1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 2025 Volvo EX90 is best understood as the fully electric counterpart to the family-sized XC90—not a direct replacement. It offers a similar large-SUV role, while the XC90 remains available as a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The EX90’s biggest caveat is software and computing maturity: Volvo has documented ongoing fixes and says every model-year 2025 EX90 is eligible for a free computer upgrade, but the work requires a workshop visit. An independent Consumer Reports road test also reported software problems on its test vehicle; that experience is not a measure of how often problems occur across the fleet.
Is the Volvo EX90 the same as the Volvo XC90?
No. The EX90 is fully electric, while the XC90 is not a fully electric SUV: Volvo offers it with mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains. Volvo describes the vehicles as similarly sized, making the EX90 a close match for the XC90’s large family-SUV role, but they serve drivers with different fueling needs. Volvo’s EX90 information and its XC90 comparison explain the distinction.
“Spiritual successor” is a useful description of the EX90’s place in Volvo’s lineup, not an official designation and not a claim that the XC90 has been discontinued. Whether the EX90 is the better fit depends on charging access, seating and cargo requirements, and the exact vehicle’s model year and software status.
What needs work on the 2025 EX90?
Software maturity and computing hardware
Volvo’s update history shows that the EX90’s software has continued to change. Its release notes record interface and feature changes as well as fixes involving app connectivity, navigation display, rear-camera cleaning behavior, saved seat positions, CarPlay reconnection, GPS behavior, app performance, and general stability. This establishes that Volvo has made continuing software changes; it does not show that every reported problem is resolved on every vehicle or how common any issue is. Volvo’s EX90 software release notes provide the dated update details, with availability varying by vehicle and market.

Independent test experience
In its road test of a 2025 EX90, Consumer Reports said its test vehicle needed numerous software updates and upgrades and that technicians used hard and soft resets to address multiple problems. That is a specific test experience, not a fleet-wide reliability statistic or evidence that every owner will encounter the same issues.
What the free 2025 EX90 computer upgrade includes
As of Volvo’s US support page update on September 10, 2026, every model-year 2025 EX90 is eligible for a complimentary upgrade to a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin computer. Volvo says the new hardware improves computing performance, reduces battery consumption while parked, and enables features that had been delayed. The work requires an appointment at a Volvo workshop and takes approximately one day, according to Volvo; contact a local retailer for scheduling and timing details. Volvo’s 2025 EX90 support information describes the upgrade.

The upgrade matters because Volvo says software requiring the dual Orin hardware cannot be installed on the original computer. A vehicle can continue using its original computer, but Volvo says it will not receive future updates and features that require dual Orin. The newer software is delivered with the hardware upgrade rather than being compatible with the older computer.
Volvo says the upgraded vehicles will receive features including Park Pilot Assist, time-interval support in Pilot Assist, Connected Safety, Emergency Stop Assist with a safety call, in-vehicle voice amplification, and manual battery preconditioning. Market availability may differ, and Volvo lists some of these as arriving after the upgrade—not as features already installed on every 2025 EX90. The company also says the update addresses known issues, including automatic exterior-mirror folding.

How the 2025 EX90 differs from the 2026 model
Do not apply 2026 specifications or charging claims to a 2025 EX90 without checking the exact vehicle. Volvo announced an 800-volt electric system for the 2026 model, along with a dual Orin-based computer rated by Volvo at 500 TOPS, expanded driver-support features, and an electrochromic panoramic roof. The 2025 computer upgrade is a separate workshop retrofit; it does not turn a 2025 vehicle into the 2026 model or establish that it has the 2026 model’s electrical architecture.
Volvo’s 2026 announcement reports up to 250 km of range added in 10 minutes in a test using a 350 kW charging facility. This is a conditional manufacturer-reported result, not a universal owner outcome or a 2025 EX90 specification; charging times vary with temperature and battery and vehicle condition. Volvo’s 2026 EX90 announcement gives the model-year and test context.

Range figures also need a precise match. Volvo’s current US specifications page presents current configurations and EPA-estimated figures, with qualifications for wheels, conditions, and configuration; those figures do not establish 2025 ratings. Use the range rating for the exact 2025 market, configuration, and wheel size rather than assuming a current-model figure applies. Volvo’s US EX90 specifications show current-model information.

| What to compare | EX90 | XC90 |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Fully electric. Confirm the exact vehicle’s model year and configuration. | Available as a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid; it is not fully electric. |
| Energy and fueling needs | Consider home charging access, local public fast-charging coverage, and installation requirements. | Consider the needs of the specific mild-hybrid or plug-in-hybrid version. |
| Software and model-year status | For a 2025 vehicle, confirm whether the complimentary workshop computer upgrade is complete. | Check equipment by model year and trim. Volvo’s comparison page covers revisions with labels spanning 2025.5 and later; newer equipment should not be assumed on every 2025 XC90. |
| Range or driving needs | Use the range estimate for the exact model year, market, configuration, and wheels. | Compare the relevant powertrain and vehicle specifications for the exact version. |
| Seating and cargo | Verify seating configuration and cargo capacity for the particular trim and market. | Verify seating configuration and cargo capacity for the particular trim and market. |
Volvo’s current XC90 comparison describes updates including a larger 11.2-inch infotainment display and interior and ride changes, but its model-year labels span 2025.5 through later versions. Treat those as model-year-specific changes, not standard equipment across all 2025 XC90s. Check Volvo’s XC90 comparison for the applicable version.
What to check before buying or owning a 2025 EX90
- Confirm the model year and market. Make sure the vehicle is a 2025 EX90 and consult the specifications that apply in its market.
- Ask whether the dual Orin computer upgrade is complete. If not, ask a Volvo retailer about arranging the complimentary workshop upgrade and its timing.
- Check the vehicle’s current software status. Review the installed version and available updates with the retailer; release availability can vary by market and vehicle.
- Plan charging around your circumstances. Assess home-charger installation feasibility and local public charging before choosing a fully electric SUV. Volvo Canada points owners to home charging and identifies Qmerit for professional installation, while also naming ChargePoint in its charging information; verify local requirements, compatibility, installation rules, and partner availability. Volvo Canada’s charging information provides that market-specific context.
- Match range claims to the exact vehicle. Confirm model year, configuration, market, and wheel size before comparing estimates or planning trips.
Why software changes matter beyond the EX90
Volvo’s broader software-upgrade plans help explain the company’s software-defined-car approach, but they should not be mistaken for proof that all updates have completed or that every Volvo receives the same features. In a 2025 announcement, Volvo said around 2.5 million customers worldwide with eligible Google-built-in Volvos—including cars built as early as 2020—were expected to receive an infotainment upgrade during 2025. That was a planned reach estimate, not a confirmed installation count. The announcement quoted Erik Severinson, Volvo Cars’ chief product and strategy officer, describing the new-generation user experience as an important step toward human-centric technology.
