The redesigned U.S.-market 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan is a more polished, better-equipped two-row compact SUV, with composed road manners and a roomier-feeling cabin. But its 201-hp engine delivers only adequate acceleration, and the redesign drops the previous model’s optional third row. It may be the most balanced Tiguan yet for buyers who want five-seat everyday practicality—not for families who need occasional seven-seat capacity.
What changed for 2025?
Volkswagen redesigned the U.S. Tiguan as a five-seat, two-row compact SUV. The previous model’s optional third row is gone, so the new layout prioritizes second-row passengers and cargo instead. MotorTrend reports that the 2025 model uses the MQB Evo platform and weighs about 170 pounds less than the 2024 Tiguan. MotorTrend’s May 16, 2025 first drive covers the U.S.-market vehicle; Tiguans sold in other regions can differ in engines and body configurations.
Engine, transmission, and drive layout
The U.S. Tiguan’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 201 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on most configurations; 4Motion all-wheel drive is optional, while the SEL R-Line gets 4Motion standard, according to MotorTrend.
Fuel economy depends on configuration
MotorTrend lists 2025 Tiguan fuel-economy ranges of 22–26 mpg city, 30–34 mpg highway, and 25–29 mpg combined across trims and drivetrains. Those are configuration-dependent ranges, not a single rating for every Tiguan. For its tested SEL R-Line 4Motion, Car and Driver lists EPA estimates of 22 mpg city, 30 highway, and 25 combined.

How does it drive?
In MotorTrend’s first drive on Montana roads, the SEL R-Line stayed composed through sweeping curves and absorbed rough pavement without rattling the cabin. The reviewer noted some expected body roll in tighter turns. The cabin was quiet on the highway, though MotorTrend says the sound-insulating windshield is limited to the top trim.
Acceleration is less convincing than the chassis and ride. MotorTrend found the engine adequate for the vehicle but wanted smoother throttle response and quicker downshifts when more power was requested. In a separate instrumented test, Car and Driver recorded 8.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in an SEL R-Line 4Motion and described the turbo four as insufficiently responsive from a stop. That is a result for that tested trim and drivetrain, not a measurement of every 2025 Tiguan.

Is the cabin better for everyday use?
MotorTrend reports a substantial improvement in cabin materials and technology. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Most trims have a 12.9-inch central touchscreen; the SEL R-Line gets a 15-inch display.

The shifter has moved to the steering column, freeing space in the center console for storage and larger cupholders. MotorTrend’s reviewer found rear-seat legroom and cargo room generous, and the second row folds in a 60/40 split. The main ergonomic caveat is that temperature adjustments still use touch sliders, although a conventional volume knob remains.
How much room does it offer, and who should skip it?
Car and Driver lists 27 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 59 cubic feet with the second row folded for its reviewed 2025 Tiguan. With five seats and no third-row option, the redesign is better suited to buyers who use the second row and cargo area regularly than to households that occasionally need two extra seats.

If a third row is essential, the 2025 Tiguan does not meet that need. If not, the two-row layout gives the vehicle a straightforward compact-SUV role: carry passengers in two rows, with the flexibility to fold the rear seats for larger loads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the 2025 Tiguan feel balanced?
“Most balanced” is a judgment, not a measured ranking. The evidence makes a reasonable case for the phrase if balance means a combination of a more polished cabin, useful standard technology, composed handling, and a comfortable ride. The trade-offs are also clear: acceleration is modest, throttle and downshift response could be better, temperature controls rely on touch sliders, and there is no third row.

MotorTrend’s May 2025 first-drive article gave a base-price range of $30,920–$41,180 for the 2025 model at that time. Those are historical figures from that article, not current prices. Volkswagen’s current U.S. Tiguan builder reflects the present lineup and cautions that prices and specifications can change; it does not establish 2025 pricing.
