But that was a controlled ice-track outing on tungsten-studded tires, not proof that the Golf R is ready for winter roads on its standard tires. Volkswagen Canada lists summer-performance tires and says appropriate cold-weather tires are required in winter.
What MotorTrend found on the ice
For its March 12, 2025 report, MotorTrend drove the updated European Golf R on a frozen lake in Sweden, fitted with tungsten-studded tires. The writer described the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system as making slides predictable and intuitive, with the car’s angle responding to accelerator input. That suggests the system can help an experienced driver adjust the car’s attitude on a controlled surface; it is not a measurement of braking distance, everyday snow traction, or performance on ordinary tires. MotorTrend also said the conditions did not allow a comprehensive assessment of the European car.
MotorTrend’s separate U.S.-version first drive likewise described predictable power distribution from 4Motion and composure on track, including a segment with Volkswagen driver Tanner Foust. Those are drive impressions, not a winter-road test.
U.S. 2025 Golf R specifications
For a U.S. buyer, the Volkswagen of America order guide is the relevant specification source. It lists the Golf R and Golf R Black Edition with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, seven-speed DSG automatic, and R-Performance 4Motion all-wheel drive with torque vectoring.

Market figures should not be mixed. MotorTrend’s European ice-drive story gives 310 lb-ft, while the U.S. order guide specifies 295 lb-ft. Volkswagen’s European announcement lists 333 PS (245 kW) and 420 Nm; those are European-market figures and units, not the U.S. car’s rating. The European story also notes that the six-speed manual is gone there in favor of the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Winter tires are the essential qualification
Volkswagen Canada’s 2025 Golf R buyer’s guide lists 235/35 R19 summer-performance tires and states: “The vehicle is sold equipped with four summer performance tires and requires appropriate cold weather tires in the winter.” All-wheel drive can help the car put power down, but it does not turn summer tires into winter tires or establish safe braking and cornering on snow or ice.

If you are choosing winter tires for the Golf R, confirm the correct size and fitment for your specific car, wheels, and market rather than assuming the listed 235/35 R19 size applies to every configuration. A winter wheel-and-tire package can make seasonal changes more convenient, but its fit still needs to be checked against the vehicle.
What the first drive says about daily use
In its U.S. first-drive account, MotorTrend treated the hatchback body as practical for everyday use and noted the large touchscreen, updated infotainment pathways, and configurable digital instruments. The reviewer wanted more hard buttons, however, and criticized some paddle-shifter materials. The same review praised the car’s composure over a rough section of track. These are the publication’s impressions from its drive, not a long-term ownership assessment.

MotorTrend’s European report also records the manual’s disappearance and gives its own opinion that the previous manual’s clutch and shifter were not highlights. That is the outlet’s evaluation, not an objective finding that applies to every driver.

MotorTrend’s European ice-drive story listed U.S. starting prices of $48,325 for the Golf R and $49,640 for the Black Edition at the time of publication. Those are dated review figures, not current transaction prices or a quote for a particular buyer.

It supports a limited conclusion: the Golf R’s AWD system was reported to be adjustable and predictable on a studded frozen course, while its winter-road suitability still depends on using appropriate cold-weather tires.
