The U.S.-market 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550 trades its previous V8 setup for a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. Mercedes-Benz says the change leaves the G-Class’s key off-road hardware intact: a ladder frame, three mechanical differential locks, LOW RANGE, and a solid rear axle. The published specifications describe the equipment and claimed capability, but do not establish how the new powertrain feels on the road or performs in independent testing.
What the six-cylinder G 550 gets
For the United States, the relevant 2025 model is the G 550. Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2024 launch information specifies a 2,999 cc gasoline inline-six with an exhaust-gas turbocharger and electric auxiliary compressor, paired with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator (ISG). The engine is rated at 443 hp and 413 lb-ft; the ISG can provide up to an additional 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of assistance. Those are manufacturer figures, not independently measured output.
A 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive are standard, with selectable LOW RANGE for low-speed off-road driving. The ISG’s assistance is intended for lower engine speeds, but the published specifications alone do not establish the vehicle’s real-world acceleration, sound, or driving character.
How the U.S. G 550 differs from European six-cylinder models
“Six-cylinder G-Class” does not mean the same engine or output in every market. Mercedes-Benz Germany lists a diesel G 450 d and a gasoline G 500. Neither is the U.S. G 550, and their figures should not be substituted for U.S. specifications.

The German acceleration and consumption figures apply to those German-market models; the consumption ranges are published data, not real-world results. The G 550’s U.S. launch material does not provide matching figures, so a direct performance or efficiency comparison cannot be made from these specifications alone.
Does the six-cylinder G 550 retain the G-Class off-road hardware?
According to Mercedes-Benz USA, it does. The 2025 G 550 retains a ladder frame, three mechanical differential locks, LOW RANGE reduction, and a solid rear axle, with independent front suspension. The continued presence of that hardware addresses the central question raised by the engine change: the manufacturer’s published description does not indicate that the move to six cylinders removes these core off-road systems.

Mercedes-Benz USA publishes the following U.S. G 550 capability figures. They are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent test:
- 9.5 inches of ground clearance between the axles.
- 27.6 inches maximum fording depth.
- 30.6-degree approach angle and 29.9-degree departure angle.
- Up to a 100 percent grade on suitable surfaces and lateral stability up to 35 degrees.
Actual performance on a trail depends on conditions and vehicle setup; these figures do not document a real-world obstacle test.

Mercedes-Benz USA describes modest exterior revisions, including four horizontal grille louvers, revised bumpers, A-pillar trim, and a roof-edge spoiler lip. Inside, the launch information lists MBUX with two 12.3-inch displays and standard Burmester 3D Surround Sound. An OFFROAD COCKPIT and Transparent Hood function are also described; a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch touch displays is available.
The stated standard tire size is 275/55 R 19. An available G PROFESSIONAL Package adds 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. If choosing replacement tires or wheels, confirm the exact model-year fitment, wheel specification, and load rating; the listed size alone is not a recommendation for a particular product.

What do the published price and arrival details establish?
Mercedes-Benz USA said the 2025 G 550 was due at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2024. That is a historical launch statement, not evidence of current stock or availability.
For a separate market and a defined period, Mercedes-Benz UK’s dated table lists the G 450 d AMG Line Premium Plus at £141,065 for April 2, 2025, through March 31, 2026. That is a UK list-price record for the specified derivative, not a U.S. price, current quote, or universal price for the G-Class.

The published material supports a clear conclusion about the specification: the U.S. G 550 has a new-to-this-version six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain, while retaining the core off-road hardware identified by Mercedes-Benz. It does not establish independent acceleration, ride quality, engine sound, real-world fuel economy, or present dealer inventory. Mercedes-Benz’s launch statement called the model a vehicle that “raises the bar for real adventure on and off the road yet again”; that is the company’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.
