Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro makes a stronger case for its price with a hybrid powertrain, more output, a higher stated maximum tow rating, and factory off-road equipment. But Toyota’s published information cited here does not verify that it costs exactly $12,000 more than a comparable 2024 V6 TRD Pro. Toyota lists the 2025 TRD Pro at a $66,900 base MSRP; check the matching 2024 MSRP and compare both years on the same fee basis before treating the $12,000 figure as fact.
What changed between the 2024 V6 and 2025 TRD Pro?
This is a U.S.-market, manufacturer-specification comparison. Toyota’s 2024 4Runner used a 4.0-liter V6 rated at 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. The 2025 TRD Pro uses Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain: a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, rated at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic. Toyota describes the 2025 as an all-new generation on the TNGA-F platform.
Those are manufacturer ratings, not a measurement of how either vehicle accelerates or feels on the road. Toyota’s specification comparison is useful for understanding what changed, but it does not establish real-world performance, fuel economy, reliability, or ride quality.
10 reasons the 2025 TRD Pro may justify a higher price
1. The hybrid powertrain produces more rated output
Toyota rates the 2025 i-FORCE MAX at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, versus 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft for the 2024 4.0-liter V6. The difference is substantial on paper, particularly in torque. The figures alone do not prove a specific advantage in acceleration, towing under load, or off-road performance.

2. Toyota states a higher maximum tow rating
Toyota lists maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds for the 2024 4Runner and up to 6,000 pounds for the 2025 4Runner. These are manufacturer maximums, not a promise that every configuration can tow that amount. Confirm the rating for the specific vehicle and account for its equipment, trailer, payload, and towing conditions.
3. The TRD Pro gets the hybrid as standard equipment
Toyota makes i-FORCE MAX standard on the 2025 TRD Pro. Buyers do not have to choose an optional hybrid package to get the higher-output powertrain in this grade. The comparison here is specifically with the outgoing V6-powered 2024 TRD Pro, not with every 2024 4Runner trim.

4. FOX QS3 adjustable shocks are included
Toyota lists FOX QS3 adjustable shocks among the TRD Pro’s factory equipment. For a buyer who wants this named suspension hardware, having it included from Toyota may be preferable to sourcing and installing an upgrade separately. The equipment listing does not establish ride comfort, handling, or how the shocks perform in a particular setting.
5. It comes with 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires
Toyota specifies 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires for the TRD Pro. That factory fitment is relevant to shoppers comparing vehicles equipped for off-pavement use, but Toyota’s cited information does not give a dollar value for the tires or enough detail to identify a particular retail replacement by exact size and load rating.

6. A TRD performance air intake is part of the package
The TRD Pro equipment list also names a TRD performance air intake. This is another factory-installed component a buyer need not add after purchase. Toyota’s listing does not quantify its effect on power or provide an independent test result, so it should be treated as included equipment rather than proof of a particular performance gain.
7. The 2025 is a new generation, not a V6 carryover
Toyota identifies the 2025 4Runner as an all-new generation built on the TNGA-F platform. The change is broader than swapping engines: the cited specifications also show a new transmission and updated standard driver-assistance technology. A new platform and generation establish that the vehicle has been substantially reworked; they do not by themselves prove greater durability or a better ownership record.

8. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the 2025 lineup
Toyota says Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all 2025 4Runner grades. The 2024 model’s standard system was Toyota Safety Sense P. This identifies a change in the included driver-assistance suite, not a demonstrated improvement in crash outcomes. Toyota’s announcement describes the 2025 hybrid as having “up to an EPA-estimated 24 MPG highway rating.”
9. The eight-speed automatic replaces the V6 model’s five-speed
The cited 2024 V6 specification pairs the engine with a five-speed automatic; the 2025 generation uses an eight-speed automatic. That is a meaningful hardware change for buyers comparing the generations. The number of gears alone does not establish smoother shifts, better response, or improved fuel economy in everyday driving.

10. The equipment arrives as a factory-matched TRD Pro package
The hybrid powertrain, FOX QS3 shocks, TRD intake, and 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires are listed as TRD Pro equipment. For shoppers who want this combination, buying it together in a factory grade avoids having to assemble an equivalent list of upgrades themselves. The available Toyota information does not assign separate prices to those components, so it cannot show how much of the vehicle’s price is accounted for by any one item.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the $12,000 price difference check out?
Toyota’s U.S. features page lists the 2025 TRD Pro at a $66,900 base MSRP. The cited official material does not establish the comparable 2024 TRD Pro MSRP, so it does not substantiate an exact $12,000 increase. Toyota’s 2025 launch release gives a $40,770 starting MSRP for the SR5, plus $1,450 in delivery, processing, and handling; that is a different grade and cannot be used to calculate the TRD Pro’s year-over-year price change.
To test the headline figure, compare the official base MSRP for a 2024 TRD Pro with the 2025 TRD Pro’s $66,900 base MSRP, using the same treatment of delivery and handling fees. Dealer markups, discounts, and actual transaction prices are separate from MSRP and are not established by those figures.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the premium makes sense for you
- The 2025 package is more compelling if you specifically want the hybrid’s higher published output, the higher stated maximum tow rating, and the named factory TRD Pro equipment.
- The price case is less clear if you are weighing the vehicle only on fuel savings, long-term reliability, comfort, or real-world performance. The cited specifications do not settle those questions.
- Before signing, confirm the exact vehicle’s equipment and towing rating, and compare the two model years’ official TRD Pro MSRPs on a consistent fee basis.
