?
Yes. Every U.S.-market 2026 Prelude uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and two-motor hybrid system producing 200 total system horsepower. It is front-wheel drive and does not require external charging.
How much does the 2026 Honda Prelude cost with destination?
The base Prelude Hybrid costs $42,000 before destination. Adding Honda’s $1,195 destination charge produces $43,195 before taxes, title, registration, dealer fees, accessories, and financing. The Two-Tone model costs $42,500 before destination, or $43,695 with destination.
Does the 2026 Prelude have a manual transmission?
No. The Prelude uses a direct-drive hybrid unit. Honda S+ Shift simulates an eight-speed transmission through software, engine-speed control, displayed shift events, and synthesized sound, but it does not provide a clutch pedal or conventional eight-speed gearbox.
Is the 2026 Honda Prelude a Civic Type R coupe?
No. It uses selected Type R-related chassis hardware and engineering concepts, including dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo front brakes. However, it does not use the Type R’s 315-hp turbocharged engine, six-speed manual transmission, or front-wheel-drive limited-slip differential package.
What is the 2026 Honda Prelude’s fuel economy?
Both U.S. configurations are rated at 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 44 mpg combined on regular unleaded fuel. With its 10.6-gallon tank, a simple theoretical calculation is about 466 miles, but actual range varies.
Does the 2026 Prelude have a crash-test rating?
As of August 9, 2026, a published NHTSA or IIHS rating was not available in the sources checked. Verify the latest results before purchase; standard Honda Sensing equipment should not be treated as a substitute for an independent crash-test rating.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2026 Honda Prelude is a 200-hp, 44-mpg hybrid liftback coupe with unusually sophisticated chassis hardware and strong everyday usability. Its $42,000 MSRP—or $43,195 including destination—buys exclusivity and polish, not Type R performance. The base Hybrid is the better value; the Two-Tone is an appearance upgrade. Choose the Prelude for style, efficiency, and balanced handling, and choose something else if you want a manual, rear-wheel drive, low weight, or maximum acceleration.
