Polaris’s 2025 RZR Pro family comprises the Pro R, Pro S and Pro XP, with different widths, powertrains and intended terrain. The Pro R is the lineup’s dune- and desert-oriented model, but choosing a machine for Oregon’s dunes also means checking fitment, permits, required equipment and the rules for the specific riding area.
How the 2025 RZR Pro models differ
Polaris describes the Pro R as its desert- and dune-oriented model, the Pro S as a turbocharged option, and the narrower Pro XP as suited to tighter terrain. The specifications below are manufacturer-stated, not independent performance results. Figures are for the 2025 lineup as described by Polaris.
| Model | Engine and rated power | Width | Wheelbase and travel | Polaris’s positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RZR Pro R | Naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder; 225 HP | 74 inches | 104.5-inch wheelbase; 29 inches of usable suspension travel | Desert and dunes |
| RZR Pro S | Turbocharged; 181 HP | 74 inches | 96-inch wheelbase; travel not stated by Polaris in the cited announcement | Formerly called Turbo R; distinct turbocharged option |
| RZR Pro XP | 181 HP; engine configuration not stated in the cited announcement | 64 inches | Wheelbase and travel not stated by Polaris in the cited announcement | Tighter and wooded terrain |
Polaris also lists DYNAMIX DV semi-active suspension and driver-selectable Pro Performance True 4WD for the Pro R. Those features and the power ratings describe the manufacturer’s specifications; they do not establish how the models compare in real dune conditions. The announcement says the wider Pro lineup gained more than 120 accessories, but accessory compatibility and total setup cost depend on the specific vehicle and equipment.
Is the Pro R the right choice for Oregon dunes?
The Pro R is the clearest match within this family if you are prioritizing Polaris’s dune-oriented positioning and want the listed 225-HP engine, 74-inch width and longer wheelbase. That does not make it the automatic choice for every rider: width, vehicle configuration, trim, included technology, accessory fitment and total cost all matter. The Pro S shares the 74-inch width but has a shorter wheelbase and turbocharged 181-HP rating; the 64-inch Pro XP is the narrower option Polaris positions for tighter terrain.

Polaris’s 2025 Pro R Dune Package includes a 32-inch Pro Armor Sand 16XT tire-and-wheel set along with other accessories. Polaris’s brochure describes the tire as providing “Precision engineered for hard turning bite and added flotation and stability” and says it is “Best for high HP vehicles that require lots of traction in the sand.” These are Polaris’s marketing descriptions, not independent test findings. Check the exact model and trim fitment and current availability before buying Pro Armor Sand 16XT sand tires; Polaris warns that fitment and availability can change.
The Dune Package also shows examples such as a 32-inch combo LED light bar, chase light, cargo box, cooler, storage bags and mirrors. Treat these as package examples rather than independently tested recommendations, and confirm each accessory works with the vehicle configuration you are considering.

Where the Oregon Dunes are and how riding areas differ
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s 2026–2027 ATV Guide describes the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA) as 40 miles of coastline between Florence and Coos Bay, with northern, middle and southern dune sections. The guide reports 10,000 acres for the ODNRA and says Oregon has over 20,000 acres of dunes open to ATV use. Those figures describe different scopes: the ODNRA’s reported acreage is not the same as the statewide open-to-ATV total.
| Section in the state guide | Named access areas | OHV hours listed in the 2026–2027 guide |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Dunes | South Jetty and Siltcoos | 10 p.m.–6 a.m. curfew |
| Middle Dunes | Winchester Bay/Umpqua | Winchester Bay/Riley Ranch area described as allowing riding 24/7 |
| Southern Dunes | Spinreel, Riley Ranch, Hauser and Horsfall | Midnight–6 a.m. curfew |
The same guide says the area is open year-round and busier in summer and on weekends. Hours and access are location-specific; check the current land-manager information for your intended access point before traveling, since rules and restrictions can change.

Permits and equipment to check before riding
Oregon classifies qualifying side-by-sides as Class IV ATVs. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s 2026–2027 guide says an ATV operating permit is required when operating on land open to ATV use. It lists a $10 permit valid for two years. The guide’s listed Class IV requirements include:
- A two-pound fire extinguisher.
- A roll bar or enclosed cab.
- Seats and seat belts for the operator and passengers.
- A red/orange flag when operating on sand.
- Compliance with the ODNRA’s listed 93 dBA sound limit.
Confirm current permit details and requirements in the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department ATV Guide and with the land manager for the area you plan to ride. The guide’s figures and rules are specific to its 2026–2027 edition.

Polaris operating and break-in instructions for sand
The 2025 Polaris Pro R owner manual gives model-specific operating guidance for sand and dunes. Follow the manual for your vehicle rather than assuming instructions are identical across the Pro family.
- Low gear: Polaris says to select low gear when consistently operating below 35 mph in hard-pulling terrain such as sand or dunes. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independently established threshold for every situation.
- Belt break-in: For sand/dune belt break-in, the manual calls for low gear during the first five miles and cautions against aggressive acceleration and high-speed operation during break-in.
- Riding behavior: The manual warns against abrupt maneuvers.
- Spark arrestor: Polaris says the vehicle’s spark arrestor must be installed and functional on U.S. public lands.
Read the full manual for your vehicle’s operating and safety instructions before riding. The figures and procedures above are from the 2025 Pro R manual and should not be assumed to cover other model years or models.
