Short answer: Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, and Buick are among the strongest 2026 reliability starting points, but the best choice depends on the evidence you need. J.D. Power measures reported problems in three-year-old vehicles, Consumer Reports predicts reliability for newer models and separately ranks older used cars, while iSeeCars focuses on long-term durability and reaching 200,000 miles.

The strongest overall 2026 reliability names are Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, and Buick—but there is no single ranking that answers every reliability question. J.D. Power places Lexus first for three-year dependability, followed by Buick and MINI. Consumer Reports identifies Subaru, Lexus, and Toyota as its leading new-car reliability brands. iSeeCars takes a longer-term, high-mileage view and finds different model-level leaders by category.

J.D. Power reports results as problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. Lower is better. PP100 is not a failure rate or a percentage of cars that broke down: one vehicle can generate more than one reported problem.

*J.D. Power’s Tesla result is unofficial because Tesla does not meet the study’s award criteria. The published brand list and scores are also reproduced in this Cars.com summary of the 2026 study.

What the J.D. Power results mean

  • Lexus is the overall leader. It ranks highest among premium brands for the fourth consecutive year, at 151 PP100.
  • Buick leads mass-market brands. Its 160 PP100 score puts it second overall and makes it the highest-ranked mass-market brand for the second straight year.
  • The industry average is 204 PP100. Brands below that figure reported fewer problems than the study average; brands above it reported more.
  • The result describes 2023 vehicles after three years. It does not directly rank every vehicle sold as a 2026 model, and it cannot establish that every model from a high-ranked brand is dependable.

J.D. Power’s strongest individual models

The Lexus IS is the top overall model in the 2026 study. Toyota Motor Corporation receives the most model-level awards, including the Lexus IS, Lexus UX, Lexus GX, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota 4Runner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Segment leaders include the Toyota Corolla among compact cars, Lexus IS among compact premium cars, Toyota Camry among midsize cars, Chevrolet Equinox among compact SUVs, Lexus GX among midsize premium SUVs, Toyota Sienna among minivans, and Toyota Tacoma among midsize pickups. A model-level award is more useful than a brand average when you are choosing between specific vehicles, but it is still a population-level result rather than a guarantee for an individual car.

The biggest problem area is infotainment

J.D. Power says infotainment remains the most problematic category in the 2026 study. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity is the leading individual problem, with wireless charging, Bluetooth, and automaker-app connectivity also contributing substantially.

This matters because a vehicle can be mechanically sound yet receive a poor dependability result after owners report repeated software, connectivity, screen, or convenience-feature issues. If your definition of reliability means only engine and transmission durability, PP100 should not be read as a pure mechanical-failure ranking.

Consumer Reports 2026 reliability rankings

Consumer Reports answers a different question: How reliable is a newer vehicle likely to be, based on recent model history and owner reports? Its 2026 new-car reliability results identify Subaru, Lexus, and Toyota as the leading brands. Honda, Nissan, Acura, Kia, and BMW are also included among the stronger group, with BMW identified as the highest-ranked European brand in the 2026 results. See the Consumer Reports 2026 automotive brand research for its broader analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CR’s predicted reliability is based on trouble areas reported by owners and generally requires at least two years of survey data, often from the 2023, 2024, 2025, or early 2026 model years. A substantially redesigned vehicle has less history to support a prediction, even if the outgoing version had an excellent record. CR explains this limitation in its discussion of reliability histories and new-model predictions.

Do not confuse CR’s report card with a reliability-only ranking

Consumer Reports’ broader 2026 Automotive Report Card combines predicted reliability with road-test performance, owner satisfaction, and safety. It is therefore a measure of overall vehicle quality, not a pure reliability league table. A brand may be strong on reliability but rank differently overall because it performs differently in testing, safety, satisfaction, or other categories. The distinction is important when comparing a CR overall brand score with the J.D. Power PP100 list.

Consumer Reports used-car reliability

For older vehicles, CR evaluates five- to 10-year-old cars. Lexus and Toyota lead its 26-brand used-car reliability ranking. Ram, Jeep, and Tesla occupy positions 24, 25, and 26, respectively, in that analysis. This is valuable evidence for a used-car shopper, but it should not be presented as a direct forecast for every 2026 model because the underlying vehicles are older model years, including vehicles from approximately 2016 through 2021.

For a used car, the model year, engine, transmission, maintenance record, recall history, accident history, and present condition can matter more than the brand’s position. A carefully maintained lower-ranked model can be a better purchase than a neglected example from a highly ranked brand.

Because iSeeCars organizes results by body style and powertrain, it is best used to build a shortlist within the kind of vehicle you actually want—not to name one universal winner.

Category Selected leader Reliability Rating
Small cars Volkswagen Golf 9.0/10
Luxury small cars Lexus IS 350 and Lexus IS 300 8.7/10
Midsize cars Toyota Camry 7.6/10
Sports cars Mazda MX-5 Miata 8.8/10
Hybrid crossovers Toyota Highlander Hybrid 8.2/10
Hybrid small SUVs Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Approximately 7.7–7.8/10, depending on configuration
Minivans Honda Odyssey 7.5/10
Electric cars Tesla Model S 7.9/10
Plug-in hybrids Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid 7.0/10

These are category results, not claims that the Volkswagen Golf or Tesla Model S is the most reliable vehicle of every type. They also illustrate why model-level and category-level research can produce a different shopping list from a brand ranking.

Why the 2026 reliability studies disagree

1. They measure different vehicle ages

J.D. Power measures 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Consumer Reports’ new-car ranking predicts reliability from recent model history, while its used-car ranking looks at vehicles that are roughly five to 10 years old. iSeeCars uses a long-run vehicle-history and longevity approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A model can have a strong early ownership record but a weaker high-mileage record, or the reverse. The answer also changes when a manufacturer redesigns a vehicle.

2. They define a problem differently

J.D. Power counts owner-reported problems across nine categories and expresses the result as PP100. Consumer Reports asks owners about trouble areas and converts those responses into a predicted reliability assessment. iSeeCars emphasizes durability and the likelihood of reaching high mileage.

Those measures should not be averaged into an invented master ranking. A vehicle that has many annoying connectivity complaints but few mechanical failures can look different in J.D. Power than in a longevity study.

3. Redesigns weaken historical predictions

A well-established nameplate does not automatically make a newly redesigned vehicle a safe reliability bet. New engines, transmissions, electronics, battery systems, software, and chassis components can introduce problems that older versions never had. Consumer Reports specifically warns that significantly redesigned vehicles have less predictive history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When considering a 2026 vehicle, check whether it is a carryover, a modest update, or a full redesign. If the architecture is new, place more emphasis on available model-specific evidence, warranty terms, recalls, technical-service information from a qualified source, and a realistic willingness to accept early-production risk.

4. Technology is now part of dependability

Modern reliability scores include more than engines and gearboxes. Infotainment, smartphone pairing, charging pads, Bluetooth, driver-assistance systems, cameras, sensors, and manufacturer apps can all affect an owner’s experience. J.D. Power’s 2026 findings make that especially clear.

Before buying, test the features you will use every day. Pair your phone, try wired and wireless connections, test the backup camera and driver-assistance alerts, verify charging behavior, and check whether software updates are available. A vehicle that is otherwise dependable may still be a poor fit if its technology repeatedly frustrates you.

5. Powertrain categories do not tell the whole story

In the 2026 J.D. Power study, average reported problem counts were higher for electrified powertrains than for gas vehicles: PHEVs recorded 281 PP100, battery-electric vehicles 237, hybrids 213, and gas vehicles 198.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That finding does not prove that every EV, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid is unreliable. It is a category average, and model-level performance varies widely. The appropriate conclusion is to compare the specific vehicle and powertrain, not to reject an entire technology based on one average. iSeeCars’ category results, including the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Tesla Model S, and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, likewise show why powertrain-specific shortlists are more useful than blanket claims.

How to use the rankings when buying a 2026 vehicle

If you are buying new

  1. Start with the exact model and powertrain. Use Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, and Buick as broad starting points, but do not stop at the brand level.
  2. Check recent model history. A nameplate with several years of consistent data is generally easier to evaluate than a substantially redesigned vehicle.
  3. Separate reliability from quality. If you are using Consumer Reports, confirm whether you are reading predicted reliability or its broader report-card score.
  4. Research recalls and software campaigns. Reliability problems can involve electronics and software as well as mechanical components.
  5. Test the technology. Verify phone integration, navigation, charging, cameras, sensors, and driver-assistance features before signing.
  6. Compare the ownership plan. Review scheduled maintenance, warranty coverage, battery coverage where applicable, service availability, and the cost of routine parts.

If you are buying used

  1. Research the exact model year. Avoid relying on a brand average when a particular engine, transmission, or generation has a different record.
  2. Verify the VIN and recalls. Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup to identify unrepaired safety recalls. NHTSA says recall repairs are generally performed free by the manufacturer, although the buyer should confirm completion with the dealer or manufacturer.
  3. Obtain the vehicle’s history. A vehicle history report can help reveal title problems, odometer discrepancies, reported accidents, prior damage, and other history that a brand ranking cannot show. It does not replace a physical inspection or guarantee that the report contains every event.
  4. Review maintenance records. Look for evidence of regular oil or fluid service, manufacturer-recommended maintenance, tire replacement, brake work, and repairs appropriate to the vehicle’s age and mileage. A car maintenance logbook can help an owner organize future service records, but it is not proof that past work was completed.
  5. Scan for diagnostic codes—but do not stop there. An OBD2 scanner for used-car checks may reveal stored or pending trouble codes and help identify areas for further investigation. Sellers can clear codes, some faults may not set a code, and a scan cannot assess overall mechanical condition.
  6. Arrange an independent inspection. A pre-purchase vehicle inspection can assess leaks, structural damage, suspension, brakes, tires, fluids, cold-start behavior, underbody condition, and signs of poor repairs. It is one of the most important safeguards when buying a used car.
  7. Account for the car’s actual condition. Service history, climate, road salt, towing, commercial use, modifications, accident repairs, and neglected maintenance can overwhelm the statistical advantage of a highly ranked brand.

A practical reliability shortlist by buyer type

Buyer priority Good research starting point What to verify next
Lowest broad brand-level problem signal Lexus, Buick, Subaru, Toyota Exact model, model year, powertrain, and technology history.
New-car predicted reliability Subaru, Lexus, Toyota; also consider Honda, Nissan, Acura, Kia, and BMW Whether the vehicle is redesigned and how much recent survey history exists.
Used-car brand reliability Lexus and Toyota VIN history, maintenance, recalls, inspection, and model-year-specific issues.
Long-term midsize sedan durability Toyota Camry Trim, powertrain, service history, and condition.
Long-term hybrid crossover durability Toyota Highlander Hybrid Battery-system coverage, service records, and the individual vehicle’s condition.
Reliable sports-car candidate Mazda MX-5 Miata Track use, modifications, accident damage, and maintenance.
Minivan durability candidate Honda Odyssey Transmission and maintenance history, mileage, and inspection findings.

What these rankings cannot tell you

  • They cannot guarantee that a particular car will be trouble-free.
  • They cannot identify undisclosed accident damage, flood damage, odometer fraud, or neglected maintenance.
  • They cannot tell you whether a specific used vehicle has been driven gently, towed heavily, modified, or exposed to severe weather.
  • They cannot make a new-generation vehicle as predictable as a mature model with years of evidence.
  • They cannot tell you whether the vehicle’s technology, ride, cargo space, fuel cost, charging access, or service network fits your needs.

Reliability rankings are best understood as probability tools. They improve the odds of choosing a sound vehicle, but they do not replace model-year research and inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most reliable car brand in 2026?

J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in its 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, with 151 problems per 100 vehicles. Buick is second at 160 PP100, followed by MINI at 168. The study measures 2023-model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, so it is not a direct ranking of every new 2026 model.

Does a J.D. Power PP100 score represent a failure rate?

No. J.D. Power’s PP100 figure counts reported problems per 100 vehicles, and one vehicle can have multiple problems. It includes issues such as infotainment and smartphone-connectivity problems, not only breakdowns or major mechanical failures.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are electric cars and hybrids less reliable in 2026?

The 2026 J.D. Power averages were 198 PP100 for gas vehicles, 213 for hybrids, 237 for battery-electric vehicles, and 281 for plug-in hybrids. These are category averages, not proof that every EV or hybrid is unreliable. Compare the specific model, powertrain, and model year.

How should I use reliability rankings when buying a used car?

For used cars, begin with the exact model year and powertrain rather than the brand ranking. Check the VIN for unrepaired recalls, review the vehicle history and maintenance records, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. A diagnostic scan can supplement—but cannot replace—the inspection.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, or Buick for strong broad signals, but choose at the model-and-powertrain level. For a new 2026 vehicle, prioritize recent predicted-reliability history and redesign risk. For a used vehicle, the VIN, maintenance records, independent inspection, and actual condition matter more than the brand’s position alone.
