The 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV pairs a 323-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain with a premium two-row cabin and confident handling. Its appeal depends on a practical detail: Mazda estimates up to 26 miles of electric driving, so regular charging and trip lengths that fit that range make the strongest ownership case. Without frequent charging, much of the plug-in advantage is harder to use.
What is the 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV?
The CX-70 PHEV is a two-row midsize SUV that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery. Mazda lists combined output at 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, with recommended premium fuel. These are Mazda North American Operations’ U.S. specifications in its February 2024 launch announcement: Mazda’s 2025 CX-70 pricing and packaging announcement.

The plug-in system can provide electric-only driving when the battery is charged; the gasoline engine remains available for longer trips. That flexibility is useful, but the CX-70 PHEV is not a substitute for a long-range electric vehicle: the stated electric range is modest enough that the match between your daily driving and charging routine matters more than the headline power figure.
How far can the CX-70 PHEV go on electric power?
Mazda advertises up to 26 miles of electric range and up to 56 MPGe for the 2025 CX-70 PHEV. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not a guarantee of what every driver will achieve. Temperature, driving conditions, speed and use of cabin climate controls can affect real-world electric range.

Car and Driver reported 27 MPGe observed in its test of the 2025 model. That is one outlet’s test result, not a replacement for Mazda’s published estimate or a prediction for every owner: Car and Driver’s CX-70 review.
To judge whether the electric range is enough, compare it with your routine rather than an occasional long journey. If most daily trips fit within the available charge and you can plug in reliably, you may be able to cover a meaningful share of local driving electrically. If your regular round trip is substantially longer, or charging is sporadic, the vehicle will rely more often on its gasoline engine.
How long does it take to charge?
Mazda says Level 2 AC charging can bring the battery from 20% to 80% in 1.5 hours under the conditions it specifies. The brand’s CX-70 PHEV product page provides its published charging information. This is a partial-charge time, not a claim that a depleted battery will be fully charged in 1.5 hours.
A routine of plugging in at home is central to using the plug-in system as intended. Mazda identifies Qmerit as an approved or recommended U.S. home-charger installation partner; availability and current service terms should be confirmed with the provider. Before purchasing charging equipment, verify that your home electrical service and the selected charger are compatible with the vehicle. A compatible Level 2 home EV charger is the relevant equipment category; the cited Mazda material does not establish a particular charger model or whether charging equipment is included with every vehicle.
Is the CX-70 PHEV good to drive?
Independent test results point to brisk acceleration, but reviewers differed on the details of powertrain refinement and ride comfort. Their measurements and impressions apply to the vehicles they tested, not every CX-70 PHEV.
Acceleration and handling
Car and Driver recorded 5.9 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in its test and praised the SUV’s agile handling. It also identified a powertrain drawback: “It provides agile handling for a mid-size SUV, and our main quibble with the plug-in-hybrid powertrain is the occasionally loud droning of the gasoline engine.”

- Compact Size: Approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length, making it easy to display and play with anywhere
- Diecast mini car: Handcrafted with metal for durability and long-lasting play
- Mazda CX-5 design: Detailed and authentic to the original vehicle with realistic features
- Red color: Vibrant and eye-catching finish that stands out in any collection
- Unisex appeal: Suitable for children of all genders who enjoy toy vehicles
Edmunds measured 6.9 seconds to 60 mph. Its reviewers praised the steering weight and cornering control, but reported a low-speed transmission stumble and jerky shifts. Edmunds also recorded 24.3 mpg in mixed driving on gasoline power alone in its tested vehicle. That gas-only result is distinct from Mazda’s 56-MPGe manufacturer figure, which describes the plug-in vehicle’s efficiency rating: Edmunds’ 2025 Mazda CX-70 review.
Ride and everyday refinement
Edmunds described the ride as firmer than most. Car and Driver’s report of occasional gasoline-engine droning and Edmunds’ low-speed shift concerns are useful points to check on a test drive, especially in stop-and-go traffic and on rough pavement. They are outlet-specific observations rather than a guarantee that every driver will notice the same behavior.
What are the trims and prices?
Mazda’s February 2024 U.S. launch announcement listed the PHEV in Premium and Premium Plus trims at the starting MSRPs below. These are historical launch prices, not current dealer offers or a statement of today’s inventory, incentives or transaction prices.
Rank #4
| 2025 CX-70 PHEV trim | U.S. launch starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| Premium | $54,400 |
| Premium Plus | $57,450 |
Both figures come from Mazda North American Operations’ February 2024 U.S. pricing announcement. When comparing the trims or shopping the current market, check the specific vehicle’s equipment and ask dealers for current pricing; the launch figures alone do not establish what a buyer will pay now.

Mazda lists a maximum tow rating of 3,500 pounds when the CX-70 PHEV is equipped with Mazda Genuine Towing accessories. The accessory condition applies to the rating; do not treat 3,500 pounds as an unconditional capacity. Confirm the vehicle’s equipment and follow Mazda’s towing guidance for the specific setup before hauling a trailer.
Who should consider the CX-70 PHEV?
The CX-70 PHEV makes the most sense for a shopper who wants a premium two-row SUV, can charge at home consistently, and typically drives daily distances that make use of its stated electric range. Its strong combined output and the flexibility of a gasoline engine support longer trips, while reviewers’ acceleration and handling impressions give it a more engaging profile than a purely utility-focused choice.

It is a less compelling fit if you cannot charge routinely, expect most driving to exceed the electric range, or put a high priority on uniformly smooth low-speed shifts and a soft ride. A test drive that includes both city-speed traffic and rougher roads can help you judge the transmission and firmness Edmunds reported, while listening for the engine droning Car and Driver noted.
Compare the actual trim equipment and current price, your typical daily mileage, home-charging practicality, ride comfort and the towing setup you need. No single range, test result or launch price settles those trade-offs for every buyer.
