The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE Premium is the range-topping trim for buyers who want the Prius’s plug-in flexibility with a more upscale cabin and added convenience features. Its appeal is strongest if you can charge regularly and will use the Premium’s equipment; the lower XSE costs less while retaining the same estimated MPGe on Toyota’s model page. Range and listed price vary by source, so check the specific car’s window sticker before comparing deals.
What the XSE Premium adds
Toyota positions the XSE Premium above the SE and XSE. The XSE Premium’s main distinction is its comfort and technology equipment, rather than a more powerful powertrain: Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide lists 220 horsepower for the model and highlights these Premium features.
- 12.3-inch multimedia display and eight-speaker JBL audio
- Fixed glass roof and power liftback
- Driver-seat memory
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Digital Key capability
The XSE already adds 19-inch wheels, heated front seats, SofTex-trimmed seats and wireless charging over the SE. The SE has 17-inch wheels, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, according to Toyota’s fleet guide. The Premium’s case therefore rests on whether its extra cabin, audio and convenience equipment is worth the price difference to you.
How far can the Prius Plug-In Hybrid go on electricity?
Published figures do not agree on one XSE Premium electric range. Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide says the 2025 model offers up to 44 miles of estimated electric driving range; Edmunds lists 40 miles for its XSE Premium specification page; and Tom’s Guide lists 39 miles for the XSE Premium in its October 2025 review. Those figures should not be blended into a single guaranteed distance: confirm the EPA label or window sticker for the exact car, since trim and vehicle specification matter.
#1 Best Overall
- A plastic model that needs to be assembled.
- 1/32 scale color-coded plastic assembly kit
- Painting not required
- Seals included
For fuel economy, Toyota’s 2025 model page lists 50/114 estimated MPGe for the XSE Premium, meaning 50 MPGe in hybrid operation and 114 MPGe combined under its electric-and-gasoline estimate. Toyota lists 50/47/48 estimated city/highway/combined MPG for the XSE and XSE Premium. MPGe is not the same as miles per gallon on gasoline alone; actual results depend on charging frequency, driving conditions and how the vehicle is used.
What one week of driving looked like
Tom’s Guide reports that its writer drove an XSE Premium for a week and covered 229.4 miles. The writer recorded 82.2 MPGe on average while charging and using gasoline, then reported a 49 mpg average after stopping overnight charging. These are one reviewer’s results, not a controlled comparison or a prediction of what every owner will get. The writer described EV mode as smooth and responsive; that is a subjective driving impression.

2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid trim comparison
Toyota’s 2025 model page gives these trim prices and estimated economy figures. Its stated prices are base MSRPs, not dealer quotes.
| Trim | Base MSRP | Estimated MPGe | Notable equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE | $33,375 | 53/127 | 17-inch wheels; Toyota Safety Sense 3.0; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, per Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide |
| XSE | $36,625 | 50/114 | 19-inch wheels; heated front seats; SofTex-trimmed seats; wireless charging, per Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide |
| XSE Premium | $40,070 | 50/114 | 12.3-inch display; JBL audio; fixed glass roof; power liftback; driver-seat memory; heated and ventilated front seats; Digital Key capability, per Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide |
There is a source discrepancy for the Premium’s price: Toyota’s model page lists $40,070, while Toyota’s March 2025 fleet guide gives a $39,670 starting MSRP. Use the model page figure as Toyota’s current listed base MSRP in this comparison, but verify the individual vehicle’s sticker for its actual configuration and price. Options, dealer pricing and incentives are not established by these figures.

Is the XSE Premium worth the upgrade?
Choose it if you will use the added equipment
The Premium is the logical pick if you specifically want the larger screen, JBL sound, glass roof, power liftback, seat memory and ventilated front seats. Those features make the trim more comfort- and convenience-oriented; they do not change Toyota’s listed estimated MPGe relative to the XSE.
Consider the XSE if you want the essentials for less
The XSE costs $3,445 less than the Premium on Toyota’s 2025 model page and shares its listed 50/114 estimated MPGe. It retains heated front seats and wireless charging while forgoing the Premium’s highlighted upgrades. For a buyer who prioritizes plug-in operation and does not need the additional equipment, that price gap is the central trade-off.

The SE is the value-oriented entry point
The SE has the lowest listed base MSRP and Toyota’s highest estimated MPGe figures among these three trims. Its 17-inch wheels and simpler equipment mix distinguish it from the XSE models. Compare the actual feature list and vehicle sticker rather than assuming every listing has identical equipment.

Edmunds lists a Quick Charging Cable Package for its XSE Premium specification page. If you need a replacement charging cable, confirm connector type and fitment for the exact vehicle before buying; the available information does not verify compatibility for any particular third-party cable. The independent reviewer’s overnight charging is one example of use, not an indication that a specific home charger or installation is required.

For a plug-in hybrid, the value of the electric range depends on whether charging fits your routine. Regular charging gives you the opportunity to use the car in electric mode for shorter trips; with less frequent charging, gasoline fuel economy becomes more relevant. Neither the published range figures nor the single week-long report guarantees an individual owner’s results.
Verdict
The 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE Premium is a well-equipped top trim whose strongest case is its combination of plug-in capability and upscale convenience features. Toyota’s figures indicate the XSE Premium and XSE share estimated MPGe, so the Premium’s added cost buys equipment rather than a listed efficiency advantage. If those features matter to you, it is the most complete trim; if not, the XSE appears to preserve the core efficiency figures for less. Verify the window sticker for price and electric-range details before deciding.
