2025 Toyota 4Runner: Specs, Pricing, Trims, and Everything New

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is an all-new sixth-generation SUV with turbocharged four-cylinder power, an available high-output hybrid, and two important new grades: Platinum and Trailhunter. Toyota’s current U.S. model page displays a $41,270 starting MSRP for the SR5 and $67,400 for both the TRD Pro and Trailhunter. The right version depends less on the badge than on whether you want an everyday SUV, a luxury model, conventional trail equipment, high-performance off-road hardware, or factory overlanding gear.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is an all-new sixth-generation SUV, not a routine refresh. It replaces the previous-generation V6 strategy with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, adds an available 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid, and expands the range with the new premium Platinum and factory-overlanding Trailhunter grades.

U.S. pricing currently starts at $41,270 MSRP for the SR5 on Toyota’s model page. The range extends to $67,400 for both the TRD Pro and Trailhunter, before buyers account for destination, dealer charges, options, taxes, and registration. The most powerful version produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, while displayed fuel-economy figures vary considerably by grade and powertrain.

Price and specification note: The prices below reflect the figures displayed on Toyota’s current U.S. 2025 4Runner model page used for this article. Toyota’s original December 10, 2024 launch announcement listed a $40,770 starting price plus a $1,450 Delivery Processing and Handling charge. Because Toyota’s presentation and prices can change, verify the window sticker and destination charge before treating any figure as a purchase quote.

What is new on the 2025 Toyota 4Runner?

The biggest news is the redesign itself. The 2025 model begins the 4Runner’s sixth generation and moves the lineup to Toyota’s turbocharged four-cylinder architecture. Buyers can choose between the gas-only i-FORCE engine and the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid system, with both powertrains connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

  • New powertrains: The turbocharged 2.4-liter i-FORCE makes up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid raises output to as much as 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • New grades: Platinum joins the range as a premium model, while Trailhunter gives Toyota a dedicated factory overlanding grade.
  • Broader capability strategy: The lineup spans 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD configurations, depending on grade and equipment.
  • More technology: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard. An 8-inch or available 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display is offered depending on grade.
  • Useful 4Runner hardware remains part of the formula: Toyota lists an available power rear window, an available hands-free power liftgate, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and an electronically controlled locking rear differential among the available equipment.

That range is the central idea behind the redesign. An SR5 can serve as a relatively straightforward everyday SUV, while TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter target progressively more serious trail and expedition use. Limited and Platinum address buyers who want the 4Runner’s shape and capability with more upscale equipment.

Engines, hybrid output, drivetrain, and MPG

2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE

The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Toyota quotes up to 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid

The available i-FORCE MAX combines the turbocharged engine with a hybrid system. Toyota quotes up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, also with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its advantage is not just the higher horsepower number; the much higher torque figure is relevant to buyers who regularly carry gear, climb grades, or drive on technical terrain. The exact equipment and drivetrain pairing still depends on the selected grade.

Displayed configuration group City/highway estimate
SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium 20/26 mpg
TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium 19/25 mpg
Displayed i-FORCE MAX grades 23/24 mpg

Toyota summarizes the 4Runner range as reaching up to 23 mpg combined. That is a ceiling, not a universal rating. The applicable EPA estimate changes with engine, drivetrain, wheels, tires, and grade. In particular, the off-road hardware and tire packages can produce a different result from a similarly powered street-oriented model.

Drivetrain and off-road systems

The 2025 4Runner is available with different levels of four-wheel-drive hardware rather than one identical system across the lineup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2WD: Available on configurations intended primarily for road use.
  • Part-time 4WD: Gives the driver a selectable four-wheel-drive system for conditions where additional traction is needed. It is not the same as an always-on full-time system.
  • Full-time 4WD: Available on certain configurations and designed to provide continuous four-wheel-drive operation.

Depending on grade, Toyota lists capability features including Multi-Terrain Select, which helps tailor traction control behavior to different surfaces; Crawl Control, which helps manage low-speed progress over difficult terrain; and an electronically controlled locking rear differential. Buyers should confirm the exact combination on the vehicle’s build sheet rather than assuming that every TRD badge includes every system.

Suspension and tire choices separate the ordinary trail grades from the flagship models. The TRD Off-Road family uses 18-inch wheels, 33-inch all-terrain tires in Toyota’s displayed specifications, and Bilstein monotube shocks with remote reservoirs. TRD Pro and Trailhunter use their own factory suspension and tire packages rather than simply adding appearance parts to the same setup.

2025 4Runner trim guide: which one makes sense?

SR5: the practical entry point

The SR5 is the least expensive way into the redesigned 4Runner and the easiest grade to justify if the vehicle will spend most of its time commuting, traveling, or handling family duties. Toyota lists 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and available third-row seating.

Choose the SR5 if you want the new generation’s basic powertrain and design without immediately paying for specialized suspension or premium trim equipment. Its main trade-off is that the entry price does not buy the trail hardware found on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, or Trailhunter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium: road-oriented style

TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium are aimed at buyers who want a more athletic appearance and sport-tuned suspension but do not primarily need a dedicated trail setup. They are the road-focused alternatives to the TRD Off-Road family.

The Premium grade adds SofTex-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen. That makes it the more appealing choice for buyers who care about daily comfort and technology but do not want to move to a Limited or Platinum.

TRD Off-Road: the conventional trail choice

The TRD Off-Road is the logical middle ground for an owner who expects to use the 4Runner on trails rather than merely wanting rugged styling. Toyota lists 18-inch wheels, 33-inch all-terrain tires in the displayed specifications, Bilstein monotube shocks with remote reservoirs, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.

It is also available with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, creating a choice between the lower-priced gas version and the higher-output hybrid version within the same general off-road family. The TRD Off-Road Premium adds comfort-oriented equipment, including SofTex trim and a power liftgate, while retaining the trail-focused positioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX and TRD Off-Road Premium i-FORCE MAX: capability plus hybrid output

These grades are for buyers who want the TRD Off-Road equipment strategy and the hybrid’s 326-hp, 465-lb.-ft. output. Toyota’s displayed figures show 23/24 mpg city/highway for the i-FORCE MAX grades, but the exact rating still depends on the configuration.

The Premium version is the better fit when heated and ventilated seats, additional convenience equipment, and a more finished cabin matter as much as trail hardware. The non-Premium model keeps the price closer to the standard TRD Off-Road while adding the hybrid powertrain.

Limited: comfort-first 4Runner ownership

Limited shifts the emphasis toward luxury. Toyota lists 20-inch wheels, leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, and available third-row seating. It can also be configured with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system.

This is the grade to consider when the 4Runner’s SUV design and available capability matter, but the vehicle’s primary role will be paved-road travel. The larger wheels and luxury equipment are not the same off-road package found on TRD Pro or Trailhunter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platinum: the new premium flagship

Platinum is new for 2025 and sits above Limited as the premium-oriented grade. Toyota lists premium leather-trimmed seats, a 20-inch gloss-black wheel design, and dark-chrome exterior treatment.

Its appeal is equipment, finish, and exclusivity within the lineup—not specialized overlanding hardware. A buyer choosing Platinum should do so for the premium presentation and features rather than expecting it to substitute for a TRD Pro or Trailhunter on demanding trails.

TRD Pro: the performance and Baja-inspired choice

TRD Pro remains the flagship performance/off-road grade. Toyota lists FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass QS3 shocks, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, and a stabilizer disconnect mechanism.

Choose TRD Pro if high-speed off-road performance and factory suspension hardware are more important than luxury trim appointments. It shares the $67,400 displayed base MSRP with Trailhunter, but the two grades serve different purposes.

Trailhunter: the factory overlanding choice

Trailhunter is the clearest answer for buyers who want a 4Runner equipped from the factory for overlanding-style travel. Toyota lists Old Man Emu suspension hardware, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, and an ARB roof rack in its displayed grade summary.

The distinction is useful: TRD Pro is the performance/off-road grade, while Trailhunter is the expedition- and gear-carrying-oriented grade. Neither is automatically the best choice for every owner. If the vehicle will rarely leave pavement, the extra hardware and price may be difficult to justify; if the plan involves remote travel and roof-mounted equipment, Trailhunter’s factory equipment is more directly aligned with that use.

TRD Pro vs. Trailhunter

Question TRD Pro Trailhunter
Primary mission Performance-oriented off-road driving Factory overlanding and expedition-style travel
Suspension hardware listed by Toyota FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass QS3 shocks Old Man Emu suspension hardware
Tires 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires
Notable equipment Stabilizer disconnect mechanism ARB roof rack
Displayed base MSRP $67,400 $67,400

The shared price does not make the grades interchangeable. Consider how you actually drive: fast, demanding off-road sections point toward TRD Pro; carrying camping equipment and building a travel setup points toward Trailhunter.

Technology and everyday features

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the 2025 4Runner lineup, rather than being reserved for an expensive package. Infotainment equipment varies by grade. The SR5 uses an 8-inch touchscreen, while Toyota lists an available 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display on higher or better-equipped versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is listed for the SR5, and the feature is part of the model’s broader technology package. A power rear window remains available, which is one of the 4Runner’s useful cargo- and ventilation-oriented features. A hands-free power liftgate is also available and appears on grades such as TRD Sport Premium and the more upscale versions.

Because equipment can vary by grade, package, drivetrain, and production configuration, use the vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet to verify details such as screen size, liftgate operation, third-row seating, and four-wheel-drive hardware.

Safety: strong results in several tests, but not a clean sweep

The fairest summary of the 2025 4Runner’s independent safety results is mixed but generally encouraging in several important areas—not simply “safe” or “unsafe.” Toyota supplies standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports good results in multiple crashworthiness and crash-prevention evaluations.

IIHS results to know

  • The driver-side small-overlap front test is rated good.
  • The updated side test is rated good.
  • The updated moderate-overlap front test receives a marginal overall rating. IIHS identifies the rear-passenger restraints and dummy kinematics as contributors to the result.
  • The vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention system is rated good.
  • The pedestrian crash-prevention system is rated good.

Headlights vary by trim

Headlight performance is not uniform across the tested configurations. IIHS gives an acceptable headlight rating to Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. The tested configurations for SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Off-Road Premium i-FORCE MAX receive a poor headlight rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This trim distinction matters to buyers who drive rural roads or unlit highways at night. It also shows why a single overall safety adjective can be misleading: a 4Runner can perform well in front crash prevention and several crash tests while still having a marginal moderate-overlap result and trim-dependent headlight performance.

Ownership documents, maintenance, and recall checking

Toyota provides separate owner, multimedia, driving-support, and warranty/maintenance documentation for the 2025 4Runner. Use those materials for configuration-specific operating instructions, maintenance intervals, warning-system limitations, and the correct procedure for features such as four-wheel-drive controls and driver assistance. General advice written for an older 4Runner may not apply to this sixth-generation model.

Recall 25V595: check the VIN

NHTSA recall campaign 25V595 covers a specific subset of 2025 4Runner vehicles associated with a combination-meter software condition that could cause the monitor to go blank. The recall report describes seven potentially involved 4Runners in the relevant production subset.

That does not mean every 2025 4Runner is affected. Recall applicability is VIN-specific. Before buying a new or used example, run its VIN through the official NHTSA or Toyota recall lookup and ask the dealer whether any open remedy has been completed. A vehicle’s trim, engine, or advertised model year is not a substitute for a VIN check.

Useful 2025 4Runner accessories

Interior protection is one of the few accessory purchases that makes sense before the first muddy trip, especially if the 4Runner will carry pets, wet shoes, sand, camping equipment, or trail debris. Toyota lists all-weather floor liners and floor mats for the model. Toyota Genuine Parts identifies PT908-89000-02 as a model-specific all-weather floor-mat part number.

Before buying 2025 Toyota 4Runner floor mats, verify the model year, seating configuration, fitment, seller, and current price. Toyota says the mats are designed to contain moisture, dirt, sand, and outside debris. Each mat must be secured using its retention hooks, and Toyota warns never to place one mat over another. That installation detail is a safety requirement, not merely a cleanliness tip.

A cargo-area equivalent is a 2025 Toyota 4Runner cargo mat. Toyota’s accessory material describes a molded perimeter lip, a skid-resistant surface, durable construction, and protection against spills, wear, and cargo movement. Confirm the cargo mat’s fitment for the vehicle’s seating configuration before ordering, particularly if the 4Runner has available third-row seating.

Toyota’s broader catalog also lists categories such as skid plates, emergency kits, storage products, recovery equipment, roof-related equipment, and camping accessories. These can be useful for owners building a Trailhunter-style travel setup, but buyers should separate model-specific Toyota accessories from aftermarket parts and confirm compatibility with the suspension, tires, roof rack, and intended load.

Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner should you buy?

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Lowest entry price and everyday practicality SR5 It is the entry point, with an 8-inch screen, wireless smartphone compatibility, 17-inch wheels, and available third-row seating.
Sporty street appearance and suspension tuning TRD Sport Premium It adds the more desirable comfort and technology features without moving to the luxury grades.
Regular trail use at a sensible step-up price TRD Off-Road It adds the trail-oriented tire, shock, and traction-control equipment.
Trail hardware plus greater output TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX It combines the off-road grade family with the 326-hp, 465-lb.-ft. hybrid system.
Comfort-first driving Limited or Platinum Both emphasize upscale seating, wheels, and exterior treatment; Limited also offers the hybrid configuration.
High-performance off-roading TRD Pro Its FOX suspension, 33-inch Toyo tires, and stabilizer disconnect target performance-oriented trail driving.
Factory overlanding equipment Trailhunter Its Old Man Emu suspension and ARB roof rack are aimed at carrying and supporting expedition gear.

What to verify before signing a purchase order

  1. Confirm the exact MSRP date and charge structure. Compare the dealer’s worksheet with Toyota’s current displayed price and verify the delivery or destination charge separately.
  2. Identify the powertrain. Make sure the window sticker says i-FORCE or i-FORCE MAX and check the actual drivetrain rather than relying on a trim name.
  3. Check the equipment list. Verify screen size, third-row seating, liftgate, rear-window operation, off-road systems, wheel and tire package, and four-wheel-drive type.
  4. Review the safety configuration. If nighttime driving matters, pay attention to the IIHS headlight result for the specific grade.
  5. Run the VIN through a recall database. Specifically check for open campaigns, including recall 25V595, without assuming that the campaign applies to every 2025 4Runner.
  6. Verify accessory fitment. Floor mats and cargo mats must match the model, seating layout, and retention-hook arrangement. Never stack floor mats.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the 2025 Toyota 4Runner cost?

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner starts at a currently displayed U.S. MSRP of $41,270 for the SR5. Toyota’s page lists the TRD Pro and Trailhunter at $67,400 before destination, options, taxes, registration, and dealer fees. Toyota originally announced a $40,770 starting price plus a $1,450 Delivery Processing and Handling charge on December 10, 2024, so buyers should verify the current price and charge structure.

Does the 2025 4Runner have a hybrid?

Yes. The available 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota’s displayed figures for the i-FORCE MAX grades are 23 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, although the exact rating depends on grade, drivetrain, tires, and equipment.

What is the difference between the 2025 4Runner TRD Pro and Trailhunter?

TRD Pro is the performance-oriented off-road model, with FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass QS3 shocks, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, and a stabilizer disconnect mechanism. Trailhunter is the factory overlanding model, with Old Man Emu suspension hardware, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, and an ARB roof rack. Both have a displayed base MSRP of $67,400.

Is every 2025 Toyota 4Runner affected by recall 25V595?

No. NHTSA recall 25V595 applies to a specific subset of 2025 4Runners involving a combination-meter software condition that could cause the monitor to go blank. The recall report identifies seven potentially involved vehicles in the relevant production subset. Applicability must be checked by VIN through the official NHTSA or Toyota lookup.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s major strengths are its genuinely new sixth-generation platform, broad grade range, available high-torque hybrid, and unusually clear separation between everyday, luxury, trail, performance, and overlanding models. The SR5 and TRD Off-Road are the rational starting points for most buyers; TRD Pro and Trailhunter are specialized choices rather than automatic upgrades. Before buying, confirm the current price structure, configuration-specific MPG and equipment, IIHS headlight result, and VIN-specific recall status.
