The 2025 Ram 1500 RHO is a fast, wide-body off-road pickup built for covering rough ground at speed. Its 540-hp twin-turbo inline-six gives up the old TRX’s supercharged V-8 drama, but the RHO keeps serious long-travel suspension and, according to reviewers, is more composed on pavement and over bumps. It is best understood as a more balanced desert runner—not a direct mechanical replacement for the TRX.
What engine is in the 2025 Ram RHO?
Ram fits the RHO with a 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output twin-turbo inline-six rated by Stellantis at 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic and four-wheel drive are standard, according to Car and Driver. The engine delivers substantial power, but its character differs from the TRX’s V-8: Car and Driver describes the inline-six as quieter and less theatrical.
That does not make the RHO slow. Car and Driver recorded 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds in its instrumented test, 0.6 second behind its TRX comparison. That is one publication’s test result, not a guaranteed time for every truck or condition. The same Car and Driver page lists 15 mpg combined, with 14 city and 16 highway; check the current EPA label for the specific vehicle rather than treating those listed figures as a current certification.
Is the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO a good off-road truck?
Yes—especially if the plan is to travel quickly across open, rough terrain. The RHO retains the basic high-speed off-road recipe: 35-inch tires, 11.8 inches of ground clearance, adaptive Bilstein Black Hawk e2 dampers, and up to 14 inches of rear axle travel, according to Ram’s April 2024 announcement. Car and Driver specifies 13 inches of front and 14 inches of rear wheel travel, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires, full-time four-wheel drive, an electronically locking rear differential, and multiple drive modes.

Car and Driver’s first-drive reviewers found the front end lighter and more willing to turn than the TRX’s, and said the RHO was better balanced over bumps and jumps. MotorTrend also praised the revised damping and improved daily ride, while judging the truck better suited to wide-open desert than tight, twisty trails. That is a reviewer’s assessment of its feel and dimensions, not a manufacturer restriction or a claim that it cannot travel on narrower trails.
The hardware is aimed at speed and control over uneven ground rather than maximum maneuverability in confined spaces. A five-link coil rear arrangement and adaptive shocks are part of the package; the truck’s width and 35-inch tires are worth considering when choosing trails and parking spaces.

How does the Ram RHO compare with the TRX?
The RHO occupies a related role as Ram’s high-performance off-road pickup, but it is not simply a TRX with a different engine. The older TRX used a 702-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. The RHO trades that engine’s louder, more forceful character for a 540-hp twin-turbo inline-six and a lighter-feeling front end.

If the appeal of the TRX is the supercharged V-8 spectacle, the RHO will feel like a compromise. If the priority is high-speed off-road capability with a more settled everyday ride, reviewers suggest the RHO is the more balanced interpretation.

How much can a Ram 1500 RHO tow and carry?
Car and Driver and MotorTrend list maximum ratings of 8,380 pounds for towing and 1,520 pounds for payload. Those are published maximums, not figures that apply to every RHO configuration. MotorTrend’s fully loaded test truck, with a 7,800-pound gross vehicle weight rating, had 1,162 pounds of payload.
Options and configuration affect the capacity of an individual truck. Before loading passengers or cargo, or selecting a trailer, check the certification label on the actual vehicle and consult its owner information for the applicable limits. Do not assume the maximum payload or tow rating is available on the truck you are considering.

What are the RHO’s cabin and technology like?
The RHO is offered as a crew cab with a short bed, according to Car and Driver. Its review lists a standard 12.0-inch center infotainment screen and 12.3-inch driver display; an option group adds a 14.5-inch center screen and 10.3-inch passenger display.
Equipment descriptions depend on the reviewed configuration. MotorTrend’s highly equipped test truck had more than 50 inches of combined displays, massaging leather-trimmed front seats, heated and cooled reclining rear seats, 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio, and hands-free driving assistance as part of a $9,995 option group. Those features describe that test vehicle and package, not a promise that every RHO includes them.

Ram announced a starting price of $69,995 plus $1,995 destination in April 2024. Car and Driver’s later review/specification page showed a $71,990 base price and $84,420 for its as-tested configuration.
