It is exceptionally quick, and its drive modes let it shift from quiet, composed SUV to a much sharper machine. But its EPA-listed electric range is just one mile, it weighs more than 5,000 pounds in MotorTrend’s test, and its four-cylinder powertrain cannot reproduce the character of the previous V8. Whether it is worth its high price depends on which side of that trade you value more.
What is the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance?
This is the high-performance, plug-in-hybrid version of Mercedes-Benz’s GLC SUV, sold in the U.S. as an SUV and a separate Coupe body style. Its powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor driving the rear axle. Mercedes-Benz USA rates the system at 671 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque. Rather than prioritizing long electric trips, the small battery supplies electric assistance for performance.
The U.S. SUV uses an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. How fast is the GLC 63 S E Performance?
It is exceptionally quick for a compact luxury SUV. In MotorTrend’s U.S. instrumented test, the GLC 63 S E Performance reached 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, covered the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds at 120.5 mph, and stopped from 60 mph in 107 feet. The speed is not just a launch-control headline. Reviewers describe a noticeable change in character when selecting Race or Sport+: throttle response sharpens, shifts become more assertive, and the exhaust is louder. In ordinary driving, however, the car can feel quiet and composed rather than constantly theatrical. How much electric range does it get?
Edmunds lists one mile of EPA electric range and 31 MPGe combined for the SUV. Its page also lists 20 mpg combined with the battery depleted. MotorTrend’s test page reports 19 mpg city, 21 highway, and 20 combined with the battery depleted, reflecting that publication’s vehicle and test reporting. These figures describe a plug-in hybrid, but not one suited to routine electric-only commuting. The separate GLC 350e is a different model and should not be confused with this AMG. Edmunds lists a 1.1-hour charge time using 240 volts. That specification does not establish the U.S. charging connector or what cable is included, so check the exact vehicle’s U.S. documentation before buying charging hardware. Edmunds’ U.S. specifications
What is it like to drive day to day?
The modes give the GLC a broad range of behavior. In calmer settings, reviewers found it quiet and composed; Sport+ and Race sharpen the response and make the ride firmer. MotorTrend described the shift into Race as especially dramatic, with more immediate throttle response, assertive shifts, and a louder exhaust character.

Hybrid transitions are not identical in every situation. Edmunds’ early first drive reported about a one-second wait for the combustion engine to start when the driver demanded full power in Electric or Comfort. Car and Driver, after a two-day drive in southern Spain, described smooth hybrid transitions in low-speed traffic, but also noted a short pause before full acceleration when cruising and then flooring the accelerator. Is the four-cylinder as good as the old V8?
It depends on what “good” means. The new powertrain is capable and smooth, and its measured acceleration is formidable. But the old V8 is gone, and Edmunds found the new exhaust note less compelling than the previous engine’s character. The electric assistance helps deliver speed and selectable driving behavior; it does not recreate the sound and feel that made the V8 distinctive.

That makes this a real emotional tradeoff, not simply a question of whether the new car is faster. If you prize rapid response and the ability to switch between calm and aggressive modes, the hybrid system has a clear purpose. If engine sound and the V8’s personality are central to the appeal, the four-cylinder may feel like a loss even when the stopwatch says otherwise.

Its compromises are equally central to the decision: the EPA-listed electric range is minimal, MotorTrend’s test vehicle was heavy, the optioned test price rose well above launch MSRP, and the four-cylinder does not deliver the old V8’s sound. The AMG is compelling as a performance-first hybrid, but it is a less natural choice if your priorities are meaningful electric driving or the emotional appeal of a V8.
