The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid pairs a 219-hp hybrid system based on Toyota’s hybrid technology with standard electric all-wheel drive and an EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined. Independent tests show that real-world results vary: Car and Driver recorded 34 mpg on its 75-mph highway route, while Tom’s Guide averaged 40.8 mpg over a 260-mile test. The trade-offs reported include some CVT-related engine droning, less nimble cornering than the gas CX-50, and limited rear-seat space.
What is the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid?
The Hybrid joined the CX-50 lineup for model year 2025. Mazda describes its system as a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, a hybrid battery and three electric motors, paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT). The system produces 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque on regular 87-octane fuel, and electric all-wheel drive is standard. Mazda’s 2025 CX-50 announcement provides the manufacturer specifications.
The hybrid system is based on the Toyota Hybrid System. Car and Driver describes its powertrain as borrowed from the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, making the RAV4 a useful reference for the system’s origins, though not a substitute for a direct, same-route comparison of the two vehicles.
What is the fuel economy of the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid?
Mazda cites an EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined for the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid. For context, Mazda lists the nonhybrid 2025 CX-50 2.5 S at 25 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. Mazda also says the Hybrid offers over 100 miles of additional driving range versus the 2.5 S, based on the same calculation methodology as fueleconomy.gov. Those are manufacturer figures and a manufacturer comparison, not a promise of an individual owner’s range. Mazda’s CX-50 Hybrid fuel-economy information explains its claim.

| Figure | Result | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Mazda / EPA estimate | 38 mpg combined | Manufacturer-cited EPA estimate for the Hybrid |
| Car and Driver | 34 mpg | Its result on a 75-mph highway fuel-economy route |
| Tom’s Guide | 40.8 mpg | Its reported average over 260 miles in a Premium Plus test vehicle |
The road-test numbers are outlet-specific observations, not equivalent EPA ratings. Route, speed, conditions and driving style differ, so they are best read as examples of possible test outcomes rather than as a single expected real-world figure. Tom’s Guide also lists the tested Premium Plus at 39 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined; the cited combined estimate matches Mazda’s figure. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 test reports its 260-mile result.
How does the CX-50 Hybrid drive?
Car and Driver recorded 7.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in its testing. It describes the ride and handling as generally similar to the nonhybrid CX-50, but says the CVT can make the engine drone and the Hybrid’s extra weight makes it less nimble through corners. The outlet also found the ride pleasant. These are that publication’s test result and driving impressions, not Mazda specifications. Car and Driver’s CX-50 Hybrid review gives its test findings.
Tom’s Guide describes a dedicated EV mode, but reports that its use is limited by acceleration and speed conditions. It should not be understood as an unrestricted electric-only driving mode. Its cited test vehicle was a Premium Plus, and its equipment observations—including a panoramic roof, 19-inch wheels, ventilated seats, power-folding side mirrors and an auto-dimming rearview mirror—apply to that trim, not automatically to every CX-50 Hybrid.
Is the CX-50 Hybrid comfortable and practical?
Car and Driver characterizes the front seats as comfortable and supportive, while judging rear-seat space below average for the segment. That matters if the vehicle will regularly carry adult passengers in back; a test drive with the intended occupants is more informative than relying on a trim’s feature list alone. The available findings do not establish a cargo-volume comparison with rival models.

How much can the CX-50 Hybrid tow?
Mazda specifies a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds when the Hybrid is equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories. Car and Driver likewise reports a 1,500-pound maximum and identifies an optional hitch and wiring hookup package. Before towing, confirm the accessory fitment and current Mazda guidance for the exact vehicle, and keep the total load within the rated limit. Mazda’s model-year announcement is the source for the manufacturer’s towing condition.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the closest reference for the CX-50 Hybrid’s system because Mazda says its hybrid setup is based on Toyota’s. That shared technical lineage does not establish identical performance, efficiency or cabin space. Car and Driver identifies the Honda CR-V Hybrid, Kia Sportage Hybrid and Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid as category rivals, but the figures available here do not support a current price ranking or a direct, controlled comparison among them.

For a useful shopping comparison, check each model’s official combined fuel-economy rating alongside independent results from comparable routes, then evaluate rear-seat and cargo usefulness, ride and powertrain noise, and the specific equipment on the trims you would actually buy. Towing should be compared using the rating and accessory requirements for each exact configuration.
