The 2026 Ram 3500 leads the one-ton pickups in this comparison with a manufacturer-rated maximum of 36,610 pounds. Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD and GMC Sierra 3500 HD tie at 36,000 pounds. Ford’s F-350 is configuration-specific: one published crew-cab 4×2 fifth-wheel/gooseneck figure is 35,700 pounds. These are maximums for particular builds and towing methods—not ratings that apply to every truck wearing the same badge.
2026 1-ton trucks ranked by maximum towing capacity
This ranking compares the highest relevant manufacturer-published maximum for each nameplate. The figures are not a like-for-like trim comparison or an independent test. Hitch type and the exact truck configuration matter, so the qualifying details belong with each number.
| Rank | Truck | Published maximum | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ram 3500 | 36,610 lb | Ram’s 2026 maximum with the available High-Output 6.7L Cummins diesel; consult the official chart for the exact configuration and hitch method. |
| T-2 | Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD | 36,000 lb | Maximum gooseneck rating for a specifically equipped 2026 2WD regular-cab, long-bed DRW diesel with the Max Trailering Package. |
| T-2 | GMC Sierra 3500 HD | 36,000 lb | Maximum advertised on GMC’s 2026 model page; GMC separately lists lower maximum fifth-wheel/gooseneck figures for Denali trims. |
| 4 | Ford F-350 Super Duty | 35,700 lb | Ford’s 2026 technical table lists this for an F-350 crew-cab 4×2 in a fifth-wheel/gooseneck configuration. Use the exact applicable table row when comparing a specific truck. |

What each maximum means in practice
1. Ram 3500: 36,610 pounds
Ram’s 2026 headline maximum requires the available High-Output 6.7L Cummins diesel. It is not a blanket rating for every Ram 3500; cab, bed, drive, axle, rear-wheel configuration, equipment and hitch method can affect the applicable rating. Use Ram’s 2026 towing information and chart to identify the figure for the specific build.

- Molded to fit Factory Mirrors
- Extension does not interfere with OE Mirror Glass
- Mirrors can be folded Without removing extensions
T-2. Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD: 36,000 pounds
Chevrolet’s 2026 maximum is a gooseneck rating for a specific work-oriented configuration: regular cab, long bed, 2WD, dual rear wheels, Duramax diesel and Max Trailering Package. It should not be presented as the rating for all Silverado 3500 HD trucks, or as a conventional-hitch rating. Chevrolet’s model information and trailering chart distinguish ratings by configuration and hitch.
T-2. GMC Sierra 3500 HD: 36,000 pounds
GMC advertises a 36,000-pound maximum for the 2026 Sierra 3500 HD. Trim choice can narrow the comparison: GMC lists maximum available fifth-wheel/gooseneck ratings of 30,800 pounds for Denali and 30,700 pounds for Denali Ultimate. Check the GMC model and trim information against the truck you are considering.

4. Ford F-350 Super Duty: 35,700 pounds in a specified configuration
Ford’s 2026 Super Duty headline numbers cover more than the F-350, including F-450 configurations, so they cannot be substituted for an F-350 rating. Ford’s technical table gives 35,700 pounds for an F-350 crew-cab 4×2 in the relevant fifth-wheel/gooseneck configuration. F-350 ratings vary with cab, drive, engine, axle and hitch method. Ford says, “Towing capability will vary based on trim series, option content and payload.” Check the 2026 Ford towing guide and F-350 table for the exact row.
Why the highest number may not fit your truck or trailer
A manufacturer’s maximum trailer rating describes a qualifying configuration and towing method. It does not establish what a different cab, drivetrain, trim, axle, package or hitch can tow. Nor does it mean the truck can safely carry the loaded trailer’s hitch weight just because the trailer is below the advertised maximum.

- Hitch method: Conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings can differ. Compare the rating for the hitch your trailer actually uses.
- Truck configuration: Cab, bed, 2WD or 4WD, SRW or DRW, engine, axle ratio and package can change the rating. A maximum may belong to a regular-cab 2WD work truck rather than the crew-cab 4WD trim you want.
- Payload and hitch load: Passengers, cargo and trailer tongue or kingpin weight count against the truck’s available payload and weight limits. A trailer can be within the maximum trailer rating while its pin or tongue load pushes the truck over a limit.
- Vehicle and combination limits: The truck must also remain within its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) and gross combined weight rating (GCWR).
How to check a specific truck before towing
- Identify the exact truck. Record model year, cab, bed, drive, SRW/DRW, engine, axle and installed towing packages.
- Find the matching manufacturer-guide row. Use the applicable year’s official chart and select the hitch method and configuration that match the truck. Do not use a brand-wide headline or another model’s figure.
- Read the truck’s certification labels. Check its actual payload and the applicable GVWR and GAWR limits; the maximum rating for a different build does not replace these labels.
- Use the trailer’s loaded figures. Compare its loaded weight and expected tongue or kingpin load—not just its empty or advertised weight—with the truck’s ratings and available payload.
- Check the combined limit. Account for the loaded truck and trailer together against GCWR, and confirm that the hitch and any prep package fit the truck’s year, bed and configuration.
Ram notes that trailer weight and payload ratings are mutually exclusive and that vehicle ratings must not be exceeded. Ford likewise directs buyers to account for passengers, cargo and tongue or kingpin load. The vehicle’s labels and the matching manufacturer chart are essential checks, not optional fine print.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one-ton truck should you choose?
If the sole criterion is the highest published maximum in this 2026 comparison, the Ram 3500 leads. Chevrolet and GMC tie on their advertised line maximums, while the cited Ford F-350 figure is tied to a specific crew-cab 4×2 fifth-wheel/gooseneck configuration. For a purchase decision, compare the exact truck and hitch you can buy with the loaded trailer and its pin or tongue weight. The highest headline number alone cannot settle whether a particular build is the right match.
