Honda lists 200 horsepower, EPA fuel-economy ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway and 44 combined, and a starting U.S. MSRP of $42,000 for the Hybrid trim. Its unusual twist is S+ Shift: a simulated gearshift experience for a hybrid system without a conventional transmission or CVT.
Is the 2026 Honda Prelude a hybrid?
Yes. The 2026 Prelude pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle, direct-injection four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. Honda rates the combined system at 200 horsepower and the traction motor at 232 lb-ft of torque. The press kit lists the traction motor at 181 hp and the generator motor at 143 hp; those individual ratings should not be added together as if they were simultaneous system output. Honda’s 2026 Prelude press kit provides the powertrain details.
Honda says the Prelude’s hybrid system uses fixed-ratio drive, with engine power blended through a lock-up clutch. It has neither a traditional transmission nor a CVT. That distinction matters: despite the car’s paddle shifters and shift-like responses, it is not a conventional geared sports coupe.
What is Honda S+ Shift?
S+ Shift is Honda’s simulated gearshift feature. It coordinates engine speed with paddle-shifter inputs to create responses such as downshift blips, rev matching and holding a simulated gear. Honda’s stated aim is to add a more familiar performance-car rhythm to the hybrid powertrain; the feature does not add a traditional gearbox. How many miles per gallon does the 2026 Prelude get?
Honda’s U.S. specifications report EPA ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 44 mpg combined. These are ratings reported by Honda, not real-world results from an independent test; actual fuel economy varies with driving conditions and use. Honda’s current U.S. model page lists the model’s specifications.
How much does the 2026 Honda Prelude cost?
On Honda’s U.S. model page reviewed October 8, 2026, the listed starting MSRP is $42,000 for the Hybrid and $42,500 for the Hybrid Two-Tone. Honda notes that taxes, license, registration, destination, accessories, dealer variation and premium-color charges may apply, so those figures are not necessarily the price a buyer pays.

The figures differ from Honda’s dated launch announcement: on November 18, 2025, Honda described one well-equipped trim at $42,000 before a $1,195 destination charge, or $43,195 including destination. That launch pricing should not be combined with the current page’s trim prices without accounting for the different date and exclusions. Check the dealer’s inventory and final price for the specific car.
What makes it a sports coupe?
The Prelude has a two-door coupe profile with a hatchback design and seating for four. Honda emphasizes chassis hardware derived from the Civic Type R, including dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers and four-piston Brembo front calipers. These are manufacturer specifications and positioning, not evidence of how the car performs on the road; no independent road-test results are established here.

Honda lists Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual drive modes. The model page also highlights a 9-inch display, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bose audio, a wireless phone charger, 19-inch Berlina Black wheels and a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback. Check the current official specifications for equipment by configuration rather than assuming every listed feature is standard on both trims.
How does the Prelude fit into the nameplate’s history?
Honda describes this as the Prelude’s sixth generation. The previous five-generation run continued through model year 2001, making the 2026 car a return after a long gap rather than a continuous model-line update. Honda’s press kit covers the nameplate and the new car.

What should buyers compare before choosing one?
Honda’s own comparison material places the Prelude alongside the Toyota GR86 and Mazda MX-5 Miata RF. That is Honda’s promotional framing, not an independent finding that the cars are interchangeable. Buyers should compare the specific priorities that matter to them: purchase price, drivetrain and transmission layout, EPA efficiency, independently measured performance, passenger and cargo usefulness, and the kind of driving experience they want.
For example, an AP-syndicated Edmunds comparison describes the GR86 as rear-wheel drive with an available manual transmission, a fundamentally different setup from the Prelude’s hybrid system and simulated shifts. Confirm current rival specifications with their manufacturers before making a detailed side-by-side comparison; those specifications are not established here.
