For the U.S. 2025 model year, the Hyundai IONIQ 5’s clearest upgrades are a larger battery, more EPA-estimated range on several trims, a native NACS charging port, and a new adventure-oriented XRT trim. The headline figure is 318 miles, but that applies only to select long-range rear-wheel-drive versions—not the entire lineup. Whether the update makes the IONIQ 5 a better choice depends on the trim, charging access, and the controls and utility you value.
What changed for the 2025 U.S. IONIQ 5?
Hyundai’s U.S. 2025 lineup adds battery capacity, a native NACS charge port, revised equipment and the XRT grade. The Standard Range battery grows from 58.0 to 63 kWh, while the Long Range pack increases from 77.4 to 84 kWh, according to Hyundai’s November 8, 2024 announcement. The native NACS port expands charging options, while Hyundai includes a CCS adapter with the 2025 vehicle. NACS does not mean every Tesla Supercharger works with the car: station generation and how charging is started matter. The XRT is a separate equipment-focused choice, with all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, a modest lift, terrain modes and front tow hooks.
How far does each 2025 IONIQ 5 trim go?
Hyundai’s EPA-estimated ranges vary by battery, drivetrain and trim. Its listed maximum is 318 miles for long-range rear-wheel-drive SE, SEL and Limited versions; it is not a lineup-wide figure. These are Hyundai’s published U.S. figures for the 2025 model year. For a buyer comparing trims, the practical question is whether the additional range of a rear-wheel-drive long-range version matters more than the traction and equipment of an AWD model.
What does the NACS port mean for charging?
The 2025 IONIQ 5’s native NACS port provides access to compatible NACS chargers, and Hyundai includes a CCS adapter for CCS fast-charging networks. Compatibility is not universal. Hyundai’s owner FAQ lists V3 and V4 Tesla Superchargers as compatible and older V1 and V2 units as incompatible; for the native-NACS 2025 IONIQ 5, the FAQ says charging at a Supercharger must be initiated in Tesla’s app. Hyundai lists a 125-kW maximum at a Supercharger “at this time.” Check current station details and app instructions before relying on a charger on a route. Hyundai’s estimated charging times
Hyundai estimates about 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% using a CCS charger rated above 250 kW. Its announcement lists 24 minutes for the 63-kWh battery and 30 minutes for the 84-kWh battery for a 10–80% charge on NACS. With a 50-kW charger, charging takes longer. For home charging, Hyundai estimates 5 hours 40 minutes from 10% to 100% for the 63-kWh battery and 7 hours 20 minutes for the 84-kWh battery using 240-volt Level 2 charging. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed session times: available station output, temperature, state of charge, battery condition and preconditioning affect actual speed. The charger’s rated output alone does not guarantee that the vehicle will receive that power.
What is different about the XRT?
The XRT prioritizes adventure-oriented hardware and styling rather than maximum range. It combines AWD with all-terrain tires, a modest lift, terrain modes and front tow hooks; Hyundai’s EPA estimate is 259 miles. That is lower than the 290-mile estimate for SE and SEL AWD, so shoppers choosing the XRT are trading some rated range for its distinct equipment. The published figures are not a measure of off-road capability in every condition.

What does independent comparison testing show?
In a May 14, 2025 comparison of the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and 2026 Tesla Model Y, The Associated Press reported Edmunds’ test result for an IONIQ 5 Limited AWD: 282 miles driven against that trim’s 269-mile EPA estimate. That is one test result, not a promise of real-world range for other drivers or trims. The AP report says Edmunds found the IONIQ 5’s controls easier to use and notes standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; it describes the Model Y as offering more cargo capacity. Edmunds called the comparison a draw, with the choice depending in part on preference for the IONIQ 5’s more traditional controls or Tesla’s minimalist interface and technology approach. Which 2025 IONIQ 5 should you consider?
- Choose a long-range RWD version if range is the priority. Hyundai lists up to 318 EPA-estimated miles for long-range SE, SEL and Limited RWD versions.
- Compare AWD trims against your needs. SE and SEL AWD are listed at 290 miles; Limited AWD at 269 miles. The XRT AWD is listed at 259 miles and adds its adventure-oriented equipment.
- Check the route, not just the connector. Confirm compatible charging stations, their generation and charging-start requirements for the NACS network you intend to use.
- Decide how you want to use the cabin. The AP’s account of Edmunds’ comparison points to the IONIQ 5’s more conventional controls and wireless smartphone integration, while the Model Y offers more cargo capacity and a more minimalist interface.
- Get a current, local price. Hyundai’s November 2024 announcement listed launch-era U.S. prices, but those are not current dealer quotes. Availability, incentives and eligibility can change; compare written offers for your location and purchase date.
