Short answer: Buy the 2025 Nissan Frontier for standard 310-hp V6 power, stronger maximum towing, and a simpler midsize-pickup formula. Buy the 2024 Toyota Tacoma for its all-new generation, available 326-hp hybrid, 465 lb.-ft. of torque, more advanced off-road hardware, available manual transmission, and standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
This is an intentionally uneven model-year matchup: the Tacoma entered 2024 as an all-new fourth-generation truck, while the Frontier entered 2025 as an updated third-generation model. Prices and capabilities also vary sharply by cab, bed, drivetrain, and trim, so the best choice depends on how you will use the truck.
At a glance: which pickup is better?
The 2025 Nissan Frontier is the better choice for buyers who prioritize conventional V6 power, maximum towing, a straightforward powertrain lineup, and a broad choice of King Cab and Crew Cab configurations. Its 3.8-liter V6 makes 310 horsepower, and a properly equipped Frontier can tow up to 7,150 pounds.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is the more advanced choice. It is an all-new fourth-generation truck with turbocharged and hybrid powertrains, available manual transmission, more sophisticated factory off-road systems, and standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Its i-FORCE MAX hybrid produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

This is not a same-generation comparison. The 2024 Tacoma was completely redesigned, while the 2025 Frontier remained the third-generation truck with styling, equipment, towing, payload, and configuration updates. That distinction matters: the Frontier is the simpler, work-oriented alternative, while the Tacoma is the newer and more technologically ambitious platform.
2025 Nissan Frontier vs. 2024 Toyota Tacoma: key numbers
| Category | 2025 Nissan Frontier | 2024 Toyota Tacoma |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. starting MSRP | $32,050, excluding destination and handling | $31,500, excluding delivery, processing, and handling charges |
| Base engine approach | 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 | 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder |
| Maximum conventional-engine output | 310 hp and 281 lb.-ft. | Up to 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft. |
| Available hybrid output | Not offered | Up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. with i-FORCE MAX |
| Transmission choices | Nine-speed automatic | Eight-speed automatic; six-speed manual on selected non-hybrid models |
| Maximum towing | Up to 7,150 pounds | Up to 6,500 pounds |
| Maximum published payload | Up to 1,620 pounds | Approximately 1,709–1,710 pounds on selected configurations |
| Best published fuel economy | Up to 19 city/24 highway mpg | Up to 21 city/26 highway mpg on specified configurations |
| Cab and bed choices | King Cab or Crew Cab; short- and long-bed Crew Cab options | XtraCab or Double Cab; five- and six-foot bed choices |
These are manufacturer-listed or launch figures, not universal ratings for every truck. Cab style, bed length, drivetrain, tires, transmission, trim, and equipment can change the result substantially.
Price and value
On nominal starting price, the Tacoma has the advantage. The 2024 Tacoma launched at $31,500, while the 2025 Frontier launched at $32,050. The difference is only $550, and both figures exclude charges such as destination, processing, handling, taxes, registration, options, and dealer adjustments.
That does not make the Tacoma automatically the better value. The base prices represent differently configured lineups, and the final comparison depends on cab, bed, drivetrain, trim, and equipment. A buyer considering an inexpensive two-wheel-drive work truck may reach a different conclusion from a buyer shopping for a four-wheel-drive hybrid adventure truck.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Frontier’s value case is strongest when comparing similarly equipped non-hybrid pickups. Every 2025 Frontier receives the 310-hp V6, so the buyer does not need to select an expensive powertrain upgrade to obtain strong horsepower. The Tacoma’s standard i-FORCE engine is more torque-rich than its horsepower figure suggests, but the 326-hp, 465-lb.-ft. i-FORCE MAX hybrid is an available upgrade rather than the universal Tacoma powertrain.
The Tacoma earns back some of its price argument through newer technology and a wider range of factory-developed equipment. Buyers who specifically want hybrid torque, a manual transmission, advanced trail controls, or the TRD Pro and Trailhunter ecosystem may consider the Tacoma’s additional cost worthwhile.
Powertrains: familiar V6 versus turbocharged and hybrid Tacoma
2025 Nissan Frontier: one engine, one automatic
Every 2025 Frontier uses Nissan’s 3.8-liter direct-injection gasoline V6. It produces 310 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive models add a switch-operated two-speed transfer case, and the PRO-4X includes an electronic locking rear differential.
The benefit is consistency. There is no need to sort through multiple engine outputs to find the Frontier’s strongest conventional powertrain: the V6 is standard across the range. It also gives the truck more advertised horsepower than the non-hybrid Tacoma.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The trade-off is limited variety. The Frontier does not offer a hybrid system or a manual transmission, and its naturally aspirated V6 is an older-style solution compared with the Tacoma’s turbocharged and electrified options. That is not automatically a disadvantage for every owner, but it makes the Nissan less appealing to shoppers who want the latest powertrain technology.

2024 Toyota Tacoma: turbo four-cylinder, hybrid, and manual options
The redesigned Tacoma uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder in several output levels. Toyota lists up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque for the conventional i-FORCE powertrain.
The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid combines that engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. In its strongest application, the system produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. That gives the Tacoma a major torque advantage over the Frontier on paper, particularly for buyers who value low-speed pulling power and hybrid assistance.
Selected non-hybrid Tacoma configurations can also be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission. The manual is not available across the lineup and is not paired with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, so buyers must match the transmission preference to the appropriate trim and drivetrain.

Neither truck can be declared universally quicker or faster from these specifications alone. Instrumented acceleration and driving impressions vary with cab, drivetrain, tires, fuel load, road conditions, and test method. The defensible distinction is that the Frontier supplies more standard horsepower through its V6, while the Tacoma offers more available torque, hybrid output, and transmission variety.
Towing and payload: the Frontier wins the headline tow number
If maximum conventional towing is the primary requirement, the Frontier has the clearer advantage. Nissan lists a maximum rating of 7,150 pounds for a properly configured 2025 King Cab S 4×2. Crew Cab Frontier ratings reach as high as 7,070 pounds depending on configuration.
That maximum does not apply to every Frontier. The four-wheel-drive PRO-4X Crew Cab is rated up to 6,680 pounds, and the long-bed PRO-4X is rated lower. Off-road equipment, cab configuration, bed length, axle configuration, and other factors can reduce the rating. The exact truck’s door-jamb information, owner’s documentation, and factory tow-rating information should control any purchase or towing decision.
The 2024 Tacoma has a maximum towing rating of 6,500 pounds, available on specified SR5 i-FORCE, TRD PreRunner, and XtraCab configurations. That is a strong recreational-towing figure, but it trails the Frontier’s 7,150-pound headline maximum by 650 pounds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteToyota counters with more towing technology. Depending on configuration, the Tacoma can provide trailer-backup guidance, straight-path assist, a trailer brake controller, and Tow/Haul drive programming. These features do not increase the tow rating, but they can make positioning and controlling a trailer less demanding.
Payload is less straightforward. Nissan lists up to 1,620 pounds for the Frontier. Toyota materials identify approximately 1,709 to 1,710 pounds for certain 2024 Tacoma configurations, including specified i-FORCE MAX or TRD Off-Road variants depending on the source and build. That gives the Tacoma the higher published maximum payload figure, but neither maximum represents every trim.

- Comfortable and Effortless: By using a truck bed cargo mesh organizer, tiresome bundling can be avoided. It will let you embark on the journey swiftly and effortlessly.
- Easy to Use: 8-piece durable metal carabiners (replacement of plastic hooks) are utilized in this simple truck cargo net to securely fastenobjects, strong elasticity keeps objects in place at all times, without requiring you to struggle to tighten each string.

- Ideal Gift: Our highly elastic cargo net for trucks is ideal for adventurers traveling and is a must-have addition to birthday, holiday, or Christmas gifts for dad, spouse, and friends traveling outdoors.
Payload includes occupants, cargo, accessories, and in some calculations trailer tongue weight. A truck with a high payload rating can lose useful capacity quickly after adding passengers, a canopy, skid plates, recovery equipment, a heavy hitch, or other accessories. Compare the payload sticker on the exact truck rather than relying on the highest number in a brochure.
Useful towing accessory: match the hardware to the truck
A Class IV trailer hitch ball mount can be useful for a Frontier or Tacoma, but it is not a universal purchase. Match the receiver size, ball diameter, rise or drop, gross trailer rating, tongue-weight rating, and the trailer’s coupler before buying. The hitch accessory itself cannot raise either truck’s factory tow rating.
Fuel economy: Tacoma has the best published estimates
The 2025 Frontier’s best listed fuel-economy result is 19 city/24 highway mpg for specified rear-wheel-drive versions. Four-wheel-drive and PRO-4X models are lower, particularly when they use more aggressive all-terrain tires and off-road equipment.
Toyota lists maximum 2024 Tacoma estimates of up to 21 city/26 highway mpg for specified configurations. The exact result depends on trim, drivetrain, wheel-and-tire package, and transmission. The Tacoma’s hybrid option adds another reason to consider it for buyers who want electrified power, although the strongest fuel-economy figure is not automatically attached to the highest-output i-FORCE MAX model.
Therefore, the Tacoma has the efficiency advantage on its best-rated configurations. A fair comparison should pair similar trucks: rear-drive with rear-drive or four-wheel drive with four-wheel drive, while accounting for cab, bed, tires, and powertrain. EPA estimates are comparison tools, not guarantees of an individual driver’s fuel consumption.
Cab, bed, and everyday practicality
Frontier configurations
The Frontier is available as a four-seat King Cab or a five-seat Crew Cab. Crew Cab buyers can choose between a 59.5-inch short bed and a 73.3-inch long bed. The King Cab is useful for shoppers who want a longer-bed-oriented work truck with occasional rear-seat space, but its rear seating is not equivalent to a family-friendly crew cab.
Nissan also offers its Utili-track channel system along with bed extenders, towing equipment, storage solutions, and other cargo-management accessories. Those features help the Frontier serve as a practical hauling tool without requiring a large full-size pickup.
Tacoma configurations
The Tacoma lineup uses XtraCab and Double Cab layouts, with five- and six-foot bed choices. Toyota offers a particularly broad grade range: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. Toyota describes more than 300 possible configurations when grades, engines, drivetrains, transmissions, cab styles, and bed lengths are combined.
The XtraCab and Frontier King Cab serve a similar broad purpose—more cargo utility and occasional rear-seat capacity—but they are not dimensional equivalents. For family use, the five-seat Frontier Crew Cab and Tacoma Double Cab are the relevant choices. Even then, rear-seat comfort, storage, access, and bed length depend on the exact build.

Bed accessories are especially configuration-sensitive. A truck bed cargo net or a model-specific bed net can keep tools, groceries, and smaller loads from sliding around, but buyers must verify model year, cab, bed length, attachment points, and accessory part number. A net designed for a five-foot Tacoma bed should not be assumed to fit a long-bed Frontier.
For long or bulky cargo, a pickup truck bed extender can make either truck more useful. OEM and aftermarket extenders are not universally interchangeable, so confirm the bed length, tailgate design, mounting method, and load rating before ordering. A truck bed mat is another sensible option for protecting the bed floor, but it also requires exact bed measurements rather than a generic “Frontier” or “Tacoma” label.
Off-road capability: Tacoma offers more technology, Frontier keeps it conventional
Frontier PRO-4X
The Frontier PRO-4X is a conventional factory off-road package. Its equipment includes four-wheel drive, Bilstein off-road performance shocks, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and an electronic locking rear differential. This gives the Nissan the core hardware many trail users actually need without requiring a hybrid system or a highly complex suite of electronic controls.
Nissan also offers NISMO and other accessories, including off-road lighting, racks, suspension components, and a rooftop tent. Those options can expand the Frontier’s recreational role, although each accessory adds cost, weight, and sometimes changes the truck’s available payload.
Tacoma TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter
The Tacoma has the broader factory off-road technology portfolio. Depending on grade, it offers an electronically locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, CRAWL Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor, a stabilizer disconnect mechanism, and specialized Bilstein or FOX suspension hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
The TRD Pro and Trailhunter make the Tacoma particularly attractive to buyers who want a factory-developed adventure platform. The Trailhunter is aimed at overlanding use, while the TRD Pro emphasizes more aggressive off-road equipment. Toyota’s accessory and partner ecosystem also includes options associated with brands such as Yakima, ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID, though product availability and fitment should be verified for the exact truck.
This makes the Tacoma the more technically elaborate off-road platform, but not automatically the better truck for every trail or owner. The Frontier PRO-4X’s simpler V6-based layout may appeal to buyers who prefer familiar hardware and fewer specialized systems. There is not enough evidence here to claim that either truck will be universally more reliable or cheaper to repair over the long term.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Infotainment, driver assistance, and safety
The 2024 Tacoma has the stronger technology story. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup, and available equipment includes a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, trailer guidance functions, and grade-specific off-road displays and controls.
The 2025 Frontier adds or expands driver-assistance equipment through Nissan Safety Shield 360. Nissan’s brochure lists automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and high-beam assist. Availability can vary by trim and package, so buyers should confirm the window sticker rather than assume that every feature appears on every Frontier.

Independent safety results should be read separately from equipment lists. IIHS testing for the 2025 Frontier recorded Good ratings in the small-overlap front and updated moderate-overlap front evaluations, an Acceptable side rating, and an Acceptable pedestrian front-crash-prevention rating for the tested systems.
The 2024 Tacoma received a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick award according to contemporary reporting. However, IIHS awards and ratings can depend on test protocols, headlights, cab style, trim, and the organization’s current evaluation criteria. A safety award should not be treated as a universal ranking of every possible Tacoma or Frontier configuration.
Which truck should you buy?
| If your priority is… | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum conventional towing | 2025 Nissan Frontier | Up to 7,150 pounds, versus the Tacoma’s 6,500-pound maximum. |
| Standard V6 horsepower | 2025 Nissan Frontier | Every truck uses a 310-hp 3.8-liter V6. |
| Hybrid torque and output | 2024 Toyota Tacoma | Available i-FORCE MAX produces up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. |

| Simple powertrain lineup | 2025 Nissan Frontier | One familiar V6 and one automatic transmission across the range. |
| Long-bed flexibility | Depends on the exact build | Frontier offers a 73.3-inch Crew Cab long bed; Tacoma offers five- and six-foot bed choices. |
Choose the 2025 Nissan Frontier if…
- You want the highest headline tow rating in this comparison.
- You prefer a naturally aspirated V6 over a turbocharged four-cylinder or hybrid system.
- You want 310 horsepower without paying for a hybrid powertrain upgrade.
- You need the Frontier’s King Cab or Crew Cab and short- or long-bed configuration choices.
- You prefer a less complicated, more conventional midsize pickup.
Choose the 2024 Toyota Tacoma if…
- You want an all-new generation with a more modern cabin and technology package.
- You value hybrid torque and are willing to select the i-FORCE MAX powertrain.
- You want a manual transmission on an eligible non-hybrid model.
- You plan to use factory trail technology such as CRAWL Control, Multi-Terrain Select, or a stabilizer disconnect system.
- You want access to specialized grades such as TRD Pro or Trailhunter.
- You place a high priority on standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
What to check before comparing dealer listings
- Match the configuration. Compare the same cab type, bed length, drivetrain, and transmission before comparing price or fuel economy.
- Read the payload label. Use the exact truck’s payload sticker, especially if you plan to add a canopy, roof rack, recovery equipment, bed accessories, or passengers.
- Confirm the tow rating. Check the exact engine, axle, cab, bed, tires, hitch equipment, and trailer requirements. Do not use the maximum rating from a different trim.
- Price the required equipment. A Tacoma hybrid, four-wheel-drive Frontier, off-road package, trailer brake controller, bed extender, or larger screen can materially change the final price.
- Verify safety equipment on the window sticker. Driver-assistance availability varies by trim and package, and independent crash-test results may apply only to tested configurations.
- Check accessory fitment by part number. Bed nets, mats, extenders, dividers, cleats, hitch components, and racks can differ by model year, cab, and bed length.
Final verdict
The 2025 Frontier and 2024 Tacoma are aimed at overlapping buyers but make different arguments. The Frontier is the better work-tool choice when maximum towing, standard V6 horsepower, and conventional hardware matter most. Its up-to-7,150-pound tow rating is the clearest numerical advantage in the comparison.
The Tacoma is the more compelling adventure and technology choice. Its all-new architecture, available 326-hp hybrid, 465 lb.-ft. of torque, manual-transmission option, standard Safety Sense 3.0, and extensive off-road hardware give it capabilities the Frontier does not match in breadth.
There is no responsible single winner for every buyer. Choose the Frontier for straightforward V6 capability and towing strength; choose the Tacoma for powertrain variety, modern technology, and the most elaborate factory off-road ecosystem. In either case, make the final decision using the exact cab, bed, drivetrain, payload label, tow rating, equipment list, and out-the-door price.
U.S.-market comparison. Specifications are based on manufacturer-listed 2024 Tacoma and 2025 Frontier materials and cited contemporary IIHS information. MSRP figures exclude destination or delivery charges, taxes, registration, options, dealer adjustments, and other fees.
