Those are meaningful updates to the formula; first-drive impressions suggest they sharpen rather than transform the Taos.
What changed for the 2025 Volkswagen Taos?
Volkswagen’s U.S. 2025 model information lists the 1.5-liter turbo engine at 174 horsepower, up from 158 hp, and specifies an eight-speed automatic with available 4MOTION AWD. The engine’s torque remains 184 lb-ft, according to The Drive’s first-drive report.
- More power: output rises by 16 hp; torque is reported unchanged at 184 lb-ft.
- A different transmission lineup: every 2025 U.S. Taos uses an eight-speed automatic. The Drive and MotorTrend report that AWD models move away from the earlier seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Revised exterior details: the grille and lighting treatments are updated.
- Cabin revisions: the refresh brings technology and trim updates, though the cited launch coverage does not establish a comprehensive feature list for every trim.
Volkswagen’s model page now includes information for newer model years, so its 2025-labeled performance material is the relevant reference for the output change.
How does the 2025 Taos drive?
The Drive’s first-drive event took place around San Antonio, Texas. Its reviewer described the drive as relatively short and judged that the extra horsepower did not change the Taos’s basic character as an entry-level commuter crossover. That is one publication’s launch-era impression, not an instrumented comparison or a conclusion about every driving condition.

MotorTrend also covered the added power, styling and feature changes, as well as the AWD transmission revision. Its account, like The Drive’s, is a first-drive review rather than long-term ownership evidence. The available coverage supports calling the refresh a targeted update; it does not establish how the Taos will hold up over years of use.
FWD or 4MOTION AWD: what is the practical difference?
The main decision is whether you need the additional traction of AWD or prefer the FWD version’s reported fuel-economy advantage. The Drive reports these U.S. EPA estimates for the 2025 Taos:

Does the refresh change the Taos’s value proposition?
The updates address two tangible parts of the package: engine output increases, and AWD gets the same eight-speed automatic used with FWD. The revised lighting and grille, plus cabin technology and trim changes, refresh the presentation without replacing the Taos’s established compact-crossover concept.
Whether those changes make the Taos the right choice depends on the details of the version available near you. Compare drivetrain needs, current EPA-label figures and the equipment on the specific trim rather than assuming every 2025 Taos has identical features. First-drive coverage can describe launch impressions, but it cannot answer long-term reliability, repair-cost or ownership-cost questions.
