Verdict: The 2025 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is not the newest, quickest, most efficient, or most technologically advanced compact luxury sport sedan. It is something increasingly rare: a rear-wheel-drive sedan built around a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8. That engine gives the IS 500 a smooth, linear response and an unmistakable character that newer turbocharged and electrified rivals do not always replicate.
The trade-off is an aging platform. The IS 500 has a tight back seat, modest cargo capacity, dated infotainment, a relaxed rather than urgent transmission, and merely competitive acceleration. In other words, newer cars are objectively better in several measurable ways—but not necessarily better if sound, throttle response, comfort, and mechanical simplicity matter most.
What is actually new for 2025?
The 2025 Lexus IS 500 is a newer model year, not a new-generation car. The current IS traces back to the third generation introduced for 2014, although Lexus has updated its equipment and styling over time. The basic body, cabin architecture, rear-wheel-drive layout, and V8 powertrain remain familiar.
Lexus makes power-folding mirrors standard for 2025. The more conspicuous update is a limited Special Appearance Package for the IS 500 F SPORT Performance Premium. Lexus announced production limited to 180 units. It includes:

That package makes the car more distinctive, but it does not make the IS 500 mechanically newer. There is no substantive powertrain revision for 2025. The central product remains the same naturally aspirated V8 sedan that made the IS 500 unusual in the first place.

These are U.S.-market figures. Equipment, pricing, and destination charges can vary by configuration and region, so the vehicle’s window sticker remains the final authority for a particular car.
The naturally aspirated V8 is the reason to buy one
The IS 500’s 5.0-liter V8 produces 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. It sends that output through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels. In a market increasingly dominated by turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, hybrids, and battery-electric powertrains, that combination is the car’s defining feature.
Its appeal is not simply the peak horsepower figure. Road tests from Edmunds describe the engine as smooth, linear, and strong through its rev range. With no turbochargers to build boost, the throttle response is immediate and predictable, and the power delivery does not have the artificial sensation of waiting for a turbocharged engine to catch up. The engine’s sound and willingness to build toward the upper rev range give the IS 500 an emotional advantage over many newer alternatives.
That does not mean it is the fastest sedan in the category. Lexus claims 4.4 seconds from zero to 60 mph. Car and Driver recorded 4.3 seconds in instrumented testing, while Edmunds recorded 4.8 seconds. Those results are not a contradiction or a single definitive measurement. Test surface, temperature, tires, launch technique, vehicle variation, and instrumentation can all affect the result.
The useful conclusion is that the IS 500 is properly quick, but its acceleration does not match what some newer competitors deliver from similar or lower price points. Car and Driver placed it behind cars such as the BMW M3, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, and Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance in acceleration testing. The Lexus wins its argument with response and character rather than with a drag-strip number.
The transmission is the weak link
The eight-speed automatic is smooth enough for normal driving, but Edmunds criticized its shifts as mediocre and its gearing as longer than ideal for a performance sedan. That matters because the V8 itself is eager and responsive. The engine feels like it wants to be used, while the transmission can take some of the urgency out of the experience.
This is one of the clearest ways the age of the IS package becomes apparent. Newer performance sedans tend to offer quicker gear changes, more sophisticated launch strategies, and more immediate responses to manual shift commands. The IS 500 is less clinical and less aggressive. Some buyers will find that relaxed behavior pleasant on the road; others will regard it as a missed opportunity.
Ride and handling: fast, composed, and not a track specialist
The IS 500 is best understood as a fast road car rather than a track-focused super-sedan. Edmunds reports nimble and secure handling, balanced chassis behavior, quick steering, and a taut but tolerable ride. Car and Driver likewise emphasizes that the ride remains comfortable and composed instead of becoming punishing when the pace rises.
That balance is a genuine strength. The IS 500 can be entertaining on a winding road without demanding the compromises associated with a highly focused track car. It is also easier to live with than a sedan that treats every commute as a qualifying lap.
However, it would be inaccurate to call the chassis class-leading. Consumer Reports’ broader assessment of the 2025 IS describes reasonably contained body roll but not especially agile behavior. Its steering can feel vague and not particularly communicative. Those observations temper the more favorable road-test impressions.
The most defensible synthesis is that the Lexus is enjoyable, stable, and composed, but it does not deliver the razor-sharp response expected from the newest high-performance compact sedans. Edmunds also noted brake fade and a slow transmission as limitations during track use. A buyer planning frequent track days should look closely at the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, BMW M3, or another car engineered more explicitly for repeated hard running.
A comfortable front cabin with an aging technology package
The IS 500’s front seats are among its strongest everyday features. Edmunds and Car and Driver both identify the front seating as comfortable, and the ride helps the sedan feel more relaxed than its power output might suggest. The interior uses quality materials and retains a relatively traditional, driver-oriented layout rather than making the touchscreen the entire personality of the car.
That traditional approach has a downside in 2025. The cabin design and technology feel old next to newer BMW, Cadillac, Genesis, and Mercedes-Benz interiors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are included, which reduces the impact of Lexus’s native interface, but the overall presentation is not at the leading edge of the segment.
Depending on configuration, the IS 500 can be equipped with a 10.3-inch display and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Those features improve the ownership experience, but they do not change the underlying age of the dashboard or the car’s packaging.
Rear-seat and cargo compromises
The IS 500 works best for one or two adults. Its rear seat is smaller than what several newer luxury sedans provide, and the limited legroom becomes important if the car is expected to carry adults regularly. The 11-cubic-foot trunk is usable for ordinary errands but not generous for the class.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is more than a specification-sheet disadvantage. The compact dimensions and tight rear accommodation are part of the daily trade-off for choosing an older, relatively compact V8 sedan. A buyer who needs a family-friendly back seat or substantial luggage capacity should not assume that four doors automatically make the IS 500 practical enough.
Fuel economy and ownership costs
The EPA rates the 2025 IS 500 at 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. It has a 17.4-gallon fuel tank, and premium fuel is an important part of the ownership budget. Edmunds recorded 21.9 mpg on its testing route, but that is an individual test result and should not replace the EPA rating when estimating costs.
Fuel consumption is one area where newer turbocharged and electrified competitors have a clear advantage. The Lexus’s naturally aspirated V8 is the point of the car, but buyers should be comfortable paying for the fuel required to enjoy it.
For U.S. buyers, Edmunds reports a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also reports four years of roadside assistance and first-year service coverage. Those benefits strengthen the Lexus ownership proposition, although the available research does not establish long-term reliability or maintenance costs for this exact 2025 model.

Insurance, tires, fuel, and local service rates can change the ownership calculation substantially. A 472-hp rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan is also sensitive to tire condition and tire choice, particularly in wet or cold weather. Prospective owners should get an insurance quote and check replacement-tire pricing before committing.
Protecting an enthusiast car
Owners who park the IS 500 outdoors may want to consider a properly fitted cover, especially for a limited-color car such as the Flare Yellow Special Appearance Package. A fitted car cover for the 2025 Lexus IS 500 can be a sensible storage accessory, but fitment, material, seller, return policy, and whether the cover is appropriate for indoor or outdoor use should be verified before purchase. This is an ownership suggestion, not a claim of Lexus approval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pricing is configuration-dependent
Published prices for the 2025 IS 500 do not line up perfectly across the available sources. Car and Driver lists $65,315 for an IS 500 F SPORT Performance Premium RWD specification page. Edmunds lists $60,815 for its most popular trim and shows a range of $59,520 to $64,020 on its review page.
Those figures may represent different configurations, destination-fee treatment, or pricing snapshots. They should not be presented as one universal transaction price. Verify the exact window sticker, destination charge, dealer-installed options, and current incentives for the specific vehicle under consideration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe value proposition is therefore conditional. The IS 500 gives the buyer a naturally aspirated V8 and a Lexus ownership proposition at a price where those traits are increasingly unusual. But Edmunds concludes that competing cars can offer more performance, efficiency, technology, and space for equal or less money.
If objective capability is the priority, the Lexus is difficult to defend as the segment leader. If the buyer considers the V8 itself the product—and the sedan merely its comfortable, discreet wrapper—the value argument becomes much stronger.
How the IS 500 compares with its alternatives
The most relevant alternatives include the BMW M340i, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, BMW M3, Mercedes-AMG C43 and C63 variants, Acura TLX Type S, and Genesis G70 3.3T. They do not all pursue the same mission, so a simple ranking would obscure the real decision.
| If you prioritize… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Natural engine response, V8 sound, and rarity | Lexus IS 500 | Its naturally aspirated V8 is the feature newer rivals generally cannot duplicate. |
| Technology, efficiency, and everyday packaging | BMW M340i or a similar newer turbocharged sedan | Newer competitors generally offer more modern interfaces, stronger efficiency, and better all-around packaging. |
| Track pace, braking, transmission response, and acceleration | Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing or BMW M3 | These cars are more explicitly engineered around high-performance driving and repeated hard use. |
| All-weather traction | A competing AWD performance sedan, or an AWD IS 300/IS 350 | The IS 500 is rear-wheel drive only; all-wheel drive is available on lower IS variants, not the V8 model. |
| Comfort with a distinctive powertrain | Lexus IS 500 | Its ride, front seats, and linear V8 delivery make it more relaxed than its performance branding suggests. |
The available evidence supports a general performance gap between the Lexus and several newer rivals, but it does not establish one standardized 2025 comparison test covering every model listed above. Exact rankings can change with trim, tires, transmission, weather, and test procedure.

The ideal buyer is an enthusiast who wants a special engine in a relatively discreet four-door car. That buyer is willing to accept an older infotainment system, a small back seat, mediocre fuel economy, and acceleration that is competitive rather than dominant.
The IS 500 makes particular sense for someone who values:
- A naturally aspirated V8 and its linear throttle response
- Engine sound and mechanical character over maximum test numbers
- A comfortable ride for daily road use
- Rear-wheel-drive behavior and a conventional automatic transmission
- A lower-key alternative to more aggressive German and American sport sedans
- The Lexus warranty and ownership experience
It is the wrong choice for a buyer who wants the latest cabin interface, maximum rear-seat space, all-weather traction, best-in-class track performance, fastest acceleration, or leading fuel economy. It is also a poor fit for someone who dislikes paying premium-fuel prices or who expects a performance sedan’s transmission and brakes to feel optimized for track work.
Final assessment: the old parts are both weakness and appeal
The 2025 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is a study in conflicting priorities. Its platform is old enough to limit rear-seat space, technology, transmission response, and outright performance. Those shortcomings are real, and newer rivals do measurable things better.
Recommended Free Tools
But the same lack of radical modernization preserves the qualities that make the Lexus distinctive. There is no turbo lag to manage, no hybrid system changing the character of the power delivery, and no attempt to make the car feel like a digital performance appliance. The V8 delivers its power in a smooth, progressive way, while the suspension and front seats make the car comfortable enough for ordinary roads.
Choose the IS 500 if the naturally aspirated V8 is the reason you are shopping. Choose something newer if technology, space, efficiency, all-weather capability, or track pace matters more. The Lexus is not proof that older is always better. It is proof that the newest measurable improvement is not always the improvement an enthusiast values most.
Specifications in this review are based on Lexus’s 2025 announcement and brochure information. Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2025 Lexus IS 500 a new-generation car?
No. The 2025 model year adds standard power-folding mirrors and offers a limited Special Appearance Package, but the IS remains part of the third generation introduced for 2014. Its 5.0-liter V8, eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel-drive layout, and basic compact-sedan architecture carry over.

How fast is the 2025 Lexus IS 500?
Lexus claims 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Car and Driver recorded 4.3 seconds, while Edmunds recorded 4.8 seconds. The variation reflects different test conditions, tires, launch methods, and instrumentation. The IS 500 is quick, but it is not the acceleration leader among current performance sedans.
Does the 2025 IS 500 have all-wheel drive?
No. The IS 500 is rear-wheel drive only. All-wheel drive is available on lower IS 300 and IS 350 variants, but not on the V8-powered IS 500.
Is the Lexus IS 500 practical as a daily driver?
It is reasonably usable for two adults and ordinary errands. The front seats are comfortable and the ride is composed, but the rear seat is tight and the trunk provides only 11 cubic feet of cargo space. Buyers needing frequent rear-seat or luggage capacity should consider a roomier rival.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2025 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is not the smartest choice for maximum speed, modern technology, fuel economy, or space. It is the compelling choice for the buyer who wants a naturally aspirated V8, linear response, distinctive sound, rear-wheel-drive character, and a comfortable Lexus sedan—and who accepts that the rest of the package is showing its age.
