Verdict: The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a genuinely useful three-row electric minivan with standout retro design, a smooth ride and strong available all-wheel-drive acceleration. Its drawbacks are a high price, roughly 231–234 miles of EPA range and a cramped luggage area when all three rows are occupied. It is worth considering if passenger space and character matter more to you than maximum road-trip range.
What the 2025 ID. Buzz is
The ID. Buzz is Volkswagen’s long-wheelbase electric minivan for the U.S. market. It uses the visual language of the classic Microbus, but it is a modern battery-electric family vehicle rather than a new version of the old van. The practical differences show up in its configurable six- or seven-seat cabin, driver-assistance technology and electric powertrain.

The styling is the emotional hook, while the low-floor, three-row layout is the reason to buy it as transportation. Families get easy access to a spacious passenger compartment, but the space available for luggage changes substantially when every seat is occupied.

How far can the ID. Buzz go on a charge?
Officially, the 2025 rear-drive 1st Edition is rated at 234 miles, while the AWD model is rated at 231 miles. Volkswagen’s technical data also lists 90 city, 75 highway and 83 combined MPGe, with energy consumption of 37 kWh per 100 miles.

- Highly-detailed die-cast precision model for collectible or play
- Detailed die-cast precision model
Those numbers are estimates, not a guarantee for every trip. Volkswagen says driving style, weather, temperature, battery age, payload and vehicle condition can change the result. Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway testing produced 180 miles for the RWD model and 190 miles for AWD, illustrating why sustained high-speed travel requires more planning than the EPA figure suggests.
Charging and route planning
Car and Driver reports a claimed 10–80 percent DC fast-charge time of about 30 minutes. That is a useful stop for a family road trip, but the relatively short highway range means charging stops may arrive sooner than they do in longer-range electric crossovers. Plan routes around compatible high-power stations and leave a buffer for cold weather, headwinds, roof loads and full passenger loads.

Six or seven seats—and what happens to the luggage
Seating flexibility
The U.S. configuration seats seven with a second-row bench. Available captain’s chairs reduce capacity to six and create a pass-through between the individual seats. Car and Driver also notes that massaging front seats are standard, while the Canadian Volkswagen listing describes flexible seating and a panoramic roof. Canadian-page equipment should not be assumed to be identical to every U.S. trim.

Cargo with all rows in use
The ID. Buzz is genuinely a three-row minivan, but the rearmost cargo area is the key compromise. Tom’s Guide found the trunk tight when the third row was in use. The cited reviews do not provide a single U.S.-specific cargo-volume number for that configuration, so buyers carrying strollers, multiple suitcases or sports equipment should inspect the actual space with their seats in place.

Fold the seats and the Canadian Volkswagen specification lists 4,120 litres of maximum cargo volume. That figure describes the seats-folded configuration, not the amount available behind seven passengers.
Performance and driving impressions
Rear-wheel drive produces 282 hp and reached 60 mph in 6.7 seconds in Car and Driver’s testing. The 335-hp AWD model cut that time to 5.5 seconds, giving the large van surprisingly strong acceleration for merging and passing.

The ride is comfortable and composed, and the power delivery is smooth. Car and Driver reported some highway noise and an inconsistent brake-pedal feel. Those observations matter more in a family vehicle than a headline acceleration time: the Buzz feels relaxed most of the time, but it is not completely isolated or perfectly polished at the controls.

Tom’s Guide specifically praised the adaptive cruise control and the captain’s-chair layout during a week-long test. Its reviewer, John Velasco, wrote: “That’s because the ID.Buzz is unlike any other electric vehicle on the market, and in my week’s worth of testing, I cannot tell you how much of a deep impression it has made across multiple generations.”

Tom’s Guide listed a $59,995 base MSRP and $67,995 for the Pro S Plus 4MOTION vehicle it tested in a review published May 17, 2025. Treat those figures as a dated market snapshot: trim availability, destination charges, incentives and transaction prices can change, so verify current pricing before ordering.

| Pro S Plus 4MOTION test vehicle | $67,995 | Tom’s Guide test vehicle price, same review |
The price positions the ID. Buzz as a premium family EV. Its value comes from the combination of three-row practicality, distinctive design and a rich cabin experience—not from class-leading range or the lowest entry cost.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense for buyers who:
- Need genuine three-row passenger seating in an electric vehicle.
- Want a distinctive, conversation-starting design instead of a conventional crossover shape.
- Prefer a soft, comfortable ride and effortless acceleration.
- Can charge at home or plan public charging stops around a roughly 231–234-mile EPA rating.
- Usually carry people rather than a full load of luggage behind the third row.
Consider another vehicle if you:
- Regularly drive long highway distances and want the fewest charging stops.
- Need substantial luggage capacity with all seats occupied.
- Want the lowest possible purchase price among three-row family vehicles.
- Expect completely quiet highway manners or a perfectly consistent brake pedal.
How to compare the ID. Buzz with other family EVs
Use the same checklist for every candidate rather than comparing styling or EPA range alone:
- Usable highway range: compare independent 70–75-mph results, not only laboratory estimates.
- Charging and route planning: check the 10–80 percent charge time, station availability on your routes and the vehicle’s connector and network support.
- Seating flexibility: confirm bench versus captain’s-chair layouts and whether the configuration meets your passenger count.
- Cargo with every row occupied: bring your stroller, luggage or equipment to a dealer and test it physically.
- Performance: consider merging and passing response as well as ride comfort.
- Price and equipment: compare like-for-like trims, included driver assistance and seat features.
- Driver assistance: verify which functions are standard in the exact market and trim you are buying.
- Styling and brand appeal: assign a value to the design if it is the reason this van stands out to you.
Final verdict
The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz succeeds as an unusually spacious, characterful electric family vehicle. Its three-row flexibility, comfortable ride and available AWD performance are compelling, but its limited highway range and small behind-the-third-row luggage area prevent it from being the all-purpose road-trip champion. Choose it for the cabin and the personality; choose something else if maximum range, cargo volume with seven people aboard or lowest price comes first.
