The 2025 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX is a conventional hybrid that pairs a turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. Toyota rates it at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, with an EPA-estimated maximum of 24 MPG combined. That makes it a higher-output Tacoma with a modest efficiency proposition—not proof that the truck’s fuel-economy tradeoff disappears or that the hybrid’s price premium pays for itself.
What the Tacoma i-FORCE MAX hybrid system is
Toyota describes the i-FORCE MAX as a turbocharged gasoline engine combined with an electric motor for added power. It is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. Toyota pairs the system with an eight-speed automatic transmission and says it produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The hybrid Tacoma also includes a 2400W onboard AC inverter as standard equipment, according to Toyota’s 2025 Tacoma model page.
Toyota’s December 17, 2024 announcement gives the system’s maximum output and an EPA-estimated maximum of 24 MPG combined. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not a promise that every trim or driving condition will achieve the maximum.

Is the hybrid more fuel-efficient than a gas Tacoma?
It may be, but Toyota’s headline figures do not support a simple comparison of the hybrid’s combined maximum with the gas model’s maximum. Toyota advertises up to 24 MPG combined for the hybrid, while its gas Tacoma “up to 26 MPG” figure is a highway maximum. Combined and highway ratings measure different things, so comparing 24 with 26 as though they were equivalent would be misleading.

For a useful comparison, match the exact gas and hybrid trims and configurations, including cab, drivetrain, wheels, and tires, and compare city, highway, and combined ratings on the same basis. Toyota’s published trim figures show the hybrid’s rating varies, and the exact vehicle’s window sticker is the relevant reference.

Not on the available published figures alone. The i-FORCE MAX adds substantial power and torque while offering an EPA-estimated maximum of 24 MPG combined. That is a modest efficiency proposition, not evidence that fuel economy ceases to be a consideration for Tacoma buyers.

Nor do the published figures establish a real-world MPG average or how long fuel savings would take to offset the hybrid’s higher purchase price. A buyer would need a matched gas-trim rating, annual mileage, local fuel prices, comparable transaction prices, and consistent fuel-consumption assumptions to calculate a meaningful break-even point.

How to compare the hybrid with a gas Tacoma before buying
- Identify the exact configurations. Compare the trim, cab, drivetrain, wheels, and tires you would actually buy rather than using the best number from each model range.
- Check the vehicle’s rating. Use the window sticker and compare the specific vehicles through fueleconomy.gov. The EPA’s fuel-economy overview, last updated August 18, 2026, explains where vehicle information appears and points shoppers to the comparison site.
- Compare prices consistently. Toyota’s listed hybrid base MSRPs span $46,720 to $64,135 on its 2025 model page, but those figures are not current dealer quotes. Compare actual offers for similarly equipped trucks.
- Weigh capability against cost. Consider whether the hybrid’s output and standard 2400W onboard inverter are valuable to your use, alongside the purchase price and the fuel economy of your matched alternative.
