The refreshed 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is quick enough to catch you underestimating it, yet calm enough in everyday driving to feel almost unhurried. In Jonathan M. Gitlin’s first drive for Ars Technica, the all-wheel-drive hatchback proved more entertaining on track than he expected, with its rear differential helping it turn. His take comes from less than four hours behind the wheel—not a long-term test or instrumented comparison.
What changed for the 2025 Golf R?
Gitlin describes the U.S.-market 2025 Golf R as a midlife refresh rather than a wholesale redesign. The changes mix updated styling and cabin equipment with small weight-saving measures.

How does the Golf R drive on the road and track?
On public roads
Gitlin reports that the adaptive-damper car rode comfortably over rough patches, even in Nürburgring mode. In Comfort mode, its acceleration was easy to underestimate: the car gathered speed without making a dramatic show of it. He found the standard head-up display useful for keeping track of speed.

On track, Gitlin found the Golf R engaging and praised its brakes. He credits the rear differential with helping the car turn through corners, while noting that the adaptive dampers remained adequately compliant over rough sections. These are his driving impressions, not measured performance results.
What does the all-wheel-drive system contribute?
Ars Technica reports that the 4Motion system has a 50:50 front-to-rear torque split, with a clutch-based rear differential able to direct available rear-axle torque to an individual wheel. Gitlin associates that rear-wheel torque control with the car’s cornering behavior on track. The report does not offer an instrumented comparison with another all-wheel-drive car or the front-wheel-drive Golf GTI.

The Euro Style choice is a preference trade: lower weight and a different exhaust and seat material in exchange for some comfort and convenience equipment. The article does not establish that it is faster or better for every driver.

What is the main cabin drawback?
Gitlin accidentally triggered the R mode button and heated steering wheel with the touch-sensitive steering-wheel controls. That is a usability complaint from his drive, rather than a claim that every driver will have the same experience.

Gitlin sums up the short drive this way: “All told, my seat time behind the wheel was probably less than four hours, but that was more than enough to remind me that I need to stop underrating the Golf R.” The account supports a first-drive impression of a composed road car that becomes involving on track; it does not establish long-term reliability, fuel economy, safety ratings, current transaction prices or a measured advantage over rivals.
