The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63 combines a 577-hp twin-turbo V8, genuine low-range off-road hardware and an exceptionally appointed cabin. Its 48-volt system adds mild-hybrid assistance, not electric driving. That mix makes it unusually versatile, but not an economical or sports-car-like SUV: it is tall, top-heavy, thirsty and was priced close to $200,000 at launch.
What changed for the 2025 G 63?
For 2025, the G-Class gained a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and updated technology. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the AMG G 63 at 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Exterior changes were modest, while the technology updates include new off-road displays and driver-assistance features. Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2025 announcement describes the launch-era changes.
The 48-volt integrated starter-generator assists the gasoline engine. It does not turn the G 63 into an electric-drive vehicle, and the powertrain has no electric-only range. The core formula remains a handcrafted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a nine-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz USA’s G 63 model page provides the manufacturer’s powertrain and performance figures; its current content may reflect later model years rather than the 2025 launch specification.
How quick is the 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63?
Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Independent results are quicker, but they are specific to each outlet’s test and should not be treated as one universal figure.

Surface, weather, vehicle load and test procedure can affect acceleration, so the manufacturer estimate is the cleanest specification to use when comparing published claims. The independent numbers show what those publications recorded under their respective test conditions, not a guarantee for every vehicle or driver.
Does the G 63 have real off-road capability?
Yes. Its off-road credentials come from mechanical hardware, not just a rugged design. The G 63 uses a ladder-frame chassis, permanent all-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case with low range and three locking differentials. For 2025, Mercedes also introduced the Offroad Cockpit, which presents vehicle-position information, and a Transparent Hood camera view that uses the 360-degree camera system to help show terrain near the front of the vehicle. These are visibility and information aids; they complement rather than replace careful driving and the underlying drivetrain hardware. Driver-assistance and cabin features can vary by market and configuration.
What is it like on the road?
The G 63 is fast, but its shape and proportions still matter. Car and Driver notes top-heavy handling; the tall, substantial body does not behave like a low-slung performance SUV. Its adaptive suspension is intended to balance ride comfort and body control, not erase the effects of its height and mass.

Mercedes-AMG describes adaptive, electronically controlled damping with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings. MotorTrend describes the Active Ride Control dampers as hydraulically interconnected and says they replace mechanical anti-roll bars. The accounts describe the suspension at different levels; exact equipment and naming can depend on market and configuration, so confirm the U.S. specification for a particular vehicle rather than assuming every 2025 G 63 has the same setup.

The cabin pairs the G-Class’s upright, utilitarian layout with extensive technology and luxury appointments. Mercedes-AMG describes MBUX, augmented-reality navigation and an off-road display. Depending on configuration, listed luxury options include Nappa leather, multicontour seats and Burmester 3D surround sound. Those descriptions do not establish that every feature is standard on every U.S.-market 2025 vehicle; check the vehicle’s equipment list.

What are the ownership trade-offs?
Fuel use and purchase price are substantial compromises. Car and Driver lists U.S. estimates of 14 mpg city, 16 highway and 15 combined for the 2025 G 63, and identifies premium-fuel consumption and price among its drawbacks. These are published estimates, not results from this article’s testing.
For historical U.S. price context, MotorTrend reported $187,250 for its 2025 test vehicle. That is a launch-era test-vehicle price, not a current quote, transaction price or verified listing for a 2025 vehicle. Mercedes-Benz USA’s model page has moved on to later model-year content, so current 2025 inventory and pricing require a separate check.

How does the G 63 fit within the G-Class range?
The G 63 is the V8 performance choice. The G 550 uses a hybrid inline-six, while the G 580 with EQ Technology is electric. Those powertrains make the choice less about a simple ranking and more about what the buyer values: V8 performance, a different gasoline-hybrid setup or electric propulsion. The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive ranking of the G 63 against every competing luxury SUV.
