The 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport pairs a five-seat, two-row cabin and V6-powered all-wheel drive with factory trail equipment that suits gravel roads, beach access and moderate trails. MotorTrend’s first drive found it composed on pavement and capable on its route, but its 8.3 inches of unladen ground clearance and long wheelbase call for caution over large obstacles. It is not a rock crawler.
What makes the Passport TrailSport an off-road trim?
Every 2026 Passport has a 3,471 cc V6, a 10-speed automatic and Honda’s second-generation i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system. Honda rates the V6 at 285 horsepower. TrailSport adds hardware intended to improve traction and protect the vehicle on rougher surfaces:
- Off-road-tuned suspension
- An underbody skid plate
- Front and rear recovery hooks
- 275/60R18 all-terrain tires, according to Honda’s specifications
Honda lists seven drive modes: Normal, Econ, Sport, Snow, Tow, Trail and Sand. As Honda puts it, “Seven versatile drive modes allow you to toggle your Passport between Normal, ECON, Sport, Snow, Trail, Sand, and Tow modes while seeing each mode’s distinct icon on the 10.2-inch Digital Instrument Cluster.” See Honda’s 2026 Passport model page and specifications.
How capable is it on a trail?
In MotorTrend’s first drive, the TrailSport Elite climbed gravel grades measured at 30 degrees, crossed a sandy Puerto Rican beach and negotiated uneven terrain where wheels lifted. MotorTrend also reported that Trail and Sand modes adjust traction behavior, and that hill descent control can be set from 2 to 12 mph. Those are observations from that review’s route, not results from an independent test by CarCody.

Honda lists 8.3 inches of unladen ground clearance for every trim and approach and departure angles of 23.0 and 23.1 degrees for TrailSport. The manufacturer lists a 5,000-pound towing capacity; towing suitability depends on proper equipment and conditions. These figures describe a useful trail-capable crossover, not a guarantee that it can clear every obstacle or tow every load.
Where its limits matter
MotorTrend cautioned that the redesigned Passport’s longer wheelbase and only modest clearance gain over the previous model may raise the chance of underbody contact. The review describes steel protection for the oil pan, transmission and fuel tank, but careful line choice and low speed remain important on uneven ground. Clearance and wheelbase make large rocks, abrupt ledges and deeply rutted routes less forgiving than gravel or sand.

MotorTrend identified its test vehicle’s tires as 31-inch General Grabber A/T Sport tires. Honda’s official TrailSport listing specifies 275/60R18 all-terrain tires; do not assume the review’s named tire is fitted to every build. Check the exact tire on the vehicle being considered.
Is it comfortable and practical as a daily driver?
MotorTrend said the suspension delivered comfort and body control in routine suburban driving during its first drive. That is a reported driving impression, not a measured ride-comfort result. Honda lists 40.9 inches of second-row legroom and 44.0 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row—useful dimensions for passengers and everyday gear. Those measurements do not, by themselves, establish how comfortable the seats will feel to a particular driver or passenger.

TrailSport and TrailSport Elite are EPA-rated at 18 mpg city, 23 highway and 20 combined, using regular unleaded gasoline, according to Honda’s 2026 specifications. The fuel tank holds 18.5 gallons. Actual fuel economy varies with driving, conditions and load.
TrailSport or TrailSport Elite?
Both trims share the TrailSport’s core capability equipment. The Elite is chiefly a comfort and visibility upgrade, with extra features that may matter on long commutes as much as on slow trails.

Honda’s trim feature guide lists equipment by model. Choose TrailSport if the shared trail hardware is the priority; consider Elite if its cameras, seating and cabin additions justify the price difference for your use. Confirm current MSRP, equipment and incentives with Honda or a dealer before buying.

Compare the actual vehicles and the trails you plan to drive rather than assuming one category is automatically superior. The Passport offers all-terrain tires, recovery points and underbody protection, but its 8.3-inch unladen clearance and long wheelbase are relevant when routes have large obstacles or abrupt changes in grade. Consider:

Honda lists a full-size spare tire kit and other vehicle-specific accessories. Accessories are purchased through participating local dealers; Honda describes a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty for accessories installed at vehicle purchase. Honda’s May 11, 2026 announcement says its Partnered Accessories program begins with Thule recreation and overlanding products, including bike attachments and roof boxes, sold through Honda dealers with fitment and installation support.
