The U.S.-market 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a cabin-focused refresh, not a powertrain upgrade. It keeps its 241-hp turbocharged engine and front-wheel drive, but the manual is gone: every 2025 GTI sold in the United States uses a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. The larger infotainment screen and restored steering-wheel buttons make daily interaction easier, while the car remains an engaging, practical hot hatch. The trade-off is straightforward: better controls, but no manual option.
What changed for 2025?
Volkswagen’s mid-cycle refresh gives the GTI a 12.9-inch central infotainment display with revised software. Reviewers found the updated interface quicker and easier to use than the previous system. Physical buttons return to the steering wheel, addressing a notable usability complaint. The touch sliders remain, but Edmunds reports that they are now backlit. The car also gets refreshed lighting and exterior details, new wheel designs, and trim-specific cabin and equipment changes. The Drive’s review and Edmunds’ 2025 GTI review describe the changes.
There is no corresponding power increase. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four remains rated at 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels. For the U.S. 2025 model, the seven-speed DSG is the only transmission. The 2024 GTI 380 was the final manual-equipped GTI in this model-year sequence, according to Car and Driver.
How does the GTI drive?
Car and Driver describes the GTI as playful on back roads, crediting its compact size, quick steering and dependable brakes. Edmunds likewise characterizes it as approachable and entertaining. In the Autobahn trim, summer tires and a torque-vectoring front differential help the car corner sharply. These qualities make the GTI feel lively without requiring a specialist driver to enjoy it.

There are limits. Car and Driver found steering feedback mediocre and reported body roll on track, even with the adaptive dampers set to their stiffest mode. Edmunds noted understeer near the limit. Those observations describe the reviewers’ experiences, not a guarantee of how the car will behave on every road, tire or driving day.

Car and Driver tested a 2025 GTI Autobahn weighing 3,293 pounds, equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 19-inch Hankook summer tires. Its instrumented results were:

Is the cabin more usable?
The revised screen and steering-wheel buttons are the refresh’s most consequential everyday changes. The faster, updated interface makes common interactions less cumbersome, and physical wheel controls restore tactile inputs for key functions. The illuminated touch sliders are easier to locate than unlit ones, though they remain touch-sensitive rather than conventional buttons.

Practicality is still a GTI strength. Car and Driver found the hatchback’s rear seat adult-friendly and its cargo capacity favorable compared with small SUVs. Cabin materials and some equipment vary by trim: for example, the SE offers ArtVelours synthetic-suede seating as trim equipment. Check the specific car’s window sticker for its exact standard and optional features.

Trim choice is not just a matter of upholstery or screen size: tire and damper specifications affect the character of the car. The tested Autobahn’s adaptive dampers and summer tires are not evidence that every trim has the same setup. Consult the equipment listing for the exact vehicle you are considering.

What is the verdict?
The 2025 GTI remains a quick, engaging and useful hatchback, and its refreshed interface addresses a real daily-use weakness. The unchanged engine and measured Autobahn performance preserve the familiar formula, but the deletion of the manual is a meaningful loss for drivers who want to choose their own gears. Car and Driver’s August 6, 2025 updated review summed up that tension: “Despite missing a core ingredient, the GTI remains a great hot hatch.”
