For the U.S.-market 2025 Nissan Ariya, start with AUTO for everyday comfort, use FAN ONLY when outside air is enough, and select the dedicated defrost control to clear fog or ice. The best setting depends on whether you need heating or cooling, want to conserve energy, or need to clear the windshield.
Control labels and available features can vary by model year and trim, so check your Ariya’s owner’s manual if your controls differ.
1. Set AUTO for everyday comfort
Press the AUTO button or key, then set the temperature you want. The system manages fan speed and airflow distribution as well as cabin temperature, making AUTO the simplest set-and-maintain option.
When AUTO is active, you can manually adjust fan speed or airflow distribution on the climate display. The function you change becomes manual; other functions remain in automatic mode.

2. Choose FAN ONLY when you do not need heating or cooling
FAN ONLY ventilates the cabin without heating or cooling. Nissan says ventilation uses less power and can increase driving range. The 2025 Ariya owner’s manual does not give a specific energy saving or added-mile figure for this setting.
Nissan’s guidance is: “To save power, use the automatic mode or the ventilation mode.” FAN ONLY is useful when outside air is comfortable enough and you only want airflow.

3. Use DRIVER ONLY if you are the only occupant who needs conditioned air
DRIVER ONLY directs airflow mainly from the driver’s side. Nissan describes it as a lower-power-use mode, but does not publish a quantified range improvement. It is a practical choice when there is no front passenger who needs conditioned airflow.
4. Link or separate the front temperature settings
Use SYNC when you and the front passenger want the same temperature. With SYNC active, the driver’s temperature setting controls both front zones. Turn SYNC off to set the driver and passenger sides separately.

5. Clear windshield fog or ice with the defrost control
Select the dedicated defrost control and set the desired temperature. For windshield clearing, the system turns recirculation off so outside air enters. The A/C turns on automatically when outside temperatures are more than slightly above freezing. Nissan also notes that maximum fan speed can help remove exterior ice.
Once the windshield is clear, return to AUTO as soon as practical. If the windows are clear, you can also heat with A/C off by selecting AUTO, turning A/C off, and setting the temperature; Nissan does not recommend this approach if windows fog up.

How the air-intake indicator works
The intake indicator shows which air source is selected: orange means recirculated cabin air, while white means outside air. Intake can be controlled automatically, and the system may switch to recirculation at power-up to improve cooling efficiency. When clearing the windshield, use defrost rather than relying on recirculation.

Heating or cooling demand affects energy use and driving range. Nissan says consumption varies with outside temperature and the selected cabin temperature; asking for more cooling or heating reduces range. The manual does not provide a fixed range gain for AUTO, FAN ONLY, or DRIVER ONLY, so treat their power-use guidance as qualitative rather than a mileage promise.

A visible mist from the vents in hot, humid conditions can occur when air is cooled rapidly. Nissan says this does not indicate a malfunction.
Check which comfort features your Ariya has
Heated seats, climate-controlled seats, and a heated steering wheel depend on the vehicle’s equipment and settings. Nissan lists heated and cooled front seats as available Ariya features, not standard equipment on every vehicle. Consult your vehicle’s manual for the controls and availability on your trim.
