The Station Wagon encloses its passenger and cargo space; the five-seat Quartermaster adds a pickup bed. In Car and Driver’s independent 2025 Quartermaster test, it reached 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, and tester Dan Edmunds described its steering as heavy and slow to react. Its appeal is clearest when the pavement ends—not when you need a quick, easy-driving daily vehicle.
Station Wagon or Quartermaster: what changes?
The Grenadier Station Wagon is the enclosed utility vehicle; the Quartermaster is its five-seat, double-cab pickup counterpart. INEOS says the Quartermaster was developed alongside the Station Wagon and shares most of its architecture, but uses a box-section ladder frame 305 mm longer.
The pickup bed measures 1,564 mm long by 1,619 mm wide and is sized to take a standard 1,200 by 800 mm Euro pallet, according to INEOS’s 2023 launch specification. That makes the Quartermaster the more natural fit for bulky, dirty or outdoor gear that belongs in an open load bay. The Station Wagon is the enclosed alternative when keeping passengers and cargo inside the body matters more.
Quartermaster load-bed details
- Four tie-down rings are standard, with utility rails available as an option.
- INEOS lists a 400 W power take-off among the bed-related features.
- The manufacturer says the open tailgate can support 225 kg.
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent payload or towing test results. INEOS’s launch release lists 760 kg payload and 3,500 kg towing for the Quartermaster. Car and Driver’s US specifications page instead gives maximums of 1,840 lb payload and 7,716 lb towing. Treat the figures as source- and market-specific rather than interchangeable ratings; confirm the exact vehicle’s rating and equipment before hauling or towing.

What powers the 2025 Quartermaster?
The Quartermaster combines a BMW 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with an eight-speed ZF automatic, permanent four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. INEOS’s 2023 launch release described petrol and diesel engine options, while Car and Driver’s 2025 US review and specifications focus on the gasoline inline-six. Its instrumented test reported 281 hp and 331 lb-ft; the publication’s specifications page lists 332 lb-ft. Those are Car and Driver’s two different published torque figures, so they should not be silently combined into a single definitive number.
The transmission is automatic-only in Car and Driver’s US-market specifications. A locking center differential is standard; front and rear differential lockers are optional. This is an intentionally conventional drivetrain, with a transfer case and solid axles rather than a road-first crossover layout.

Off-road equipment is the Quartermaster’s strongest case
INEOS’s launch specification lists 264 mm of ground clearance and an 800 mm wading depth for the Quartermaster. The company also described its approach, breakover and departure angles as “unrivalled in its sector”—a manufacturer’s comparative claim, not an independently established class ranking.
Car and Driver’s 2025 test gives the Quartermaster a 26.2-degree breakover angle and a ramp travel index of 555 for the tested vehicle. That test truck had the Rough Pack, including front and rear lockers and BFGoodrich KO2 tires, so its performance should not be treated as a result for every configuration. Edmunds reported composed driving in loose sand and praised its trail behavior.

INEOS says its development program used 130 vehicles and covered 1.1 million miles. Those are manufacturer-reported program totals, not a third-party durability study or a prediction of long-term reliability.
How does the Quartermaster drive on pavement?
Car and Driver Technical Editor Dan Edmunds measured 0–60 mph in 8.1 seconds in the tested Quartermaster. He described the steering as heavy and slow to react, with substantial input needed to keep the truck straight. Those are the impressions and result from his individual test, not a claim that every driver or vehicle will behave identically.

Edmunds found the steering shortcomings less consequential in loose sand, where the truck felt composed. The contrast is central to the Quartermaster’s character: the traits that suit slow, deliberate off-road driving do not make for light, quick responses on a paved commute. The same test recorded a 215-foot stop from 70 mph and 0.59 g on the skidpad for its Rough Pack-equipped truck; those figures add context to the road compromises, but they describe that tested configuration.

Car and Driver identifies the Jeep Gladiator as the Quartermaster’s closest natural rival in one specifications discussion. That is a useful starting point, not proof the two pickups are direct equivalents. The meaningful comparison depends on what the buyer values:

The available official INEOS US price-list document cited here is for MY27 and dated May 2026, not MY25. It cannot establish today’s price for a 2025 Quartermaster: actual asking prices depend on the specific vehicle, trim, options and dealer. Who should consider the Grenadier family?
The Quartermaster makes sense if
- You want a five-seat pickup with a bed for equipment that is awkward, dirty or better carried outside the cabin.
- Solid axles, a two-speed transfer case and available front and rear lockers are priorities.
- You value its distinctive, deliberately utilitarian design and are willing to accept slower acceleration and heavier steering on the road.
The Station Wagon may suit you better if
- You want the Grenadier’s enclosed passenger-and-cargo body rather than an open pickup bed.
- Your use case centers on carrying people and gear inside one vehicle body.
INEOS CEO Lynn Calder called the Quartermaster “truly rugged and unbeatable off-road” at its 2023 debut. That is promotional language. The more useful evidence for a buyer is the hardware, the manufacturer’s stated dimensions and limits, and the independent test’s specific results—with the Rough Pack configuration kept in view.
