The figures below come from the sources listed for each model. They are not a controlled, cross-brand measurement test: labels, configurations, and published methods differ. “Behind first row” generally reflects a maximum-cargo configuration with rear seats folded; it should not be confused with room available while carrying passengers in those rows.

Among the official 2025 figures compared here, the Ford Expedition MAX leads on published capacity at all three row positions: 123.1 cubic feet behind the first row, 84.5 behind the second, and 37.4 behind the third. The standard Expedition is smaller in Ford’s figures at 108.5, 69.9, and 22.9 cubic feet, respectively. The MAX’s longer body is reflected in greater listed capacity at each position.

This is a winner among the identified figures, not proof of a market-wide or independently measured winner. Manufacturers do not all present capacity with the same labels or methods. Kia, for example, lists both SAE and VDA volumes for the Sorento; keep those measurement systems separate when comparing numbers.
Compare cargo space behind the third row first
If you regularly travel with all passenger rows occupied, the behind-third-row number answers the most useful question: how much room remains without folding the seats needed by passengers? In the figures here, the Expedition MAX lists 37.4 cubic feet, the standard Expedition 22.9, the Traverse 22.9, the Sorento 12.6, and the cited Hyundai manual configuration 18.

Those numbers are not interchangeable with maximum cargo volume. A large behind-first-row figure describes a different seating arrangement and does not tell you how much luggage fits with every seat in place. For a trip with fewer passengers, behind-second-row capacity may matter more; the Expedition MAX lists 84.5 cubic feet and the standard Expedition 69.9.

How to use the numbers when choosing an SUV
- Match the row to your normal passenger load. Use behind-third-row capacity if the third row is usually occupied, behind-second-row capacity if it is normally folded, and behind-first-row capacity only when comparing maximum cargo configurations.
- Check the exact body and trim. The Expedition and Expedition MAX have distinct published capacities. Honda’s Passport guide also reports standard and maximum cargo figures, with small differences among listed trims.
- Keep measurement labels intact. Compare SAE figures with SAE and VDA with VDA when the source provides both. A single ranking that combines methods can imply greater precision than the published data supports.
- Confirm fit for your actual gear. Cubic feet describe volume, not whether a stroller, suitcase, pet crate, or bulky item fits through the opening or beneath the cargo cover. Check the vehicle in person with the items you carry, and account for seat-folding needs.
Cargo room is only one part of a family-SUV decision
Capacity should be weighed alongside passenger seating and the practical trade-offs of a family vehicle. The Edmunds overview carried by AP discusses roominess, value, versatility, and fuel economy as relevant considerations for 2025 family SUVs. A larger maximum cargo figure alone does not establish which SUV best suits a particular household.
