The 2026 Honda Pilot is the clearer choice if you want a gasoline V6, eight seats on most trims, and Honda’s refreshed cabin technology. The 2026 Toyota Highlander gives shoppers a choice of gas or hybrid power and AWD across its lineup; seating can reach eight on select grades with an optional bench. The better family hauler depends on your powertrain, seat layout, and cargo needs—not a single maximum-space figure.
This comparison covers U.S. 2026 models using manufacturer-published information available October 4, 2026. Trim equipment and prices can change, and neither vehicle was independently driven or tested for this comparison.
At a glance: Pilot vs. Highlander
| What matters | 2026 Honda Pilot | 2026 Toyota Highlander |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | 3.5-liter V6, 285 hp and 262 lb-ft; 10-speed automatic | Gas or hybrid powertrains; Toyota’s direct comparison lists 265 hp, but that figure does not describe every hybrid configuration |
| Drivetrain | FWD on Sport and EX-L; AWD standard on the other listed trims | AWD standard across the lineup |
| Seating | Eight on Sport, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition; seven on TrailSport | Up to seven standard; optional second-row bench allows up to eight on XLE and Limited |
| EPA fuel economy | Honda lists 20–22 mpg combined, depending on trim and drivetrain | Check the EPA label for the exact gas or hybrid grade; a complete comparable rating table was not available in the captured official material |
| Starting-price context | Sport announced at $42,195 before $1,495 destination and handling | Toyota announced gas XLE at $45,270 and hybrid XLE at $47,020, excluding dealer processing and handling; its live listing showed $46,270 starting MSRP when accessed October 4, 2026 |
Manufacturer specifications provide a useful starting point, but price and equipment comparisons should use the exact grades, seating layouts, and fees you can buy locally.
Which one suits your family?
Choose the Pilot if you want V6 power and a straightforward eight-seat option
Every listed 2026 Pilot trim uses the same 3.5-liter V6, rated at 285 hp and 262 lb-ft, with a 10-speed automatic. The Sport and EX-L are available with front-wheel drive; AWD is standard on Touring, TrailSport, Elite, and Black Edition. Honda lists towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds for 2WD and 5,000 pounds for AWD.

Most Pilot trims are listed with eight seats. TrailSport is the exception, with seven. If you need a particular number of usable seats, check the exact trim and confirm its second-row arrangement rather than assuming every Pilot has the same layout.
Choose the Highlander if hybrid power is central to your decision
Toyota offers the 2026 Highlander with gas or hybrid powertrains and makes AWD standard across the lineup. That gives buyers a choice the Pilot’s listed V6 range does not. Toyota’s model-year materials describe seating for up to seven, with an optional second-row bench that raises capacity to eight on XLE and Limited grades.

Do not use a single horsepower figure to compare the Highlander’s gas and hybrid choices: Toyota’s direct comparison lists 265 hp, but that is not a complete specification for every hybrid configuration. Check the exact grade’s current specifications and EPA label.
Seating and cargo: check the row you will actually use
Seat count is not the same as family fit
Both vehicles can be configured for up to eight, but not on every grade. The Pilot TrailSport is seven-passenger; the Highlander’s optional eight-seat layout is limited to XLE and Limited in Toyota’s model-year description. Before choosing, check whether the second-row bench or other available layout works with your child seats and passenger needs.

Third-row cargo space matters more than a maximum figure
Honda lists 18.6 cubic feet behind the Pilot’s third row and 48.5 cubic feet behind the second row as standard figures. Honda’s head-to-head page gives a maximum cargo capacity of 111.8 cubic feet, while its specification page shows trim-dependent maximums up to 113.7 cubic feet. Those figures refer to different configurations; maximum capacity is not the space available with all three rows in use.
The official Toyota material captured for this comparison did not provide a full trim-by-trim cargo table. Honda’s comparison page describes the Highlander’s maximum as “at least” a stated amount, but that manufacturer-authored comparison is not a row-by-row independent measurement. If you regularly travel with all three rows occupied, compare current specification tables and bring your usual luggage to a dealer to check the usable space behind the third row.

Fuel economy and operating cost
Pilot EPA ratings vary by drivetrain and trim
Honda publishes these EPA city/highway/combined ratings for the 2026 Pilot: Sport and EX-L 2WD, 19/27/22 mpg; Sport and EX-L AWD, 19/25/21 mpg; most other AWD trims, 19/25/21 mpg; and TrailSport AWD, 18/23/20 mpg. Honda specifies regular unleaded fuel. These are EPA ratings reported by Honda, not real-world results.
Compare Highlander grades using their own EPA labels
The Highlander’s gas and hybrid options can have different fuel costs, but the captured official material does not establish a complete set of comparable EPA ratings. Use the rating for the specific grade you are considering, then estimate fuel spending using your annual mileage, local fuel prices, and expected ownership period. Without those inputs, a hybrid’s purchase-price premium cannot be judged from the model name alone.

Price: compare equivalent grades and the total transaction
Honda announced a $42,195 starting MSRP for the Pilot Sport before its $1,495 destination and handling charge. The announcement lists Sport AWD at $44,295 and Black Edition at $54,995, both before destination. Toyota’s model-year announcement gives starting MSRPs of $45,270 for gas XLE and $47,020 for hybrid XLE, excluding dealer processing and handling. Toyota’s live 2026 listing showed a $46,270 starting MSRP when accessed October 4, 2026, a different figure and source context. Check Toyota’s current configurator and local inventory for the exact grade and fees rather than treating those amounts as one definitive base price.
The announced Pilot Sport FWD price is lower than Toyota’s announced gas XLE starting price, but that compares different trim levels and does not establish which SUV costs less with equivalent equipment. Local discounts, taxes, registration, financing, trade-in value, and dealer fees can change the final deal.
Technology and driver assistance
Pilot updates for 2026
Honda says the refreshed Pilot adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Google built-in, and 5G Wi-Fi capability. Honda also describes a quieter cabin and improved steering feel; those comfort and handling claims are manufacturer statements rather than comparative test results.
Honda lists Honda Sensing features including collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, blind-spot information, and cross-traffic monitor. Equipment can vary by trim, so confirm the feature list for the vehicle you are buying.

Verify the exact grade’s equipment before comparing screens or assistance features with a Pilot.
Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- Set the seating requirement. Identify whether you need seven seats or eight, then confirm the exact trim and second-row layout for both SUVs.
- Decide whether hybrid power is a priority. If it is, compare Highlander hybrid grades against the Pilot using each vehicle’s exact EPA rating and your expected mileage.
- Check cargo with all rows in use. Use third-row-up measurements where available and test your family’s luggage in person; do not substitute a maximum-capacity number.
- Compare like-for-like quotes. Match drivetrain, seats, and equipment, then include destination or processing charges and the dealer’s actual transaction terms.
- Verify the vehicle on the lot. Confirm current feature availability, EPA label, seating configuration, and price for the specific VIN and region.
