The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is a large, three-row electric SUV that delivered 2.7 to 3.0 miles per kilowatt-hour in one near-freezing first-drive route, according to MotorTrend. Those figures are useful real-world examples, not EPA ratings or a promise of what every driver will achieve. The original first-drive review was published March 5, 2025, but it covered the vehicle as a 2026 model; Hyundai’s current U.S. overview lists 2026 EPA-estimated range by trim.
How efficient is the Hyundai Ioniq 9?
Hyundai specifies a 110.3-kWh high-voltage battery for the IONIQ 9. Battery capacity is not the same as usable capacity or a direct prediction of driving range, so compare official range ratings and measured consumption separately.
For the 2026 U.S. model, Hyundai Motor America’s overview lists EPA-estimated range by trim group as follows:

What one first drive recorded
In MotorTrend’s March 5, 2025 first drive, Angus MacKenzie drove a Performance AWD in South Korea. The vehicle averaged 3.0 mi/kWh over a 259-mile leg and finished with 18% battery. On a faster 251-mile return in temperatures hovering around freezing, it averaged 2.7 mi/kWh and reached the hotel with 10% battery and a displayed 28 miles of remaining range. Speed, weather, route, and vehicle configuration all affect consumption; these legs are not standardized ratings.
A later test provides another reference point
Tom’s Guide reviewer John Velasco reported a 3 mi/kWh average over 413.6 miles in a 2026 Calligraphy Design during a week-long test. Within that drive, the review recorded 3.6 mi/kWh over a 37.1-mile mostly-highway segment and 3.8 mi/kWh over a 5.3-mile mostly-local segment. Those are the reviewer’s readings on those routes, not official economy figures.

Global projections are not U.S. ratings
Hyundai’s global technical announcement gives a projected WLTP range of up to 620 km and targeted consumption of 194 Wh/km for a Long-Range RWD model on 19-inch wheels. WLTP is a different test cycle from the U.S. EPA procedure, and Hyundai labels these global figures projected or targeted. They should not be treated as U.S. EPA ratings.
How long does the Ioniq 9 take to charge?
Hyundai says the IONIQ 9 can charge from 10% to 80% in 24 minutes using a 350-kW charger under optimal conditions. The vehicle supports 400V/800V multi-charging capability, but the quoted time is not universal: the charger must be capable of supplying suitable power, and charging conditions affect the result. A charger’s advertised peak output alone does not guarantee that a vehicle will sustain that rate throughout a session.

What home charging looks like
In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test, the included charger was used with a standard 120V outlet. Velasco reported adding 34 miles over 11.6 hours, or 2.93 miles per hour, and recommended a Level 2 home charger. That is one vehicle-and-outlet observation, not a guaranteed charging rate for every home. A Level 2 setup is a more practical route for regular overnight charging, subject to the home’s electrical capacity and installation requirements.

The IONIQ 9 is offered as a six- or seven-passenger vehicle, depending on configuration. MotorTrend’s first-drive account describes a spacious, flat-floored cabin and flexible seating and cargo arrangements. That flexibility matters for family use: check the exact seating configuration and how it affects the passenger and cargo space you need.

The launch-announcement range for the Long-Range RWD is a historical projection; the current 2026 U.S. trim figures above are the more useful reference for shopping by model year. More driven wheels and performance do not automatically mean better efficiency, so compare the exact trim’s current EPA rating with the power and traction you want.
What did the first-drive review say about the ride and cabin?
MacKenzie described the steering as nicely weighted and the transition from regenerative braking to mechanical braking as seamless. He also noted occasional rear-axle mechanical noise over sharp transverse bumps. With the third row empty and not folded flat, he reported jitters from those seats. These are impressions from his drive, not a guarantee that every road or load will produce the same behavior.

What to check before choosing one
- Use the right range figure: compare EPA estimates for the exact U.S. model year, trim, and drivetrain. Keep WLTP projections and individual road-test results in separate categories.
- Match charging to your routine: the 24-minute claim is for a 10–80% session on a 350-kW charger under optimal conditions; at home, consider whether a Level 2 circuit and charger are feasible.
- Choose the layout you will use: confirm whether the vehicle is configured for six or seven passengers and assess the cargo space with your usual seats in place.
- Weigh performance against range: compare RWD and AWD trim ratings rather than assuming a powertrain’s motor count tells you its efficiency.
- Verify local details: U.S. trim names and ratings differ from other markets. Hyundai Motor UK’s July 2025 release, for example, describes a UK range with Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD, and Performance AWD, as well as equipment including a heat pump, manually selectable battery conditioning, and an internal three-pin V2L plug. Do not assume that UK specification applies to a U.S. vehicle.
