The 2026 BMW i3 is a new all-electric sedan in the Neue Klasse generation, positioned within the BMW 3 Series family—not the earlier compact i3 hatchback. BMW says series production began in Munich in August 2026. Its German-market range claims reach up to 912 km (567 miles) WLTP for the i3 50 xDrive and 710 km (441 miles) WLTP for the i3 40 xDrive; BMW’s US page gives a separate preliminary estimate of 446–468 miles for the 50 xDrive. US deliveries are expected to begin in early 2027, and the US material examined does not state an MSRP.
What is the 2026 BMW i3?
This i3 is BMW’s second Neue Klasse model: a fully electric sedan that shares the new 3 Series family’s design and digital concepts, but has a battery-electric drivetrain. It is distinct from the earlier small i3 hatchback, and it is not simply an electric version of an unchanged gasoline 3 Series. BMW’s October 2026 model overview treats the electric i3 and combustion-engine 3 Series derivatives separately.
BMW has highlighted the Panoramic iDrive display and control system, the Heart of Joy driving-dynamics system, sixth-generation eDrive and 800-volt technology. Series production began at BMW’s Munich plant in August 2026, following the company’s March announcement of its plans for the model.
2026 BMW i3 specs and range
The versions and figures below come from BMW’s October 2026 German overview and technical data. WLTP figures are test-cycle results, not guaranteed distance in everyday driving.

BMW Germany’s technical data page lists an 82.8 kWh battery and 420 litres of luggage capacity for the 40 xDrive. The figures should not be mixed across versions or equipment configurations: range can vary with configuration, and BMW cautions that load, driving style, route, weather, auxiliary equipment, tires and battery age affect actual range.
US range and charging figures are a different measure
For the US-market 2027 i3 50 xDrive, BMW currently lists 446–468 miles of range, 463 hp, 476 lb-ft of torque and maximum 400 kW DC charging. BMW labels the range a preliminary manufacturer estimate based on EPA testing procedures; it says recently launched model-year EVs may not yet be fully EPA certified. Treat it as a preliminary estimate, not an EPA-certified result or a promise of road range.

BMW’s US page says a 10–80% charge takes 21 minutes. It also estimates that ten minutes at a 400 kW charging station can add 191–208 miles under an ideal maximum-rate assumption. Charging performance depends on the station, battery state and temperature, equipment and driving conditions. BMW lists NACS charging and a multifunction charging cable as standard on the described US 2027 50 xDrive equipment.
2026 BMW i3 price
United States
The BMW USA material examined describes reservations but does not publish an MSRP for the i3. BMW says the dealer determines the actual price and that making a reservation does not guarantee a set price. The page also notes that taxes, title, transport, options and dealer fees are excluded from MSRP, so buyers should confirm the complete transaction price with a participating dealer.

Germany
BMW Germany’s page, marked 09/2026, shows a €599-per-month commercial lease example for the i3 40 xDrive, not a general consumer purchase price. The example lists an acquisition price of €45,609.33, no lease down payment, 10,000 km annual mileage, a 36-month term and an additional €1,000 transport and registration package. It is for self-employed and commercial customers, adds applicable VAT where required, requires comprehensive insurance, and is valid through 31 December 2026 for registration by 31 December 2027.

BMW says Munich series production began in August 2026 and that order books opened ahead of schedule in mid-June. Availability and delivery timing depend on market: BMW USA currently expects US deliveries to begin in early 2027. BMW’s earlier March announcement described autumn 2026 deliveries generally; that should not be read as the US delivery schedule.

BMW USA describes an early-order reservation requiring a $1,000 deposit paid to a participating dealer through Stripe. BMW says the deposit is refundable by contacting the dealer, but a reservation does not lock the price. Delivery timing depends on configuration and production schedule. These reservation terms are US-specific.

What the range and performance figures mean for buyers
- Keep test cycles separate: the German page’s WLTP range and the US page’s preliminary EPA-procedure estimate are different measures and should not be compared as if they were the same test result.
- Check the exact configuration: BMW’s German technical page says the 40 xDrive range varies by configuration. Do not assume the maximum range applies to every wheel or equipment setup.
- Plan around charging access: the short-stop figures are BMW claims under specified fast-charging conditions, not guaranteed additions on every trip. Home charging is a separate consideration; BMW’s German technical information references AC charging and its Wallbox Professional, but does not establish that a wallbox is included.
- Compare drivetrains by use case: against a combustion 3 Series, the useful considerations are battery-electric versus combustion powertrain, charging access, regional energy or fuel costs and the chosen configuration. Shared design and digital concepts do not make the cars mechanically equivalent.
