The record-style figure belongs to a new single-motor, rear-wheel-drive EV with a 122.496-kWh battery—not the quicker three-motor model launching first in Europe.
Europe’s initial Z9 GT is officially rated at 600 km WLTP. It produces 850 kW, reaches 100 km/h in a claimed 2.7 seconds, and combines luxury-car equipment with estate-car practicality. The 1,036-km claim is therefore significant, but it must be read as a China-specific test-cycle result rather than a universal real-world or U.S. EPA range figure.
The headline range is real as a CLTC claim, but it is not the range every buyer will see
Denza launched a refreshed Z9 GT in China on March 5, 2026, with a maximum claimed range of 1,036 km, or about 644 miles, on China’s CLTC test cycle. That figure applies to a new single-motor, rear-wheel-drive electric version using a 122.496-kWh battery. Denza and BYD describe it as the world’s longest-range pure electric car, although that description needs the important CLTC qualification.
The European launch car is a different proposition. The initial three-motor all-wheel-drive Z9 GT is officially rated at 600 km WLTP, not 1,036 km. BYD says the longer-range rear-wheel-drive EV will follow in Europe later in 2026. There is no established U.S. EPA rating, U.S. launch, or U.S. dealer availability for the Z9 GT at the time of the 2026 launch announcements.

In other words, the Z9 GT is a large, powerful electric shooting brake with an extraordinary Chinese-market test-cycle number, rapid-charging technology, and a high level of standard equipment. It should not yet be described as a 644-mile real-world EV or a 644-mile EPA-rated car.
What Denza unveiled in China
Denza is BYD’s premium new-energy vehicle brand. The updated Z9 GT range introduced in China contains five variants and was reported at 269,800 to 369,800 yuan, equivalent to approximately US$39,100 to US$53,600 at the exchange rates used in the launch coverage. Actual prices outside China cannot be inferred from those figures because taxes, equipment, distribution costs, incentives, and local pricing are different.
The most significant addition is the single-motor rear-wheel-drive EV. Chinese launch coverage gives it 370 kW, or 496 hp, and up to 1,036 km of CLTC range with the larger battery. A 102.326-kWh battery option is reported with an 820-km CLTC rating. The range figures are configuration-specific: the high-performance three-motor car is not the 1,036-km version.
2024 Z9 GT versus the refreshed 2026 car
The 2026 car should not be confused with the original Z9 GT, which entered Chinese sales on September 20, 2024. The earlier model was offered as both a battery-electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid.

The large jump from 630 km to 1,036 km is therefore not simply a minor software update to the 2024 car. It reflects a refreshed model, a larger battery option, a different rear-wheel-drive configuration, and a test-cycle comparison that is particularly favorable to the Chinese CLTC system.
How meaningful is 1,036 km of range?
CLTC, or China’s Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, generally produces more optimistic range results than the U.S. EPA and European WLTP procedures. It is useful for comparing Chinese-market vehicles tested under the same system, but it should not be converted directly into an EPA or real-world promise.
One third-party estimate cited in launch coverage suggested that the 122.5-kWh version might correspond to approximately 451 miles under a rough CLTC-to-EPA comparison. That is an approximation, not an EPA certification or an independent road test. Weather, speed, wheel choice, temperature, passenger load, heating or air conditioning, and battery state of charge can all change the result.
The safest interpretation is:
- 1,036 km: Denza’s maximum Chinese CLTC claim for the long-range, single-motor rear-wheel-drive EV.
- 820 km: Reported CLTC claim for the smaller 102.326-kWh battery option.
- 600 km: Official European WLTP rating for the initial three-motor electric version.
- Approximately 451 miles: A rough third-party CLTC-to-EPA estimate, not an official U.S. figure.
That distinction matters because a reader shopping in Europe will initially encounter a 600-km WLTP Z9 GT, while a reader looking at Chinese launch headlines will see the 1,036-km CLTC number.

European range and powertrain specifications
BYD’s European specification lists the initial electric Z9 GT with three motors, all-wheel drive, 850 kW or 1,156 PS, and 1,210 Nm of torque. The motor arrangement comprises one 230-kW front motor and two 310-kW rear motors. Denza claims 0-to-100-km/h acceleration in 2.7 seconds and a 270-km/h top speed.
The European plug-in-hybrid, identified as the DM version, combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with three electric motors. Its published system output is 570 kW or 776 PS, with 1,035 Nm of system torque. The claimed 0-to-100-km/h time is 3.6 seconds and the top speed is 260 km/h. BYD lists 203 km of electric range and 805 km of combined WLTP range for the European DM model.

Those figures position the European EV closer to a performance grand tourer than an efficiency-focused long-range commuter. The later rear-wheel-drive European car is expected to improve range, but its final European rating, equipment, price, and arrival timing should be confirmed in the relevant national market.
Battery and charging: impressive claims with important conditions
The refreshed Z9 GT uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, based on lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry, with cell-to-body construction. The battery is integrated into the vehicle structure rather than treated solely as a separate pack, a design intended to support packaging and structural efficiency.
Denza’s Flash Charging system is the source of the most striking charging claims. Launch material reports that the car can add a useful amount of range in five minutes and achieve a full charge in roughly nine minutes under suitable high-power conditions. These are manufacturer or launch-report figures; no independent charging test was identified for this article.
The European specification lists:
- 11-kW maximum AC charging.
- DC charging through Denza’s Flash Charging system.
- One year of Flash Charging included as standard in the stated European offer.
- An additional six months, for up to 18 months in total, for qualifying orders placed before the end of September under the reported time-limited promotion.
The promotion’s deadline and eligibility are commercial details that can change and should be rechecked before ordering. More importantly, the headline charging time depends on a compatible high-power charger, the correct electrical conditions, battery temperature, battery state of charge, and local infrastructure. A household AC wallbox or an ordinary public DC charger will not reproduce a nine-minute full-charge result.
For ownership planning, a local charging map can help buyers find EV charging stations, but the presence of a DC charger does not by itself prove that it supports Denza Flash Charging. Connector standards, voltage, amperage, network access, and market-specific charging hardware all need to be confirmed.
Large shooting-brake practicality
The Z9 GT is a five-door shooting brake, or estate-style grand tourer, rather than a conventional sedan or SUV. The official European EV dimensions are:

The combination of a 53-litre front trunk, a folding rear seat, and a 2,000-kg towing rating gives the Z9 GT more practical breadth than its acceleration figures might suggest. It is still nearly 5.2 metres long and almost two metres wide, so tight urban parking and narrow garages may be more significant ownership concerns than its claimed turning radius implies.
Chassis and handling technology
The European specification includes double-wishbone front suspension, five-link rear suspension, BYD’s DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, and carbon-ceramic disc brakes. These are substantial hardware claims for a luxury performance estate, but they are not substitutes for independent ride, braking, handling, or towing tests.
The three-motor EV also includes active rear steering. Denza highlights several low-speed and maneuvering functions:
- Crab Walk: a lateral-movement function enabled by coordinated steering and motor control.
- Compass Turn: a maneuver that Denza says can rotate the vehicle within its own footprint.
- e3 Parking Assist: an automated parking system intended to reduce the difficulty of placing the large car in tight spaces.
Denza claims Compass Turn can improve parking efficiency by up to 65 percent. That percentage is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result. The functions may also vary by market, software version, road surface, and local regulations.

The Z9 GT is positioned as a premium technology-focused grand tourer. Highlighted cabin equipment includes leather seats with massage, ventilation, extended leg rests, and active side support. A combined cooling-and-heating compartment, digital side mirrors, and a 20-speaker Devialet audio system are also part of the advertised equipment. BYD’s European press material specifies a 1,150-watt audio system with Dolby Atmos support.
Chinese launch coverage describes a revised steering wheel, a column-mounted shifter, a three-screen dashboard layout, dynamic ambient lighting, a Lava Red interior option, and carbon-fiber trim. The refreshed exterior receives a revised front fascia, new wheels, concealed door handles, updated rear lighting, and a sportier rear spoiler. An updated LiDAR sensor is reported for driver-assistance functions.
Equipment can differ between Chinese and European cars. Buyers should therefore treat the Chinese launch list as context, not as a guarantee that every feature will appear on a European or later-market vehicle.
Safety and driver assistance
Denza’s European model information describes automatic braking integrated with its driver-assistance systems, low-adhesion surface stabilization, and high-speed blowout stability up to 180 km/h. These descriptions explain the technology Denza says is fitted; they do not constitute an independent safety rating.

No independent Euro NCAP, NHTSA, or IIHS crash rating for the refreshed Z9 GT was identified in the available research. That is an important omission for buyers comparing the car with established European or American premium models.
Chinese launch coverage says the refreshed car adopts BYD’s God’s Eye 5.0 driver-assistance system, with functions including automatic emergency steering and Navigate on Autopilot for city and highway use. Such names should not be interpreted as autonomous driving. Feature availability and behavior depend on the market, software release, road markings, weather, driver supervision, and local homologation. Launch coverage often places the Z9 GT against premium grand tourers and performance estates from Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. That comparison is understandable because the Denza combines luxury equipment, extreme acceleration, long-distance range claims, advanced chassis systems, and a high price positioning.
It is not, however, proof that the Z9 GT matches those brands in ride tuning, cabin finish, software reliability, dealer coverage, parts supply, resale value, or long-term ownership support. Those areas require market-specific reviews and ownership data. The Denza’s most defensible differentiators at launch are its claimed range under CLTC, three-motor output, Flash Charging architecture, rear-steering maneuverability, and unusually generous standard technology.

That makes the Z9 GT an important electric-car launch, but not simply because it claims 644 miles. The more complete story is a premium, very large electric grand tourer whose range, charging speed, technology, and availability all depend heavily on the exact version and country.
